2nd Indore GM Open 2024 R2-3: Nandhidhaa makes a perfect start

IM Ratnakaran K, GM Deepan Chakkravarthy, IM Ameya Audi and WGM Nandhidhaa P V are the four Indians to make a perfect start at 2nd Indore GM Open 2024. Total eight players are at 3/3, four of them are Indians. Nandhidhaa won a long battle against IM Neelash Saha. Kartavya Anadkat missed a win against IM Ilamparthi A R. Daaevik Wadhawan continued his momentum by winning against IM Ayush Sharma. However, the 13-year-old lost his third round battle against Ameya. Vidit Gujrathi's simul at Ambit House in Mumbai

January 2024 is going to be an important month for Vidit Gujrathi as he gets ready for Tata Steel Masters in Wijk Aan Zee. However, just before he took his flight to Amsterdam, Vidit decided to spend a day at Ambit House in Mumbai. Along with meeting the top management team of Ambit, Vidit played a simultaneous exhibition with 17 opponents. This proved to be an exciting one as some of the players gave quite a tough fight to the India no.3. We bring you some moments from this beautiful evening.

The India no.2 and one of the biggest talents in the world of chess Pragg has entered into a long term sponsorship agreement with the Adani Group. On 5th of January we saw a tweet by Gautam Adani, the chairman of the Adani Group, announce this association. In this article we bring forth the thoughts of Pragg and his long time trainer GM R.B. Daksh Goyal and Mrittika Mallick are National Sub-Junior Open and Girls 2023 Champions

Daksh Goyal (DEL), Jihan Tejas Shah (GUJ) and Samyak Dharewa (WB) scored 8.5/11 each at 48th National Sub-Junior Under-15 Open 2023. Daksh won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Jihan and Samyak were placed second and third respectively. Only Daksh remained undefeated among them. Mrittika Mallick (WB) scored 9/11 to become champion in 39th National Sub-Junior Under-15 Girls 2023. Despite losing the fourth round and scoring a half point in the next round, she won the next five games and finished a half point ahead of the rest. Her statemate Sneha Halder (WB) secured second place 8.5/11. Sannidhi Ramakrishna Bhat (MAH), the only girl to beat the eventual champion, Mrittika, finished third 8/11. Bharat Kumar Reddy Poluri victorious at 1st Marvel Rating Open 2023

Bharat Kumar Reddy Poluri scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win 1st Marvel Rating Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Six players - GM Saptarshi RoyChowdhury, Kartavya Anadkat, Naitik R Mehta, Suresh Duvvala, Badrinath S and Vigneshwaran S scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed second to seventh respectively according to tie-breaks. Bharat drew against the eventual second runner-up, Kartavya. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹600000. 2nd Indore GM Open 2024 R1: Daaevik, Saurabh and Vivaan score upsets

Daaevik Wadhawan, Saurabh Choubey and CM Vivaan Vijay Saraogi scored upset victories in the first round of 2nd Indore GM Open 2024. They defeated IM Ritviz Parab, Sri Lanka no.2 - IM Thilakarathne G M H and IM Shahil Dey respectively. The top seed of the tournament, GM Iniyan Pa started his campaign with a smooth victory. A total of 131 players including 10 GMs, 23 IMs, 2 WGMs and 6 WIMs are taking part from 13 countries across the world. The total prize fund is ₹3500000, ₹2100000 in GM Open. Vaishali is the Arjuna Award 2023 recipient, Dronacharya Award for R B Ramesh in Chess

R Vaishali became the third Indian woman to achieve the Grandmaster title. She ended the 12-year-long wait for an Indian female to earn the highest title one can achieve in chess. Before fulfilling the GM title requirements, she won the FIDE Women's Grand Swiss 2023 and earned herself a spot in the FIDE Women's Candidates 2024. That's not all, she won Silver medal at 19th Asian Games 2022 before that and also won a team and individual Bronze medal at 44th Chess Olympiad 2022. Sahil Sanjay Shejal scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win Velammal Hospital presents 3rd Athens of the East GM Category C Below 1600 Rating Tournament 2023. Sahil finished a half point ahead of the field. Five players - Mohammed Muzammil A, Shashveen A K, Srinivasan Subramaniam, Kavinkumar G and Rishi R scored 8/9 each. They were placed second to sixth respectively according to tie-breaks. . The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹4000000 + trophies + 100 bicycles and eight electric scooty, ₹1000000 for Category C. The top three prizes were ₹100000 + bike, ₹60000 and ₹40000 along with a trophy each. Vaibhav Suri dominates Hong Kong Open 2023

GM Vaibhav Suri scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win Hong Kong International Open 2023. He won the tournament with a round to spare, finished a staggering one and a half point ahead of others. Four players - Gehua Wen (CHN), GM Rui Gao (CHN), IM Yuanhe Zhao (CHN) and Songliang Cai (CHN) scored 7/9 each. They were placed second to fifth respectively according to tie-breaks.Vaibhav defeated second seeded and eventual second runner-up, Rui. Four players - Arpit Pandey, Vedant Rupeshbhai Varasada, Phani Kumari and Ranjith Pratap scored 8/9 each at Winter Cup Below 1600 Rating Tournament 2023. Arpit Pandey became champion due to better tie-breaks. The remaining three secured second to fourth place overall. Arpit and Phani remained undefeated among them. The tournament was organized in memory of Late Advocate Mr. Premchand Mogra. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹1500000. The top three prizes were ₹111000, ₹71000 and ₹41000 along with a trophy each. A total of 159 prizes and three prizes above ₹100000 were up for grabs. Kumar Gaurav scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win South Point School Guwahati Rating Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Four players - Arpan Das, Y Dhanabir Singh, Soram Rahul Singh and Oinam Ningthem scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed second to fifth respectively. Only Kumar and Dhanabir remained undefeated among top ten. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹500000. Harshit Raja wins Winter Chess Classic 2023

Harshit Raja won Winter Chess Classic 2023 for his team A. His teammates were - IM Josiah Stearman (USA), GM Lazaro Bruzon Batista (USA), GM Mikhail Antipov, GM Grigoriy Oparin (USA) and GM Benjamin Gledura (HUN). Harshit scored 20.5 points and earned US$ 4000, $2500 as team prize and $1500 individual. Oparin, Antipov and Bruzon also earned the same as Harshit. Ethan Vaz becomes the eighth International Master from Goa

12-year-old Ethan Vaz became India's first International Master of 2024 on 3rd January. He drew against GM Valeriy Neverov (UKR) in the ninth and final round of Vezerkepzo GM Christmas 2023 in Budapest, to earn his final IM-norm. The talented kid from Goa also became the eighth IM from his state. Anurag Mhamal, Rohan Ahuja, Bhakti Kulkarni, Leon Luke Mendonca, Ameya Audi, Nitish Belurkar and Ritviz Parab are the first seven. Ethan earned his first IM-norm in August 2023 at 29th Abu Dhabi Masters in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Exactly three months later, he secured his second IM-norm at Vezerkepzo November GM in Budapest, Hungary. The final norm was scored in a little over a month later. The boy's quest for GM title continues as he started Vezerkepzo New Year GM 2024 with a victory over GM Baadur Jobava (GEO).

Kishan Gangolli conquers his eighth AICFB National Championship

The top seed and defending champion - Kishan Gangolli (KAR) scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win 17th AICFB National Premier Championship for the Visually Challenged 2023-24. This is his eighth AICFB National title. Subhendu Kumar Patra (ODI) scored 7/9 to secure second place. Ashvin K Makwana (GUJ) was placed third with a score of 6.5/9. Kishan drew against both runner-up - Subhendu and Ashvin. The top three prizes were ₹35000, ₹25000 and ₹15000 along with a trophy each. This championship is the top most selection tournament for the Visually Challenged players in India. The top twelve finishers are selected to represent India in the upcoming Purple International Chess Festival for Visually Challenged 2024 slated to take place in Goa.
