Tarun Kanyamarala wins Limerick Open 2019

Indian origin 15-year-old FM Tarun Kanyamarala scored 5.5/6, remained undefeated to win Limerick Open 2019. He finished a half point ahead of the runner-up FM Gabriel Voiteanu and FM Henry Li, both scored an unbeaten 5.0/6 each to secure second and third position respectively. In the under-1400 section Atharva Paibir scored an unbeaten 5.5/6 to win it. He finished a half point ahead of the runner-up Akshay Ranade. Dylan Murphy scored 4.5/6 to be placed third. The tournament was organized by John Cassidy from 26th to 28th October at South Court Hotel, Limerick in Ireland. Arushi showcases her 'Never give up' mindset

Arushi Kotwal showcased her fighting spirit as she completely turned things around from a loss position to a win. Rutumbara Bidhar missed a few opportunities and eventually held top seed in the girls section, Priyanka Nutakki to a draw. Koustav had a narrow escape against the reigning National Amateur champion Kartavya Anadkat. Delhi's own Arjun Gupta held Rajdeep to a draw and Saina Salonika lost to Vyshnavi Chinnam in round 3 of 49th National Junior open and 34th National Junior girls respectively. Vishy Anand to join forces with Microsense to create future champions in India

One of the companies that is supporting Indian chess in a big way is Microsense Networks. Based in Chennai, the co-founder and Managing Director of the company S. Kailasanathan is a chess lover and a former state champion of Tamil Nadu. The company supports over 20 chess talents of India and sponsored the Kramnik Microsense India chess program that took place recently in Geneva. On 31st of October, they held a felicitation ceremony where three of the youngsters of Indian chess - Raunak Sadhwani, Prithu Gupta and P. Iniyan were awarded with Rs. 1 lakh each and feted by none other than five-time World Champion Vishy Anand. At the event Kailasanathan and Vishy Anand made a very important announcement. What was it? It was not Sandipan's day

Sandipan suffered his first loss of the tournament against Ukraine's strong GM Pavel Eljanov in round 7. In round 6, Sandipan held former World Cup winner legendary Gata Kamsky to a draw. After suffering a loss in round 5, making a short a draw in round 6, Sethuraman squashed his opponent of round 7 in just 11 moves. Padmini suffered her first loss in round 7 after scoring an emphatic victory in round 5 and a topsy-turvy draw in round 6. Gukesh scored three consecutive clinical victories and is now set to face Gata Kamsky in the penultimate round of the tournament. There is a five-way lead at the top with 6.0/7 between Pavel Eljanov, Anton Demchenko, Timur Gareyev, Sergei Azarov and Vitaliy Bernadskiy at 23rd OIBM Tegernsee in Germany. Top seeds make a smooth start at National Juniors 2019

49th National Junior open and 34th National Junior girls started smoothly for all top seeds in round 1 at Suncity World School in Gurgaon, Haryana. Exactly a week ago World Junior concluded at the nation's capital New Delhi. Total 172 in open and 115 in girls section are taking part from various states across the country. Three out of the top four seeds in the open section are from Kolkata representing West Bengal. Since the defending champion champion in the open section, GM Karthik Venkataraman has exceeded the age limit, a new champion is guaranteed to be crowned, whereas WIM Sakshi Chitlange is looking forward to defend her National Junior title in her final attempt at the tournament. A great friendship match between players of Indonesia and India comes to an end

The rapid and blitz match between players of India and Indonesia came to an end with the team ChessBase India winning the event with a score of 155.5 versus Indonesia's 144.5. The hosts had a 10-point lead after the rapid section and the score stood at 105-95. In the blitz event things were extremely close and India managed to edge out their rivals with a score of 50.5-49.5. This resulted in an overall victory of 155.5-144.5. The event proved to be a great learning experience for both sides. Apart from chess, it also created an atmosphere of friendship and camaraderie between two countries. The event was jointly organized by Percasi (Indonesian Chess Association), ChessBase India and Chess Gurukul. We thank each one involved in this endeavour for making it a big success.

Team India at the World Youth Under-16 Chess Olympiad

The World Youth Under-16 Chess Olympiad has begun in Corum, Turkey. Consisting of five players, the Indian contingent got off to a good start with clean 4-0 sweeps in the first two rounds of the event but the third and fourth rounds didn't go as desired as the team lost 1.5-2.5 and 0.5-3.5 to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan respectively. After four rounds, India has secured 10 points in all and 4 match points. Belarus is the sole leader with perfect 8.0/8 match points; while four countries, including the top-seeded Azerbaijan, follow them closely with 7 points each. Manuel triumphs in 5th Pampilhosa da Serra and Portuguese Super Cup

GM Manuel Perez Candelário scored an unbeaten 8.0/9 to win 5th Pampilhosa da Serra International Open which is the most important Rapid tournament in Portugal. GM Jaime Latasa Santos also finished with the same score, however due to lower tie-break score, he was declared the runner-up. GM Karen Grigoryan scored 7.5/9 to finish at third position. 114 players participated from 11 different countries including 10 GMs in this one-day open rapid tournament held on 19th October 2019 at Villa Pampilhosa Hotel in Portugal. On Sunday 20th October, Portuguese Super Cup was held at the Municipal Market in the middle of a Vintage Car exhibition. The month of November 2019 is absolutely stacked. It starts with National Junior on the very first day of the month. FIDE Grand Prix makes a return on 5th at Hamburg, Germany. Grand Chess Tour has two events this month - the first one being at Bucharest, Romania from 6th and the second one takes place in Kolkata, India from 22nd where the reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsen also returns to India, first time in six years. since winning the World Championship in Chennai 2013. That's not all, there is World Senior, National under-11, National Schools, 1st FIDE World Disabled Cadet and Youth championship and many more State, State level, National level Classic, Rapid and Blitz rating tournaments. Total 110 tournaments are listed in November 2019.

A ten-point lead for the hosts as we head to Blitz!

Four rounds of rapid chess each were held on 29th and 30th of October 2019 between the ChessBase India team and Indonesia. After the first two rounds, we mentioned in our day one report that Indonesia had built up a commanding lead with 24-16. However, the Indians fought back and at the end of day two, and six rounds the lead had narrowed down to just two points - ChessBase India-59 and Indonesia-61. On day three, the Indian players managed to play some good chess and the rapid portion of the match has ended with a score of 105-95. A ten point lead for the hosts. But the match isn't over yet. We now move into the blitz section that will be played today (31st of October). There are 100 points at stake. Can the Indonesian team make a comeback? 

Karpov Trophy 2019: Nihal Sarin's emphatic victory against Sara Khadem

Amin Bassem and Alexey Sarana both lost one game each in rounds twelve and thirteen of the ongoing Anatoly Karpov Trophy 2019 to slip down the leaderboard. Nihal Sarin, on the other hand, kept up his steady form and emerged as the sole second with 8.5/13 points. In the twelfth round Nihal registered a crushing victory against the Iranian player Sara Khadem with white pieces and drew his next encounter confidently against Alexey Sarana playing black. Overall, Etienne Bacrot is still leading the field with 9.0/13 points and it remains to be seen if the Indian phenom can catch up with him in the last remaining round before the knockout semi-finals of the event begin. Sandipan and Gukesh make a steady start at 23rd OIBM Tegernsee

Witnessing the participation of over 500 players in Indian tournaments is a common happening, however Offene Internationale Bayerische Meisterschaft also known as OIBM at Tegernsee in Germany is witnessing a mammoth 504 participants in the 23rd edition of the tournament. Sandipan Chanda and Gukesh D are just a half point behind the four leaders at 3.5/4 each. The highest rated Indian at the tournament Sethuraman suffered a defeat in round 4. 12-year-old CM Prraneeth Vuppala had a dream start by holding the former World Cup winner Gata Kamsky to a draw in the first round.
