The National Team Championships 2020 will begin from the 7th of February 2020in Ahmedabad, Gujarat with some of the best chess players in Indian chess taking part. In the open section team PSPB is the big favourite with Adhiban, Karthikeyan, Abhijeet Gupta, Deep Sengupta and Lalith Babu. The Railways A & B teams, Air India and AAI will be the big competitors for PSPB. Things are much more exciting in the women's section as PSPB and Air India will indulge in a full blooded fight. PSPB team has in its ranks Soumya Swaminathan, Padmini Rout, Mary Ann Gomes, Rakshitta Ravi and Nisha Mohota. Air India has an equally strong team with Tania Sachdev, Bhakti Kulkarni, Vijayalakshmi, Meenakshi and Aarthie Ramaswamy. A curtain raiser.

Aravindh wins Karaikudi Grand Prix Rapid Rating Open

Reigning National Triple Crown champion and top seed of the tournament GM Aravindh Chithambaram scored 6.5/7 to win All India Chess Grand Prix Rapid Rating Open 2020 at Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu. Double IM-norm holder FM Pranesh M also finished with the same score, however due to a better tie-break score, Aravindh clinched the championship and Pranesh had to be content with the runner-up position. Six players finished at 6.0/7, IM Al Muthaiah secured the third position according to the tie-breaks. Total 190 players including two GMs and three IMs participated in this fourth leg of the Grand Prix. Currently Pranesh is leading the table, followed by IMs Saravana Krishnan and Ra Harikrishnan. Life lessons from India's 39th GM - Ashwin Jayaram

The people who struggle to reach their destination often have the best stories to tell. Meet India's 39th GM Ashwin Jayaram. Born in 1990, Ashwin quickly became one of the best junior players in Indian chess, winning the Asian Juniors twice, reaching an Elo of 2480 and scoring three GM norms. By 2007, it seemed only a matter of time before he would become a GM - at least that's what everyone thought. 8 years! That's the period Ashwin had to wait to get his last 20 Elo points. In the year 2015, Ashwin Jayaram became India's 39th GM. This is a story of hard work, how to fight tough situations, how to ride the ebbs and flows of life and more importantly how to never give up! This is the story of Ashwin Jayaram's life. 

Fischer Chess Club organizes Street Chess League in Jalandhar, Punjab

Fischer Chess Club took a unique initiative on Sunday 2nd February 2020 by organizing a Street Chess League in front of AM PM Khao Pio Jio restaurant. To promote the game in the Jalandhar, Punjab region, Fischer Chess Club decided to make this novelty to garner attention of the common masses. The event was conducted at one of the most visited markets in Jalandhar. The region's top players FM Dushyant Sharma and FM Ashwani Tiwari battled against each other much to the live attendance crowd's delight. Abhirami Madabushi wins Telangana Smart Girl FIDE Rated Open 2020

Top seed of the tournament 16-year old Abhirami Madabushi of Telangana scored 8.0/9, remained undefeated and finished a half point ahead of the field to clinch Smart Girl FIDE Rated Open Telangana 2020. Nanditha V of Telangana scored 7.5/9 to finish at second position, Bhilva Nilaya K E K of Andhra Pradesh secured third position bettering the tie-break score of five other players who also finished with the same score. The tournament had a total prize fund of ₹25000. It was organized by Telangana State Chess Association from 25th to 29th January 2020 at Hyderabad, Telangana. Vatsal Singhania wins Marienbad Open 2020 IM Round-Robin

Former Commonwealth Gold medalist and Asian Youth Silver medalist, FM Vatsal Singhania scored 7.0/9, remained undefeated to win Marienbad Open 2020 IM Round-Robin. He performed at 2474, increased 112 Elo rating points to score his maiden IM-norm after missing it out earlier in 5th IIFLW Open 2019-20. Among other Indians, Laxman finished shared first in Open event and he also finished second in the Blitz event. He missed the championship in Blitz by a whisker as he needed a draw in the final round to clinch the championship. India has a new no.2 - Vidit Gujrathi

Pentala Harikrishna became India no.2 in October 2012. Until that point it was K. Sasikiran who was the next best player in India after Anand. It was a close battle between Hari and Sasi for nearly two years. But after 2014, Harikrishna's upward trend began, reaching as high as 2770 in December 2016. Now after seven years and four months, we have a new India no.2 and that is Vidit Gujrathi. Although Vidit had previously surpassed Hari in terms of live rating, this is the first time that the Nashik lad has become India no.2 on a published rating list. As on 1st of February 2020, Vidit with a rating of 2721, is eight Elo points ahead of Harikrishna who is on 2713. Vishy Anand still maintains the India no.1 spot with an Elo of 2755.

Advaith and Siddhi win Karnataka State under-9 Open and Girls 2020

Advaith Prabhuraj and reigning National under-7 girls champion Siddhi Rao win the Karnataka State under-9 in Open and Girls section respectively. This was Advaith's first State title. He scored an unbeaten 8.0/9 and finished a half point ahead of the field. Both Among Bisht and Sathvik Adiga scored 7.5/9, they were placed second and third respectively as per their tie-break scores. Siddhi bounced back after suffering a loss in round 4 and scored 7.0/8 to win the tournament. Rudra Rajeev and Lakshmi Sahasra secured second and third position with a score of 6.5/8 and 6.0/8 respectively. David Paravyan wins Gibraltar Masters 2020

The ten rounds of Gibraltar Masters came to a conclusion yesterday with as many as seven players finishing tied for the first place. Based on the first tie-break the top four players indulged in a play-off that finally decided the champion of the event. David Paravyan, a young Russian player who scored an unbeaten 7.5/10, beat Andrey Esipenko and Wang Hao in the play-off comprising 10 minutes plus 10 seconds rapid games to emerge as the ultimate winner and bag the cash prize of £30,000 (about 28 Lakh INR). In this illustrated report we bring you the games, photos, and videos from the last day of the festival.
