Himal Gusain perfect at Locarno Open 2025

India's highest rated IM - Himal Gusain scored a perfect 5/5 to win Locarno Open 2025. He finished a full point ahead of the rest. Jakub Bednarczuk (GER) scored sole 4/5 to secure second place. Alessandro Camagna (ITA) edged past three more players including the organizer, Claudio Boschetti (SUI) on tie-breaks to finish third scoring 3.5/5. The total prize fund was CHF 2150. The top three prizes were CHF 500, 300 and 200 along with a trophy each. The three-day five round rating tournament was  organized by Claudio Boschetti - Swiss CHess Tour at H4 Hotel Arcadia in Locarno, Switzerland from 25th to 27th April 2025. GM Visakh N R drew with GM Aleksandar Indjic (SRB) in Round 3 to maintain his lead at 8th Sharjah Masters 2025. GM Visakh N R is the only Indian at 2/2. GM Pranav Anand went wrong in the double rook and knight endgame against GM Anish Giri (NED). Anish also moved to 2.5/3. GM Aditya Mittal seized his opportunity against GM Gabriel Sargissian (ARM). GM Bharath Subramaniyam H saved a half point in a tough queen vs double rook endgame against GM Samuel Sevian (USA). IM S Rohith Krishna outplayed GM Sethuraman S P. Arun Kataria convincingly clinches 2nd Jaipur Rating Open 2025

Top seed, FM Arun Kataria scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win 2nd Jaipur Rating Open 2025. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Five players - IM Rahul Sangma, Shrayan Majumder, Manav Kumar, Deepak Batra and Sree Veeramani P scored 7.5/9 each. They secured second to sixth place respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund was ₹1150000. The top three prizes were ₹100000, ₹75000 and ₹50000 along with a trophy each. The five-day nine round Rating Open tournament was organized by Royal Chess Club and Services at Jaipur Club in Jaipur, Rajasthan from 23rd to 27th April 2025. 8th Sharjah Masters R2: Visakh N R wins two in-a-row

The reigning National champion, GM Karthik Venkataraman played a solid draw against GM Anish Giri (NED) in Round 2 of 8th Sharjah Masters 2025. GM Visakh N R is the only Indian at 2/2. He defeated the current National Rapid champion, GM Iniyan Pa. Apart from Visakh, GM Changren Dai (CHN) and GM Aleksandar Indjic (SRB) are the only two players who have won both of their respective games. GM Aditya Mittal held the top seed, GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB). Although, Aditya could have pushed for a maximum but instead he decided to repeat moves and split the point. GM Sethuraman S P had a great opportunity to beat the top seed, GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov in the first round of 8th Sharjah Masters 2025. However, Sethuraman missed his opportunity and allowed the World Rapid 2021 champion to escape with a draw. GM Aditya Mittal held GM Parham Maghsoodloo (IRI) to a solid draw. The total prize fund combining three categories is more than US$ 73000, for Masters A (>2500) it is US$ 58600. The top three prizes are US$ 15000, $10000 and $7000 each. Rook and Roll - A Simul with GM Iniyan Pa

On Saturday 19th April 2025, the Bangalore Chess Club (BCC) organized the 3rd edition of Rook and Roll - a simultaneous chess event at Garuda Mall. The event was preceded by a blitz tournament where over 80 people participated. The top five players qualified for the simul event and ten other players selected through a lucky draw completed the field of 15 players. Players were rated as high as 1800 on the FIDE rating list and 2100 on lichess, and as low as 580 on chess.com, showing the diversity in the field. R Praggnanandhaa wins Superbet Chess Classic 2025 in Playoffs

R Praggnanandhaa defeated Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA) in the Playoffs to win Grand Chess Tour Superbet Chess Classic 2025. In the ninth round, Praggnanandhaa drew his game against Levon Aronian (USA). World Champion, D Gukesh shared the point with Fabiano Caruana (USA) and the latter was out of championship contention. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA) and Alireza Firouzja (FRA) defeated Jan-Krzysztof Duda (POL) and Bogdan-Daniel Deac (ROU) respectively. Praggnanandhaa, MVL and Firouzja ended up scoring 5.5/9 each. Praggnanandhaa drew with Firouzja and defeated MVL to win his first GCT event of his career. This is also his second tournament triumph of the year after he won 87th Tata Steel Masters three months ago. Praggnanandhaa won US$ 77667 and currently has 18 GCT points in this season. Bhavan's Gangabux Kanoria Vidyamandir scored an unbeaten 16/18 to win 17th Chessmate - Inter School Rapid Rating Team Tournament 2025. They successfully defended their crown by winning it for the second consecutive year. They finished a full point ahead of the runner-up, South Point High School A 15/18. South Point High School B and Delhi Public School Ruby Park also scored 13/16 each. They secured third and fourth place respectively according to tie-breaks in the Open section. Bardiya Daneshvar wins Gold at Asian Individual 2025, Nihal Sarin Silver

GM Nihal Sarin defeated GM Bardiya Daneshvar (IRI) convincingly in the final round of Asian Individual 2025 Men. Bardiya still became champion due to better tie-break score. Nihal secured a Silver medal and became the only player to beat the eventual champion. The defending champion, GM Shamsiddin Vokhidov (UZB) scored 6.5/9 to win a Bronze medal. In the Women's event, IM Vantika Agrawal defeated WCM Bat-Erdene Mungunzul (MGL) to shatter her Gold medal and WGM title chances. IM Yuxin Song (CHN) won against IM Gulrukhbegim Tokhirjonova (UZB) to clinch the Gold. Bat-Erdene got Silver. IM Batkhuyag Munguntuul (MGL) lost to WGM Xeniya Balabayeva (KAZ) and the latter won Bronze. Vantika finished fourth. Anna Muzychuk wins Grosslobming GP

GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR) drew with GM R Vaishali to win FIDE Grosslobming GP in Austria. GM Alexandra Kosteniuk (UKR) missed a win against GM Jiner Zhu (CHN) in the endgame and the game ended in a draw. Thus, Jiner finished second and won the FIDE Women's GP 2024-25 with 352.5 points. GM Aleksandra Goryachkina secured second place scoring 308.34 point. Anna missed a spot in the Women's Candidates by a whisker 1.67 points as she scored 306.67. There are still many paths left for her as well as others to qualify. GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN) scored 5.5/9 to finish third overall. Total prize fund was €80000.
