5th Stepan Avagyan Memorial R1: Arjun Erigaisi starts with a win

Arjun Erigaisi makes a great start at 5th Stepan Avagyan Memorial 2024. He played a nice positional game against Robert Hovhannisyan (ARM). Arjun maneuvered his knight beautifully after his opponent created holes in his dark squares. The knight played a key role in Arjun getting the advantage and converting it into a full point. The only other victor of the round is, Bogdan-Daniel Deac (ROU). The Romania no.2 crushed Volodar Murzin in a 21-move miniature. The total prize fund of the tournament is 7450000 AMD (≈ US$ 18400). World Junior 2024 R8: Divya on a roll, Rakshitta maintains her pursuit

IM Divya Deshmukh got back to winning ways by scoring a full point against Kseniya Norman in Round 8 of FIDE World Junior 2024 Girls. Divya got an advantage out of the opening and she outplayed her opponent after that. WIM Mariam Mkrtchyan (ARM) and WGM Rakshitta Ravi are trailing the sole leader by a half point at 6.5/8 each. Four girls including two Indians - WFM Rindhiya V and WFM Sachi Jain are at 6/8 each. In the Open event, GM Aleksey Grebnev drew against GM Kazybek Nogerbek (KAZ). GM Jose Gabriel Cardoso Cardoso (COL), IM Rudik Makarian and GM Mamikon Gharibyan (ARM) scored a win each to join Kazybek and make it a four-way lead 6.5/8. Round 9 starts today at 3 p.m. IST. 26th Asian Youth Rapid R1-4: Pratitee, Aaradhya and Pooja make a perfect start

Pratitee Bordoloi emerged sole leader with a 100% score 4/4 at 26th Asian Youth Chess Championship 2024 Under-12 Girls. She defeated the top seed of her category - Anastasiya Aleks Barabash in the very first round. Aaradhya Das and Pooja Shree R are in a three-way lead with Alisa Genrietta Yunker with a score 4/4 each in Under-10 Girls category. IM Harsh Suresh and Ajay Santhosh Parvathareddy are in a five-way lead with IM Aldiyar Ansat (KAZ), FM Alexander Khripachenko and FM Eldiar Orozbaev (KGZ) in Under-18 Open. IM Divya Deshmukh drew with WIM Mariam Mkrtchyan (ARM) to maintain her sole lead 6/7. Five players including WGM Rakshitta Ravi are trailing by a half point at 5.5/7 each. In the Open event, GM Kazybek Nogerbek (KAZ) defeated IM L M S T De Silva (SRI) to emerge sole leader 6/7. Eight players are in pursuit at 5.5/7 each. In a battle of former World Under-16 vs Under-14 champions, GM Pranav Anand outplayed IM Ilamparthi A R to stay in the fray 5.5/7. IM Sambit Panda showed his fantastic positional understanding to beat GM Shawn Rodrigue-Lemieux (CAN). Himal Gusain dominates 11th Dhamso International Rating Open 2024

IM Himal Gusain scored an unbeaten 9.5/10 to win 11th Dhamso International Chess Festival 2024. The top seed of the tournament finished a half point ahead of the rest. IM G M H Thilakarathne (SRI) scored 9/10 to secure second place. G W D M Dabarera (SRI) scored sole 8.5/10 to finish third. Himal drew against the eventual runner-up Thilakarathen and defeated the second runner-up, Dabarera. The total prize fund of the tournament was LKR 1500000. The second edition of this event is offering a first prize of ₹80000 and a total prize fund of ₹600000, an increase by ₹45000. Total 190 prizes. 44 more than the first edition are up for grabs. A grandeur event undoubtedly attracts strong players. Chiranjit Manna wins 11th Late Bharatbai Halkude Memorial Below 1800 Rating Tournament 2024

Chiranjit Manna, Arnav Kadam and Dhiman Mitra scored an unbeaten 8/9 at 11th Late Bharatbai Halkude Memorial Below 1800 Rating Tournament 2024 part of LBHM Chess Festival 2024. Chiranjit won the tournament due to better tie-break score, Arnav and Dhiman were placed second and third. The total prize fund of the entire festival was ₹3024234, for Below 1800 Rating tournament it was ₹1224111. The top three prizes were ₹125000, ₹100111 and ₹50000 along with a trophy each respectively. The three-day nine-round tournament was organized by Aryan Enterprises at Dhruv Global School in Pune, Maharashtra from 24th to 26th May 2024. This is Chiranjit's first rating tournament triumph of the year. He went on to win two more rating tournaments in Bangladesh after this.

IM Divya Deshmukh defeated her coleader WIM Ayan Allahverdiyeva (AZE) to gain sole lead 5.5/6 at FIDE World Junior 2024 Girls. WFM Sachi Jain salvaged a half point from a losing endgame against WIM Martyna Wikar (POL). Kashthuri Bhai R forced a threefold repetition as her opponent WIM Xeniya Balabayeva's (KAZ) queen got trapped. WGM Rakshitta Ravi won her game and took her score to 4.5/6. In the Open event, GM Jose Gabriel Cardoso Cardoso (COL) drew his game against GM Kazybek Nogerbek (KAZ) to maintain their lead 5/6. IM Rudik Makarian and IM L M S T De Silva (SRI) joined them to make it a four-way 5/6. Today is the sole rest day of the tournament. Round 7 starts tomorrow Sunday 9th June from 3 p.m. IST. Magnus Carlsen is the clear winner of 12th Norway Chess, Praggnanandhaa third

"Hello India, I am Magnus Carlsen. I am going to win Norway Chess." - Magnus Carlsen (NOR) said this before the start of 12th Norway Chess 2024. He made his prediction come true. Yes of course he is undoubtedly that good. For the sixth time the World no.1 won this iconic tournament in his home country. His previous wins were - 2016, 2017, 2019, 2020 and 2021. In the final round, he drew the Classical game against Fabiano Caruana (USA). He won Armageddon to become a clear champion 17.5/30. Wenjun Ju wins the inaugural Norway Chess Women 2024

Wenjun Ju (CHN) defeated Tingjie Lei (CHN) in the final round to win the inaugural Norway Chess Women 2024 with a score 19/30. However, more than the result, how it happened was surprising. Tingjie did not lose a single Classical game until Round 10. Even the commentators mentioned that she put up almost little resistance in the battle against the reigning Women's World Champion. Perhaps the cerebral effect of losing the World Championship Match last year. Who knows? Anna Muzychuk (UKR) crushed Koneru Humpy in Armageddon to become a clear second 16/30. Romanian Chess Federation invites you to play at Romania Grand Prix 2024

Romanian Chess Federation started Romania Grand Prix in 2022 with the objective of providing young Romanian players to play in strong tournaments in their home country. The federation has made great efforts to make Romania as the new European Chess Capital. The total prize fund in the entire GP 2024 is €175000, €30000 for each of thefive Grand Prix events and €25000 for the Finals. GM Shant Sargsyan (ARM) won the first leg in Bucharest on 24th March. There are still four more legs left. The second leg will be held at Cluj-Napoca on 13th and 14th June. A total of 290 players including 20 GMs, 11 IMs and 3 WGMs have registered from 16 countries across the world. That's not all, you will get to play in the same arena as Steffi Graf and Andre Agassi. IM Divya Deshmukh defeated previous round sole leader Narmin Abdinova (AZE) in Round 5 of FIDE World Junior 2024 Girls. The top seed hunted her king successfully and checkmated her on 28th move. WIM Ayan Allahverdiyeva (AZE) won against WIM Sofiia Hryzlova (SUI) to join Divya in the lead 4.5/5. They are closely followed by eleven girls including four Indians - WFM Rindhiya V, Kashthuri Bhai R, WFM Sachi Jain and Mrittika Mallick at 4/5 each. In the Open event, IM Mayank Chakraborty held the sole leader, GM Jose Gabriel Cardoso Cardoso (COL) to an exciting draw in the Ruy Lopez Berlin Defence. Vaishali suffered her third Classical game loss at Norway Chess Women 2024. It was against Tingjie Lei (CHN) in the penultimate round. Wenjun Ju (CHN) defeated Koneru Humpy in Armageddon. The latter made some irrevocable mistakes in the middlegame and had to pay a heavy price for it. Anna Muzychuk (UKR) made the fastest draw of the day against Pia Cramling (SWE). However, the legend Pia made a one-move queen blunder in Armageddon which allowed Anna to win the game and match. 12th Norway Chess R9: Ding Liren massacres Hikaru Nakamura in Armageddon

For the second consecutive round, all games of the penultimate round of 12th Norway Chess 2024 were decided in Armageddon. Not only the games were decided in Armageddon but also had clear victors means there was no decision based on clock or a draw by black. Alireza Firouzja (FRA) missed his opportunity to win against Magnus Carlsen (NOR) in Armageddon. The world champion, Ding Liren (CHN) completely decimated Hikaru Nakamura (USA) in Armageddon.
