ChessBase India Live coaching - Amruta Mokal continues her series on the Sicilian Kan

"My aim is to offer a black repertoire for players all over the world against 1.e4," says Amruta Mokal. All her life she has played the Sicilian Kan and gathered some great experience in the line. She has employed it against some strong grandmasters and has many intricacies to share. The first part, which was an introduction to the opening, was a big success as more than 100 people tuned in at the same time on Youtube to learn this sharp opening. The second lecture in the series will be held on 7th of April at 6 p.m. IST. Amruta will cover the 5.Bd3 lines. Grenke Chess Classic: Carlsen finds a narrow escape

Round 5 of the Grenke Chess Classic found world champion Magnus Carlsen on tightropes against German GM Georg Meier. Had it not been for the time trouble, Carlsen's downfall was certain. But as they say, "there are no heroes under time trouble". Meier failed to find the finishing blow just one move before the first time control and the game fizzled out into a draw just four moves later. Anand's game against Caruana also created some early rippled but the ensuing mass exchanges only led to the players shaking hands to sign peace. Arkadij Naiditsch was another player to blow the bugle and launch an all-out attack from the word 'go' in his game against Matthias Bluebaum. Naiditsch came very close to victory in the game but some extremely resourceful defence saved Bluebaum half a point. We have a report with game analysis by WIM Angela Franko Valencia.

GM Miroshnichenko, or Miro, as he likes to be called, is currently in India training few of our country's most talented youngsters from the 1st to the 10th of April 2018. But after those ten days of training the Ukrainian grandmaster has kept two days - 11th and 12th of April to travel to any place in India which would be interested to have him and do a two-day camp. Miro's current Elo is 2606, but at one point he had a live rating of 2700+ and has drawn against Vishy Anand as well. Having a two-day camp with him is sure to help boost the chess level in your town/ academy!

The Dubai Open 2018 holds tremendous interest for Indian fans. Apart from the fact that we have three leaders on 3.0/3, we also have 73 participants out of 164 players! Truly mind boggling! Grenke Chess Classic R4: Caruana pulls off à la Carlsen!

All games looked like they were steered towards a draw in the fourth round of the Grenke Chess Classic. But just then, Fabiano Caruana's pieces began asserting their dominance over the board. It still didn't look like it could be enough but the Italian-American  GM pulled off à la Carlsen, drawing blood out of stone! Meanwhile, Vishy Anand played tournament co-leader Nikita Vitiugov and was held to a draw. We have a report with pictures and games.

The Asian Youth Championship 2018 is currently in progress in Chiang Mai, Thailand. A record breaking number of Indian players, 90 in total, have made their way to conquer the Asian titles. The event began with the rapid section where India won ten medals - gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze. The most encouraging part is that girl power is emerging in a big-way in Indian chess - Sahithi Varshini, Savitha Shree, Divya Deshmukh, Rakshitta Ravi, Saina Salonika, Mrudul Dehankar, Arpita Mukherjee, Aakanksha Hagawane and more. Not to forget that in the boys we have some big stars - IM D. Gukesh being one of them.  

Grenke Chess Classic R3: MVL joins Vitiugov in the lead

Round three of the Grenke Chess Classic was the last round to be played in the current tournament venue in Karlsruhe. But before the tournament moved to its new venue in Baden Baden, there was an important change at the top of the leaderboard: Maxime Vachier-Lagrave joined Nikita Vitiugov as the tournament leader by beating Hou Yifan. Vitiugov in the meantime was held to a draw by Naiditsch. In another exciting game, Fabiano Caruana annihilated Georg Meier's king with a monstrous kingside attack. Magnus Carlsen also tried hard to win but Matthias Bluebaum defended stubbornly and allowed the world champion no chance. An illustrated report.

State tournaments in India are conducted usually because they are mandatory, and to select the qualifiers for the Nationals. No one ever thought of doing it in a tasteful manner. That was until Akshayakalpa, an agriculture based company in Karnataka decided that their state players deserved something better. This year the Karnataka State Championships will be held from the 14th-18th of April 2018. The prize fund is a mammoth Rs.10,00,000 - equivalent to National Premier 2017! Grenke Chess Classic R2: Anand loses to MVL; Vitiugov keeps his lead

Round two of the Grenke Chess Classic brought a shocking loss for India's Viswanathan Anand. Playing against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Anand tried to catch the Frenchman off guard by opting for the Taimanov variation of the Sicilian instead of his usual Najdorf. But soon the boot was on the wrong foot as MVL turned out to be well prepared in this line too. Meanwhile, yesterday's surprise leader continued to surprise as he maintained his half point lead over the field winning his second round game against Georg Meier. In the other games, Carlsen and Aronian outplayed Hou Yifan and Arkadij Naiditsch respectively while Fabiano Caruana was held to a draw by Matthias Bluebaum. Round 2 report.  

Hrithik in 'Thej' - It was an April Fool's Day Joke!

On 1st of April we published an article about Hrithik Roshan starring in Thej - a biopic on the life of India's 50th GM M.S. Thejkumar. There was a lot of excitement in the Indian chess circles with the news floating all across social media. We have to say Thej's life story is perfect for a Bollywood movie. However, for now it was just an April Fool's Day Prank, a long standing tradition of ChessBase! In this article we tell you about the reactions from the chess community as well as Thejkumar and show you two examples where it was Thejkumar who played a trick on others! 

Grenke Chess Classic R1: Carlsen faces his challenger in the inaugural round!

Lots for the first round brought about a very welcome matchup for the spectators at the Grenke Chess Classic as world champion Magnus Carlsen was pitted against his challenger-to-be, Fabiano Caruana. Carlsen had the black pieces and came quite close to victory but Caruana found his way to hold ground. In another exciting game of the round, Arkadij Naiditsch had MVL on tightropes in a London System. Vishy Anand also came up with a tricky exchange sacrifice against Hou Yifan but had to settle for a draw in the end. In the only decisive game of the round, Nikita Vitiugov found a brilliant combination to finish off Matthias Bluebaum in merely 25 moves. Round 1 report.
