FIDE Chess.com Grand Swiss tournaments to be held in Riga

FIDE chess.com Grand Swiss and Women's Grand Swiss will take place in Riga, Latvia from 25th October to 8th November 2021. Both events are part of 2021-23 World Championship Cycle and it will be 11-round Swiss League event. For the Open section, the winner and the runner-up will earn their place in the Candidates 2022, while in the Women's section only the winner will earn her spot in the Women's Candidates 2022. A total of 114 players in the Open and 50 in the Women's will take part. The list of qualified players were announced by FIDE including the reserves list. RTU Open 2021 R1: Salna stuns Sethuraman

They say even a world-class batsman is the most vulnerable when he faces the first ball, the same analogy can be applied to a goalkeeper who concedes a goal in the initial minutes or to a strong chess player who loses his first round game. Sethuraman lost his first round game against Aleksandras Salna (LTU). Nihal, Aravindh, Narayanan, Arjun Erigaisi and Abhimanyu Puranik made a winning start among the top Indian players. A total of 175 players including 27 Indians are taking part from 29 nations across the world in this nine-round Swiss league event which has a total prize fund of €17100 (approx. ₹14.92 lacs) with the first prize being €2500 (approx. ₹2.18 lacs). Vaishali is 10th Indian woman to become an International Master

On 4th of August 2021, 20-year-old Vaishali scored her final norm at the Biel Masters Open 2021 and became the 10th female player of India to achieve the IM title. While growing up, Vaishali was one of the biggest talents in Indian chess winning two World Youth Gold medals. She has shaped up brilliantly and now at the age of 20, she has cemented herself as India no.3 behind Humpy and Harika. Abhimanyu Puranik wins Riga Technical University 2021 Rapid Open

Abhimanyu Puranik won the Riga Technical University 2021 Rapid Open in a spectacular fashion. His no-draw approach worked out in his favor. He beat compatriot Narayanan in a must-win situation since he was a half point behind the sole leader. Puranik won €360 (approx. ₹31424). Indian players claimed five out of top ten places in the Rapid. Karthikeyan Murali scored 8.5/11 to finish third in the Opening Blitz event. Wesley So wins Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Chessable Masters

Liem Quang Le made a good start by swindling So in the first game of the second set of Finals at Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Chessable Masters. However, the momentum did not last long, he barely managed to make a draw in the second game, lost the third one and drew the fourth game to tie the set. It was not enough to force tie-breaks. Thus, So won his third event of the season. Aronian missed a win in the first game and lost the next two. He faltered in the endgame of all three. Artemiev was placed third and Aronian fourth. Vantika Agrawal wins AICF National Senior Women Online 2021

WIM Vantika Agrawal of Delhi scored 9.5/11, to win the AICF National Senior Women Online 2021 championship. This is her maiden National title. She won ₹50000 cash prize. WIM Arpita Mukherjee of West Bengal scored 9.0/11, and she secured second position. She earned ₹40000. Three players finished at 8.5/11. According to the Playoffs, WGM Srija Seshadri of Tamil Nadu was placed third, and she got ₹35000. Total prize fund for the event was ₹250000 for the top 10 places. Liem Quang Le seemed to have lost all his momentum on the first day of the Finals at Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Chessable Masters. He was unable to move the scorecard beyond a draw, which has not happened throughout the event. Maybe he was tired after beating Aronian in a grueling match on the previous day. Liem lost the first set 2.5-0.5 which means he has to win the second set to force tie-breaks. Meanwhile, the first set for the 3rd-4th place match between Aronian and Artemiev ended in a 2-2 draw. Mitrabha Guha dominates AICF National Senior Online Open 2021

IM Mitrabha Guha of West Bengal scored an unbeaten 10.0/11, to win his third National title and first Senior championship. He drew with GM Vaibhav Suri in the final round to become AICF National Senior Online 2021 champion. He won ₹50000 cash prize. Vaibhav Suri of Delhi 9.0/11 secured second position. He earned ₹40000. Six players finished at 8.5/11. According to the Playoffs, GM Abhijeet Gupta was placed third, and he got ₹35000. Total prize fund for the event was ₹250000 for the top 10 places. Chessable Masters SF2: Phenomenal Liem will face So in the Finals

Former world blitz champion and the current Vietnam no.1 Liem Quang Le is playing phenomenal chess at Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Chessable Masters. He beat Aronian in the Armageddon after the Armenian forced tie-breaks by winning the third and fourth rapid games consecutively. Artemiev staged his comeback by starting the day with a victory over So but the American immediately bounced back and levelled the score before making two draws to tie the set and advance to the Finals. Jan-Krzysztof Duda clinches FIDE World Cup 2021

On 5th August 2021, Poland no.1 Jan-Krzysztof Duda created and shattered a lot of records as he won the FIDE World Cup 2021. At the age of 23-years and 18-game unbeaten run, he matched the record with Aronian's triumph in 2005. He became the first Polish chess player to win the World Cup and qualify to the FIDE Candidates. Only four players before Duda had won the World Cup by remaining undefeated throughout the event, they are - Aronian, Kamsky, Svidler and Kramnik. Carlsen defeated Fedoseev in another positional squeeze securing the third position. Duda won US$110000, Karjakin US$80000 and Carlsen will get US$60000 (20% of each is retained by FIDE). The first set of Semifinals at the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Chessable Masters witnessed Liem and So prevailing against their respective opponents. Aronian lost the first set against Liem by 1-3. Although he missed a few things and certainly was not in his best shape as he had shown in the earlier phase of the tournament. Meanwhile, So beat Artemiev by minimum margin 2.5-1.5. Both Aronian and Artemiev must win the second set of the Semifinals to force tie-breaks and keep their chances in the tournament. Carlsen composes a symphony of positional sacrifice

The first game of the FIDE World Cup 2021 Final between Karjakin and Duda was a damp squib - as perfectly described by the British legend Nigel Short during the live commentary. Karjakin's good preparation did not work out as his novelty was surprised by Duda's response and thus a draw was made by repetition. The only other game of the day between Fedoseev and Carlsen will be one for the ages because of Carlsen's brilliant positional sacrifice. Generally the world champion unleashes his 'Hulk mode' after suffering a loss, however this time, 'The Mozart of Chess' composed a beautiful symphony whose melody reverberated throughout the chess universe, and perhaps it will continue to be for eons. Chessable Masters QF Day 2: Liem storms into Semifinals

Jorden van Foreest was unable to continue his momentum from the previous day in the second set of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Chessable Masters Quarterfinals. So avenged his loss by beating Jorden in consecutive games before making a draw to eliminate him from the tournament. Former World Blitz champion Liem beat Firouzja in both games to advance to the Semifinals for the very first time. Aronian beat Mamedyarov by 2-1 to set up a clash with Liem in the Semis. Artemiev-Nakamura had the most evenly matched duel of the day as their match went to Armageddon, which was won by Artemiev. He will face So in the Semifinals today, which starts at 8:30 p.m. IST.
