The 'Dawn of Divya Deshmukh era' starts with a thumping triumph at Tata Steel India 2023 Women Rapid

IM Divya Deshmukh triumphed over all odds to win Tata Steel Chess India 2023 Women Rapid emphatically. Heading into the final day of Rapid, Divya needed only 2/3. She first drew against the 14th Women's World Champion, GM Anna Ushenina (UKR). Then she lost against the World Junior Girls 2019 champion, IM Polina Shuvalova. In the final round, she was up against the World Rapid Women's 2019 champion, GM Koneru Humpy. The India no.1 faltered in the endgame and her opponent found the critical winning continuation. It earned her the biggest triumph of her career. The 17-year-old has already won National Women for two consecutive editions and earlier this year, she won Gold in Asian Continental Women. Just like Arjun Erigaisi's triumph in 2021 edition propelled him to new heights, this victory could very well do the same for Divya. Pradeep Tiwari clinches Chess for Everyone Rating Open 2023 in Andaman & Nicobar Islands

Pradeep Tiwari (DASCB) scored eight straight wins to clinch Chess for Everyone Rating Open 2023 in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. He won the tournament with a round to spare. A last round loss against his unit mate Ajay Kumar Rai, did not deter his championship chances. Four players - WFM Meghna C H (KER), Ajay, Kashthuri Bhai R (A&N) and Himanshu Moudgil (DASCB) scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed second to fifth. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹125000 + 50 trophies. Top three prizes were ₹20000, ₹15000 and ₹12000 along with a trophy each. The tournament was held from 11th to 15th August 2023 at Hotel TSG Grand in Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It was organized by Andaman Nicobar Chess Association. This was Pradeep's third rating tournament triumph of his career. The objective of Chess for Everyone is to attract more players to participate in tournaments, get rating in an event which has low entry fee barrier of only ₹250. Nikolas Theodorou triumphs at Summer Chess Classic 2023, Raunak Sadhwani second

GM Nikolas Theodorou (GRE) scored 6/9 to win Summer Chess Classic 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the field. GM Raunak Sadhwani and GM John M Burke (USA) scored 5.5/9 each. They shared the second place. Raunak's sole loss of the event was against the eventual champion, Theodorou in the third round. The total prize fund combining both events was US$ 36000. The top three prizes in A were $6000, $4000 and $3000. GM Pranav Venkatesh and GM Krishnan Sasikiran were the only two other Indians taking part in this event. Tata Steel India 2023 Women Rapid R4-6: Divya Deshmukh domination continues

IM Divya Deshmukh won all three of her games on the second day of Tata Steel Chess India 2023 Women Rapid. She defeated GM Irina Krush (USA), WGM Savitha Shri B and IM Vantika Agrawal. Krush got crushed in the fourth round, Savitha's position got crippled and Vantika blundered a queen by a skewer in the endgame. Divya is on a four-game winning streak having a 5.5/6 score. She is now a whopping 1.5 points ahead of the competition. Reigning Women's World Champion, GM Wenjun Ju (CHN) is the sole player at 4/6. Divya needs to score 2/3 in the last three games against the defending champion - GM Anna Ushenina (UKR), IM Polina Shuvalova and India no.1 woman - GM Koneru Humpy. Gukesh dethrones Vishy Anand's 37-year-long reign as India no.1 officially, also becomes World no.8

GM D Gukesh is a phenomenal talent. He became India no.1 by winning against GM Misratdin Iskandarov (AZE) in Round 2.2 of FIDE World Cup 2023. The 17-year-old delivered a stellar performance at the important knockout event. The soft-spoken powerhouse got eliminated in the Quarterfinals by the eventual winner, Magnus Carlsen. The world no.1 mentioned that he is extremely strong, he was unlucky to face him on the day when he showed his best. FIDE World Cup 2023 Silver medalist, GM R Praggnanandhaa's rating is now, 2727. It made him India no.3 and World no.19 (active players). India currently has five players in the World Top 30. Pentala Harikrishna is World no.31. Omar Almeida Quintana wins 47th Badalona City Open 2023, Kaustuv Kundu second

GM Omar Almeida Quintana (CUB), IM Kaustuv Kundu, GM Dylan Isidro Berdayes Ason (CUB) and IM Gerard Ayats Llobera (ESP) scored an unbeaten 7/9 each. Omar won 47th Badalona City Open 2023 due to better tie-breaks. Kaustuv, Dylan and Gerard were placed second to fourth respectively. The runner-up, Kaustuv also scored his fourth IM-norm in the process, although he did not need it. The top three prizes were €1000, €700 and €400 along with a trophy each respectively. Subhayan Kundu and Prakhar Bajaj are the remaining two Indians to make a top ten finish. They scored 6.5/9 each to finish be placed fifth and sixth respectively. Prakhar gained 86.58 Elo rating points at this event. He gained a total of 198.64 rating points according to FIDE Rating list September 2023.

Reza Mahdavi dominates 29th Abu Dhabi Chess Festival Juniors U16 2023, Mayank Chakraborty second

Second seeded FM Reza Mahdavi (IRI) scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 29th Abu Dhabi Chess Festival Juniors Under-16 Rating Tournament 2023. Reza finished a half point ahead of the field. Top seed of the tournament, CM Mayank Chakraborty scored 8/9 to finish second. His sole loss was against the eventual champion, Reza in the penultimate round. Three players - CM Islombek Sindarov (UZB), Nihal Swarna and Feliks Tokhyan (ARM) scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed third, fourth and fifth respectively according to tie-breaks. The top three prizes were US$ 1500 + trophy, $1000 and $700 each respectively. Syed Abdul Khader and Ananthnarayan were the only two other Indians to finish among top ten. Tata Steel India 2023 Women Rapid R1-3: Divya and Vantika dazzle!

IM Divya Deshmukh and IM Vantika Agrawal are the early coleaders 2.5/3 after the first day of Tata Steel Chess India 2023 Women Rapid. The reigning Asian Continental Women 2023 champion, Divya made her presence felt from the very first game. She started her campaign with a win against the India no.2 and World no.13 woman, GM Harika Dronavalli. Then she drew against the reigning and four-time Women's World Champion, GM Wenjun Ju (CHN). The teenager finished the day with a victory over 44th Chess Olympiad individual Gold medalist, GM Nino Batsiashvili (GEO). Visakh triumphs at Leça Blitz Open 2023, Vignesh second and Harshit Raja third

GMs Visakh N R, Vignesh N R and Harshit Raja scored 7.5/9 each at Leça Blitz Open 2023. Both Visakh and Vignesh remained undefeated. Visakh drew against Vignesh and defeated Harshit. The top three prizes in Blitz were €300 + trophy, €200 + medal and €100 + medal each respectively. GM Manuel Perez Candelario (ESP), IM Raja Panjwani (CAN), GM Visakh N R and GM Vignir Vatnar Stefansson (ISL) scored 7/9 each in the Classical Rating Open. Iniyan wins 27th Creon Open 2023, Bharath Subramaniyam second

GM Iniyan P and GM Bharath Subramaniyam H scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 each at 27th Creon Open Main (>1600) 2023. Iniyan won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Bharath was placed second. The sixth round battle between them ended in a draw. French IMs Joseph Girel and Floryan Eugene scored 7/9 each. They were adjudged third and fourth. GM Sayantan Das is the only other Indian to make a top ten finish. He scored 6.5/9 to secure fifth place. The top three prizes were €2000 + trophy, €1100 and €750 each respectively. This is Iniyan's second triumph in France this year after he won the 8th Noisiel Open in February this year. Anurag Jaiswal convincingly clinches Chess for Everyone Rating Open 2023 in Jharkhand

Anurag Jaiswal scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win Chess for Everyone Rating Open 2023 in Jharkhand. He finished a full point ahead of the competition. Eight players scored 7/9 each. Out of them, 10-year-old Adhiraj Mitra and Akshat Negi were placed second and third according to tie-breaks. The winner Anurag defeated the eventual runner-up, Adhiraj in the final round to become a clear champion. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹75000 + trophies. Top three prizes were ₹15000 + trophy, ₹10000 and ₹7000. The tournament was held from 5th to 9th August 2023 at St. Xavier’s Welfare Center in Chaibasa, Jharkhand. It was organized by West Singhbhum District Chess Association. This was Anurag's first rating tournament triumph in almost four years. India's strongest tournament - Tata Steel Chess India 2023 starts earlier this year

Tata Steel Chess India is the strongest Rapid and Blitz tournament to take place in India. Usually, it takes place between September and December. However, due to the calendar being packed with a series of tournaments, this time it starts tomorrow, Thursday 31st August. That's not all. The tournament will last for ten days - 31st August to 4th September for Women and 5th to 9th September for Men. Just like last year, both men and women's section will have equal prize fund of US$ 41500. The five-day Rapid and Blitz tournament will feature 22 of the world's best including India's top players. Harikrishnan dominates 20th Pays de Charleroi Classical and Blitz Rating Open 2023, Muthaiah second

IM FT Harikrishnan A Ra scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win 20th Pays de Charleroi Open Group A (>=1900) 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. IM FT Muthaiah Al scored sole 7/9 to secure second place. He also remained undefeated. GM Normunds Miezis (LAT) edged past three other players to finish third 6.5/9. The total prize fund was US$ 6000. The top three prizes were €900 + trophy, €600 and €400 each respectively. In the Blitz event, Harikrishnan scored an astounding 11/11 to win the tournament. He finished a staggering 1.5 points ahead of the field. Muthaiah once again claimed the second position scoring 9.5/11. FM Natan Pirard (BEL) finished third 8/11. The top two prizes in the Blitz were €80 and €55 each respectively.

WR Chess clinches FIDE World Rapid Team 2023 with a round to spare, Freedom second and MGD1 third

WR Chess won FIDE World Rapid Team Championship 2023 when they defeated ASV AlphaEchecs Linz 5-1 in the penultimate round. Before that, Armenia held them to a 3-3 draw in Round 10. In the final round, the eventual winner, WR Chess drew against Berlin Chess Federation 3-3, as the outcome of it would not have changed their final rank. They finished with a score of 22/24. Düsseldorfer Schachklub 1914/25 e.V. lost to Freedom 1.5-4.5 in the final round. Thus, Freedom finish second 20/24. Chess Pensioners lost to MGD1 2-4. MGD1 secured Bronze 18/24. Pentala Harikrishna (Bronze), Vidit Gujrathi (Silver), Raunak Sadhwani (Silver), Pranesh M (Bronze), Harika Dronavalli (Silver) and Peter Anand A (Silver) are the individual medal winners for their respective boards. Azumi Sakai and Hiroshi Manabe are Japan Women and Senior Champions 2023

We are already into the eighth month of 2023, a year that has seemingly just breezed by. Right at the end of July, we saw new champions added to the list, as Japan Women’s Chess Championship and Japan’s Senior Chess Championship came to a close. Both tournaments were conducted over two days - 29th and 30th July at Shinagawa-ku Kumin hall called ‘Curian’. Each followed the six round Swiss-league, 45 minutes + 30 secs from move no.1, Japan National Rated format. The top two finishers of both tournaments would earn an invite to Japan Chess Championship 2024, and the respective “Champion” title will be accorded only to the highest finishing players registered under Japan Federation. The top two boards in each of the tournaments played on DGT boards. The games were broadcast live on Japan Chess Federation’s youtube channel, and one could follow the moves on chess.com and Lichess.
