Gukesh to battle Carlsen and world's best at Weissenhaus Freestyle G.O.A.T. Challenge

A new super tournaments starts in Hamburg, Germany today. But this is not just any other super tournament. This event is introduced by none other than the World no.1 Magnus Carlsen himself. It will not be played in conventional chess rules. It will be in Fischer-Random format or as the World no.1 likes to say, Freestyle. Hence, the name WEISSENHAUS Freestyle Chess G.O.A.T. Challenge. Carlsen's handpicked opponents for this eight-player tournament are - Fabiano Caruana (USA), Ding Liren (CHN), Alireza Firouzja (FRA), Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB), D Gukesh, Vincent Keymer (GER) and Levon Aronian (USA). There will be four rounds of Rapid games played today in Playoffs. Gukesh will face Carlsen in the second round. Round 1 starts today from 1 p.m. local time, 5:30 p.m. IST. Sayantan Das clinches 1st SOA GM 2024, Diptayan Ghosh second and Sambit Panda third

GM Sayantan Das won the 1st SOA GM International Chess Festival 2024 scoring 8/10. He finished a half point ahead of the field. GM Diptayan Ghosh, IM Sambit Panda and IM Neelash Saha scored 7.5/10 each. They secured second, third and fourth place according to tie-breaks. Sayantan scored 7/8 in his last eight games after losing the second round game to WFM Ellen Fredericia Nilssen (DEN). She went on to score a WIM-norm. Sambit also made a fantastic comeback after losing his third round game in just eight moves against FM Goutham Krishna H. CM Soham Kamotra, Jethro Dino Aquino (PHI) and Vignesh Advaith Vemula scored an IM-norm each. Producing four norms has definitely made the inaugural edition of this event quite successful. Srijon Saha victorious at 2nd War of Knights School Rating 2024

Srijon Saha scored an unbeaten 7/8 to win 2nd War of Knights School Rating Tournament 2024. Second seeded Srijon finished a half point ahead of the competition. Four players - CM Sankalan Shah, Rishan Debnath, Narendra Agarwal and Mudil Dharewa scored 6.5/8 each. They were placed second to fifth respectively according to tie-breaks. The total cash prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹20000, ₹15000 and ₹10000 along with a trophy each. The six-day rating tournament was organized by The Knight Chess Academy from 20th to 25th January 2024 at Swami Vivekananda Institute of Modern Sciences in Sonarpur, West Bengal. Mummana Venkata Ruthvik wins 2nd Sri Chess Academy Rating Open 2024

Mummana Venkata Ruthvik and Ashutosh Kumar scored an unbeaten 7.5/8 at 2nd Sri Chess Academy Rating Open 2024. The 14-year-old Mummana won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. Ashutosh was placed second. Mohit Kumar Soni, Srivardhan Reddy Devareddy, Hariram Saikrishna Perecharla (USA), Sreetej B and D Lakshmanrao scored 7/8 each. They secured third to seventh place respectively. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹400000. The top three prizes were ₹40000, ₹30000 and ₹20000 along with a trophy each. Mummana defeated the eventual second runner-up Mohit in the seventh round. Christ College Irinjalakuda, Kerala, pioneers Chess Literacy in Physical Education

Chess and education go hand-in-hand. The sport is a mandatory subject in various schools all across India. However, it is quite rare to see chess getting included in a college academic program. In a historic move, Christ College, Irinjalakuda in Thrissur, Kerala, has decided to integrate chess in their Physical Education curriculum. A total of 146 Bachelor in Physical Education students have undertaken a five-month training program in chess. The initiative is aimed at equipping these students to teach chess in schools and foster a comprehensive awareness of the game. The path paved by G N Gopal, S L Narayanan and Nihal Sarin have already inspired a lot of chess players in Kerala. Dibya Jyoti Sarkar wins 3rd Maa Manik Memorial Rating Open 2024

Dibya Jyoti Sarkar, Ishan Das, Iftikar Alom Mazumdar, Neelabh Jyoti Borthakur, Bijit Chetia and Sakhawat Hussain scored 7/9 each at 3rd Maa Manik Memorial Rating Open 2024. Dibya Jyoti won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. The remaining five secured second to sixth position respectively. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹175000. The top three prizes were ₹24000, ₹18000 and ₹15000 along with a trophy each. The six-day rating tournament was organized by Chess Family, Agartala from 21st to 26th January 2024 at Chess Hall, NSRCC Complex in Agartala, Tripura. 12th National Schools Chess Championship 2024 kicks off at Patna

The 12th National Schools Chess Championships kicked off today at Gyan Bhawan, Patna! A glorious inauguration ceremony marked the beginning of one of India's most prestigious and important tournaments. 2 rounds of classical chess was played at the National Schools Chess Championships today - among 12 different sections starting from Under-7 to the Under-17 age category. Group e4 raises Rs.1.2 crore for Indian chess talents in last 3 years

A phone call and then a message on a WhatsApp group is all it took to setup something truly unique in Indian chess - Group e4. A crowd funding initiative started by Satya Prabhakar, the founder of Sulekha.com and Vishy Anand, this group has seen the involvement of over 200 families. How did this come about and how were they able to raise Rs.1.2 crores in the last 3 years? We speak about this story in the article. On 7th of January 2024, the entire group met at the Madras Club. Adamas University dominates All India Inter Zonal Inter University Women 2024 with a perfect 10/10

Adamas University won All India Inter Zonal Inter University Women Chess Tournament 2024 scoring a perfect 10/10. They defeated both runners-up teams by 3-1 without conceding a single game. The defending champions, SRM IST, Chennai scored 8/10 to secure second place. Six teams scored 6/10. Out of them, University of Delhi was placed third according to tie-breaks. Adamas was the top seed of the event, being the only team to have three WIMs and a rating average of over 2000. Samriddhaa Ghosh and WIM Sakshi Chitlange were the top scorer for the team 4.5/5, followed by WIM Arpita Mukherjee and WIM Chandreyee Hajra scoring 2.5/3 each. Diya Chowdhury scored 2.5/4. IM Aaditya Dhingra scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win Noida Rapid Rating Open 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Four players - Harish Sharma, CM Aashman Gupta, Harshit Pawar and K Ashleesh scored 7.5/9 each. They secured second to fifth respectively. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹500000. The top three prizes were ₹50000, ₹25000 and ₹15000 along with a trophy each. Aaditya defeated the eventual runner-up Harish in the fifth round. The two-day rapid rating tournament was organized by RDG Global Ventures Pvt. Ltd. on 13th and 14th January 2024 at Ananda Bliss in Noida, Uttar Pradesh.

S Mari Arul clinches 20th International Chess Puzzle Solving Contest 2024

When it comes to competitions and championships related to chess, tournaments are the first thing that comes to mind. However, the multifarious nature of chess has another type of competition - puzzle solving. On Sunday 21st January 2024, Aladi Aruna Foundation organized Aladi Aruna Memorial 20th International Chess Solving Contest 2024. The event saw the participation of various strong players. FM S Mari Arul won the Advanced category scoring 21 points. S Raghuraman scored 20 points to secure second place. Seetharaman Kalyan was placed third scoring 17 points. Rohan Vijay Shandilya wins 4th Navin Kumar Sinha Memorial Rapid Rating Open 2024

Rohan Vijay Shandilya and Subhabrata Roy scored an unbeaten 8/9 each at 4th Navin Kumar Sinha Memorial Rapid Rating Open 2024. Jharkhand's very own Rohan won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. Subhabrata secured second place. Arpan Das and Sudhir Kumar Sinha scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed third and fourth respectively. Rohan defeated the eventual second runner-up Arpan in the seventh round. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹100000. The top three prizes were ₹20000 + trophy, ₹12000 and ₹7500 along with a trophy each. Entry fee was only ₹500. Rohan is the reigning Jharkhand State champion. GM Eltaj Safarli (AZE) and GM Raunak Sadhwani scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 each at 5th Fujairah Endurance Blitz Rating (Above 2000) 2024. Eltaj won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Raunak was placed second. The sixth round battle between them ended in a draw. They both finished a full point ahead of the field. GM Farrukh Amonatov (TJK) scored sole 6.5/9 to secure third place. The total prize fund of the tournament was AED 130000. The top three prizes in Blitz were AED 7000, 6000 and 5000 each respectively.
