The fantastically organized Rilton Cup came to an end in Hotel Clarion, Stockholm, Sweden. The tournament was practically decided by the all-India penultimate round clash between grandmasters Krishnan Sasikiran and Swapnil Dhopade. Sasikiran took the point and a final round draw meant that he won the tournament. We have an illustrated report.

National Schools is taking place from the 5th to the 7th of January 2017 in Nagpur. We made our way to the venue and witnessed some extra-ordinary scenes. 800 students had gathered to enjoy chess. At the same time the organizers put in all their efforts to ensure that participants and parents get all that they need at one place. Magnus Carlsen and Sergey Karjakin were locked in an epic race at the World Blitz Championship 2016. None of them was ready to let the other escape with the lead. While it was Magnus who lead the event for most of the duration, it was Karjakin who won the all important last round against Jobava and became the World Blitz Champion. Carlsen had to settle for the silver while Dubov won the bronze. In women's section it was Anna Muzychuk who scored a double by winning the gold in both the events. GM Sriram Jha won the 4th Bhopal Open 2016 held from the 20th-25th of December 2016. He scored 8.5/10 and emerged ahead of Srinath Rao thanks to a better tiebreak. His last round win against Anup Deshmukh was a perfect demonstration of what Sriram is so good at. Simple, purposeful and logical play.
