44th Chess Olympiad: A recap through the lens of an Indian Chess fan - An experience beyond surreal

A lot has been talked about the first Chess Olympiad to take place in India which concluded just over two months ago, with praise from all quarters of the global chess fraternity. Abundant content on the games, drama, playing hall and so on has been brought to you by various chess reporters, media and streamers. However, how would it have felt to experience the moments in person, at least for the final few days of the mega event and see the Indian teams enter the podium, on top of all the drama and nail-biting finishes? Yours truly makes an attempt to share some of the key highlights from the experience being at ground zero for the last four rounds and the closing ceremony of the Chennai Olympiad. Five Indians will battle Carlsen and the world's best at Aimchess Rapid starting today

The sixth and last Regular event of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour 2022 season is Aimchess Rapid. A total of five Indians will feature in this event. They are - Arjun Erigaisi, Pentala Harikrishna, Vidit Gujrathi, D Gukesh and MPL Indian Chess Tour leg 4 winner, IM Aditya Mittal. The remaining players in the field are - World Champion Magnus Carlsen, World Cup 2021 winner, Jan-Krzysztof Duda, Germany no.1 Vincent Keymer, World no.7 Anish Giri, Romania no.1 Richard Rapport, World no.13 Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Spain no.4 David Anton Guijarro, reigning World Rapid champion Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Sweden no.1 Nils Grandelius, Canada no.2 Eric Hansen and celebrated author and commentator Daniel Naroditsky. World Junior 2022 R2-3: Priyanka Nutakki makes a good start

WGM Priyanka Nutakki made a good start 2.5/3 at World Junior 2022 Girls. She defeated WFM Gulenay Aydin (TUR) in the second round and drew with WGM Maili-Jade Ouellet (CAN) in the third. Although the Canadian had a winning opportunity, she missed the combination and Priyanka managed to escape with a draw. IM Prraneeth Vuppala and IM Manish Anto Cristiano F drew with GM Arseniy Nesterov and GM Iniyan P respectively in the third round. Four Indians are currently at 2/3 in the Open section. Fagernes Autumn GM 2022 R1-5: Vaishali's immortal game against Sethuraman

IM Vaishali perhaps scored her immortal win over GM Sethuraman in the fifth round of Fagernes Autumn GM 2022. Vaishali put both of her knights under attack in a rare self-fork against the former Asian Continental champion. The attack certainly rattled her opponent which induced some decisive mistakes. She is now joined by eight more players in the lead 4/5. GM Abhimanyu Puranik, GM S L Narayanan, Fagernes Open 2022 champion - GM K Sasikiran and GM Praggnanandhaa are the remaining four Indians who are at the pole position, fighting for the top prize. Harshad wins Azure All India Rapid Rating Open 2022

FM S Harshad scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win Azure All India Rapid Rating Open 2022. He finished a half point ahead of the field. FM Harsh Suresh and Gugan G scored 8/9 each. They secured second and third place according to tie-breaks. They all remained undefeated. Fourth place finisher Kanishk S K also remained unbeaten. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹30000, ₹20000 and ₹15000 along with a trophy each. This was Harshad's first-ever Rapid Rating Open tournament triumph. World Junior 2022 R1: Ishvi Aggarwal gives a massive scare to World U18 champion Mariam Mkrtchyan

16-year-old Ishvi Aggarwal is the reigning National Amateur U-2300 Women's champion. She was paired against the newly crowned World Under-18 Girls champion, WIM Mariam Mkrtchyan (ARM). Mariam won the Gold last month with an astonishing 11/11 score. Getting a completely winning position against her was certainly not an easy task. Ishvi managed to do that, yet she was unable to make the most out of her opportunity, allowing her opponent to escape with a draw by perpetual check in the end. The highest rated Indian in the field, GM Leon Luke Mendonca also had a shaky start. He somehow wiggled out of trouble and won his first round game. Today is the sole double round of the tournament. Kaustuv Kundu and Ravi Teja win Vizag Rapid and Blitz Rating Open 2022

Kaustuv Kundu and IM Ravi Teja S scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 and 8/9 each to win Vizag Rapid and Blitz Rating Open 2022 respectively. Both of them finished a half point ahead of the competition. IM Mehar Chinna Reddy C H scored sole 8/9 to secure second place. Ajay Mushini edged past IM Dhulipalla Bala Chandra Prasad on tie-breaks to finish third in Rapid. Four players scored 7.5/9 in the Blitz event. IM Bala and IM CRG Krishna were adjudged second and third respectively. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹700000, ₹500000 for Rapid and ₹200000 for Blitz. Abhimanyu Puranik victorious at Serbia First League 2022 for ZMAJ - Beograd

GM Abhimanyu Puranik scored an important 8/11 to ensure his team ZMAJ - Beograd win the Serbian First League. He was the second-highest scorer of his team after IM Mihajlo Radovanoic 9.5/11. ZMAJ - Beograd scored 26/33, finished four points ahead of the runner-up JELICA PEP - Goračići 22/33. 365.rs POŽEGA - Požega and NOVOSADSKI ŠK - Novi Sad scored 21/33 each. They were placed third and fourth according to tie-breaks. This is Abhimanyu's second team triumph of the year. 12-year-old Rikka Mitsuyama becomes Japan Women's Chess Champion 2022

12-year-old Rikka Mitsuyama scored an impressive 5/6 to become the newest Japan Women's Chess Champion 2022. She remained undefeated and finished a half point ahead of the competition. Melody Takayasu and WCM Azumi Sakai scored 4.5/6 and 4/6 respectively to secure second and third place respectively. Japan Senior Chess Championship 2022 also took place simultaneously, which was won by Takeshi Gishi. He started with five straight wins before splitting the point in the final round to win the tournament 5.5/6. Pranav Venkatesh Golden at World Youth U16 Olympiad 2022, Bronze for Tanisha Boramanikar

India suffered a 1-3 loss to Turkiye-Red in the final round of FIDE World Youth Under-16 Olympiad 2022. Turkiye-Red had already won Gold after the eighth round. They suffered a total of three individual losses in the entire tournament. One of them was in the last round by FM Eray Kilic against GM Pranav Venkatesh. Pranav scored an impressive 8/9 to win an individual Gold medal. He also won the Magnus Academy Challenge on the previous day. It is certainly not easy to balance two tournaments, which has a completely different format and time control. Leon Luke Mendonca wins Gold and Silver for Varos Arad at Romanian Superliga Team 2022

India's 67th GM Leon Luke Mendonca won an individual Gold on Board no.3. He also won a team Silver medal for ACS Sah Club Vados Arad at Superliga - Romanian Team Chess Championship 2022. Leon started the event with a loss. However, he bounced back by scoring 6.5 points in the next eight rounds. Starting out as the second-highest rated team, they managed to maintain their place. Leon was the top scorer of the team along with GM Thai Dai Van Nguyen (CZE) and FM Samuel-Timotei Ghimpu (ROU) who also scored the same 6.5/9. Laxman R R dominates 17th BRDCA Rapid Rating Open 2022

GM Laxman R R scored an unbeaten 9/10 to win 17th BRDCA Rapid Rating Open 2022. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Second seed of the tournament, GM Sankalp Gupta and IM Sammed Jaykumar Shete scored 8.5/10 each. They secured second and third place according to tie-breaks. Sankalp remained undefeated too. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹400000. The top three prizes were ₹51000, ₹30000 and ₹20000 along with a trophy each. Levon Aronian: The Armenian Lion

Levon Aronian is one of the most colorfully dressed Grandmasters in the world, and also someone who has an immense passion for chess. He played for Armenia, and won multiple medals at the Olympiads before he moved to the United States. Aronian has played some brilliant games at the Olympiads against very high-quality opposition. Invincible Pranav Venkatesh wins Magnus Academy Challenge 2022, Bharath Subramaniyam third

GM Pranav Venkatesh scored an unbeaten 38/42 to win Challengers Chess Tour 2022 Magnus Chess Academy Challenge. One must not forget that he is also playing in the World Youth Under-16 Olympiad for India on the same day. Thus, this triumph makes it that much more special. His performance is on par with Esipenko's win in the Julius Baer Challenge last month. Since the total number of players was one less than the previous event, thus the number of rounds also got reduced by one. Perhaps if there were one more round, Pranav could have tied Esipenko's score. IM Ihor Samunenkov (UKR) scored 35/42 to finish second and GM Bharath Subramaniyam H finished third with a score of 28/42. Photo: chess24

Novy Bor Chess Club wins European Club Cup 2022 Open with a perfect score

Pentala Harikrishna scored an important victory in the final round against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave. Novy Bor Chess Club defeated Asnieres Le Grand Echiquier 3.5-2.5 in the final round to win European Chess Club Cup 2022 with a perfect score 14/14. Vidit Gujrathi's fantastic six game winning streak came to an end against Andrey Esipenko. Apart from Harikrishna, David Anton Guijarro scored the only other win for the team to ensure the Czech team win the title for the second time after nine years. Magnus Carlsen won the first prize for his individual performance of 83.3% on Board no.1.
