R Praggnanandhaa scored his biggest Classical win of his career in the fourth round of 85th Tata Steel Masters 2023. The teenager grinded a relatively balanced rook, knight and many pawns endgame to beat the World no.2 and World Championship Contender, Ding Liren. Anish Giri beat Magnus Carlsen for the second time in his career in a Classical encounter, exactly after 12 years. The World no.7 has beaten the World no.1 in Blitz but Classical chess is what matters the most to any strong player. This event is called the 'Wimbledon of Chess' for a reason - it is where the mighty fall and new heroes are born. Abdusattorov defeated Parham to join the lead with Giri 3/4. Arjun Erigaisi reached an extremely difficult endgame against Levon Aronian in the third round of the Tata Steel Masters 2023. Many players would have collapsed, but the 19-year-old Indian talent is a tough nut to crack. He held his own and managed to draw the game. After the game you could see Arjun and Levon analyzing the game, trying to understand what exactly was happening. But it was all just to complex to figure out without an engine. Sourabh Mhamane scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win 360 One Mumbai Rating Open 2022. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Akshit Jha scored sole 7.5/9 to finish second. Four players finished at 7/9. IM Vikramaditya Kulkarni secured the third place due to better tie-breaks. Sourabh drew with Akshit in the final round and defeated Vikramaditya in the previous. The six-day nine-round rating tournament was organized by Indian Chess School at World Trade Center in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Total prize fund of the tournament was ₹250000. Tata Steel 2023 R3: Caruana joins the leaders

Fabiano Caruana scored the sole victory of the round in the Masters section. In an unclear position, Tata Steel Chess Masters 2021 winner, Jorden van Foreest blundered a pawn. Arjun Erigaisi almost stumbled his way in the endgame. The win was not easy to find for Aronian and the game ended in a draw. Gukesh had a solid draw with Abdusattorov. Praggnanandhaa could have pressed further if he had not traded the rook in the endgame against Keymer. B Adhiban drew with Donchenko and Vaishali lost to Sindarov. Kushagra Mohan wins 1st Bishan Singh Memorial Rating Open 2023

Top seed of the tournament, IM Kushagra Mohan, IM Chakravarthi Reddy M and second seeded IM Himal Gusain scored an unbeaten 8/9 each. Kushagra won the 1st Bishan Singh Ji Memorial Rating Open 2023. Chakravarthi and Himal were placed second and third according to tie-breaks. This is also Kushagra's first Rating Openn tournament triumph. The five-day nine-round rating tournament was organized by V4 Chess - Deccan Chess Academy, Maestro Chess Academy and Chess Maverics at Sri Kotla Vijaya Bhaskar Reddy Indoor Stadium in Hyderabad, Telangana. It is not everyday we get to see Anish Giri sacrificing a piece, let alone three. In the second round of 85th Tata Steel Chess 2023, Giri defeated Gukesh by making a thematic knight, followed by two rook sacrifices for a queen. In a post-game interview, Giri mentioned that it was part of his preparation. 17...Kh8 only invited the trouble. Arjun Erigaisi made an impressive draw against Wesley So in their first-ever Classical encounter. According to So, a lot of players would not have played 18...g5 which Arjun deemed to be a necessity. While the World no.2 showed his prowess against Gukesh, Rapport's surprise choice of Vienna Game did not have the desired effect against the former World Rapid champion. AICFB National Junior Championships for the visually challenged 2023 kicks off in Bangalore

All India Chess Federation for the Blind (AICFB) works for the visually impaired chess players of the country. One of the reasons why we have strong chess players from India who are visually impaired is because of regular tournaments being held. From 13th to 15th of January, the national juniors are being held in Bangalore. The tournament has witnessed the participation of 31 players with Sam Peniel (1341) from Tamil Nadu being the top seed. Two players from the tournament will get a chance to play at the World Junior Championships later this year in Spain. Check out our day 1 report.

Daakshin Arun: The young Chennai lad who became the National Under-13 Champion

Daakshin Arun is a prominent young talent from Chennai, Tamil Nadu, who has performed amazingly in several big tournaments at the young age of 13. However, there was one title missing from his trophy cabinet so far - the National Championship. This time, he has got it - Daakshin won the MPL 35th National Under-13 Open Chess Championships 2022!
