National Challengers 04-09: Ravi Teja leads with 7.5/09

The National Challengers Championship 2016 opened at the Amity University in Noida, Delhi, as a non-rated event, for the first time in its 54-year-history. The tournament was expected to attract the stronger players into the tournament, now that there is no possibility for them to lose rating. But there was no change in the trend. A handful of the higher seeds is having  a tough time at the 2016 edition of the Challengers. The tournament has been full of surprise results. IM Ravi Teja leads the tourney with 7.5/11. An illustrated report.

Chengdu GP: Harika wins the Grand Prix, Humpy second

The Chengdu Grand Prix was hosted by China from 1-14th July 2016. Harika and Humpy left the remaining field a whole point behind, both of them scoring 7.0/11. While Harika hit and ducked to perfection, winning three and not losing a single round, Humpy lost two but won five games. The tie-break favoured Harika and she took first place while Humpy settled for the second spot. An illustrated report with interview.

Danzhou Rds 4-6: Super Solid Hari

At the end of six rounds in the seventh Hainan Danzhou super tournament Harikrishna is on 50% score with 3.0/6 and in the fifth position. After his win against Ding Liren in the third round, the Indian player has shown some very solid chess and drew next three rounds against Yu Yangyi, Wang Yue and Peter Leko. Ian Nepomniachtchi is the leader with 4.5/6 as we go into the rest day. We have some pictures for you and game analysis to learn from.

Barberà 06-09: Karthikeyan Murali joint first!

A total of 97 players are participating in the XXXIX Open Internacional de Barberà del Vallès "A" tournament and 31 of them are Indians! The Indian challenge was led by GM Shyam Sundar M. and GM Murali Karthikeyan, followed by an array of international masters and under-rated Indians. In the end, after nine rounds of play, GM Murali Karthikeyan tied for the first place with Chilean IM Cristobal Henriquez and was second on the tiebreak. And Tamil Nadu youngster P. Iniyan scored his maiden International Master norm. A briefly illustrated report.

Chengdu GP 07+08: Harika beats Humpy, recaptures pole position

The Chengdu Grand Prix is being hosted by China from 1-15th July 2016. In a range of stars, two Indians are in the fray, and not surprisingly, both of them have always been there for the nation in the Grand Prix cycle for quite some years now. Harika was pitted against Humpy in the seventh round and we witnessed a full-blown battle that Harika won with good play. Harika has retaken the lead and is on 5.5/8, while Humpy follows closely on 5.0/8. An illustrated report.

Harikrishna beats Ding Liren in Danzhou

Ding Liren is China's strongest grandmaster till date. In fact his preparation is so fierce that Magnus Carlsen himself invited the Chinese to a training camp to work with him. But in the third round of the Hainan Danzhou super tournament India's Harikrishna Pentala showed no such fear or respect for his opponent and boldly went into the highly theoretical line of the Open Ruy Lopez! The game was balanced on knife's edge and any mistake would have been fatal. Ding Liren was the first one to err and Harikrishna chalked up another victory over a World top ten player. Women's Challengers: Viji does it, yet again!

For the past few years, National Women Challengers Chess Championship is attracting a lot of IMs, WGMs, and WIMs, competing for the eight slots available in National Women Premier championship. Premier championship is the prime event, leading to the selection of Indian team for Olympiad and other international events. The 2016 edition was won by IM S. Vijayalakshmi, while Michelle Catherina took the second place. Swati Ghate rallied well in the second half but missed out the third spot to M. Mahalakshmi. An illustrated report.

Harika had begun with two consecutive victories putting her in the lead with 2.0/2. Humpy, who was at the second spot, then one-upped Harika by winning three consecutive games.
