Levon Aronian made a quick 18-move draw against D Gukesh in the final round of WR Chess Masters 2023. The world no.17 just wanted to end his bad streak of Classical games. He wanted to be in a much more relaxed headspace. Well if anyone knows anything about tie-breaks, it has to be Aronian as he is the only person in history to have won the World Cup twice. Ian Nepomniachtchi won a long battle against Vincent Keymmer to make the Playoffs a three-way battle. MPL National Rapid 2023 R1-8: Mitrabha Guha emerges sole leader

GM Mitrabha Guha (WB) has emerged sole leader 7/8 after eight rounds of MPL National Rapid Chess Championship 2023. He drew with the defending champion and the top seed of the tournament, GM Aravindh Chithambaram (TN) in the seventh round. Five players are trailing him by a half point at 6.5/8 each. They are - Aravindh, IM Dhulipalla Bala Chandra Prasad (AP), IM Ravi Teja S (AP), IM Nubairshah Shaikh (MAH) and GM Raja Rithvik R (TEL). The reigning National Women champion, WGM Divya Deshmukh (MAH) is currently the top female scorer 6/8. Sethuraman wins 39th Cappelle la Grande Open 2023 on his 30th birthday, Harsha Bharathakoti second

GM Sethuraman S P gave himself the best gift on his 30th birthday. He won 39th Cappelle la Grande Open 2023. Both Sethuraman and GM Harsha Bharathakoti scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 each. Sethuraman won the tournament on tie-breaks, Harsha was adjudged second. The game between them in the penultimate round ended in a draw. GM Krishnan Sasikiran is the other Indian to make a top ten finish. He scored 7/9 and was placed fifth according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was €12000. The top three prizes were €2000 and a trophy, €1500 and €1200 each respectively. WIM Mounika Akshaya Bommini won the Best Woman prize.

Gukesh or Aronian - Who will win WR Chess Masters 2023?

D Gukesh faced Jan-Krzysztof Duda for the very first time in a Classical rated game in the penultimate round of WR Chess Masters 2023. The 44th Chess Olympiad individual Gold medalist managed to hold his own against the World Cup 2021 winner. He recollected Caruana's win over Ponomariov in 2014 and also the American's annotations on a particular position. The teenager will face Levon Aronian in the final round to decide the winner. A win makes Gukesh a clear champion, however a draw means he will have to play the Playoffs. If Nepomniachtchi wins against Keymer, a three-way Playoff can also become a possibility. Six new champions crowned at MPL 10th National Amateur Chess Championship 2023

The tenth edition of MPL National Amateur Chess Championships 2023 witnessed a total participation of 346 players from 21 different states, union territories and units across the nation. Six new champions were crowned in six different rating categories. They are - Sham R (TN) in Below 1700 Open, Sanchita Yadav (UP) in Below 1700 Women, Daksh Goyal (DEL) in Below 2000 Open, Rajanya Datta (WB) in Below 2000 Women, Amardeep Bartakke (MAH) in Below 2300 Open and Sneha Halder (WB) in Below 2300 Women. D Gukesh had played only two Classical rated games against Andrey Esipenko until yesterday. Both shared a win each with the black pieces. In the seventh round of WR Chess Masters 2023, the 44th Chess Olympiad individual Gold medalist, just simply outsmarted his opponent on the board. He realized when his opponent had no idea what to do and showed the lack of understanding of where to put which piece, unlike Gukesh who exactly knew how to improve his pieces' position. Prasannaa S decimates MLA Chashak Rating Open 2023 with a perfect 9/9

Second seeded FM Prasannaa S scored a perfect 9/9 to win MLA Chashak All India Rating Open 2023. He finished a whopping 1.5 points ahead of the field. Top seed of the tournament IM Vikramaditya Kulkarni and third seeded Ram Prakash scored 7.5/9 each to secure second and third place respectively. The total prize fund was ₹401000. The top three prizes were ₹51000, ₹35000 and ₹21000 along with a trophy each respectively. This is Prasannaa's first tournament victory of the year. WR Chess Masters 2023 R6: Aronian draws a thriller against So, Praggnanandhaa tests Giri

Levon Aronian had the most exciting game of the sixth round at WR Chess Masters 2023. He said it correctly that one cannot convert all advantages in a game as the opponents are quite strong and they will fight back. The two-time World Cup winner was in a fighting mood and was on the verge of a victory. However, he missed a move in a continuation, which he realized after the game. R Praggnanandhaa decided against a guaranteed perpetual after sacrificing an exchange in the endgame. He fought for nearly seven hours but his opponent Anish Giri did not crumble. Both Wesley So and D Gukesh remain a full point behind the leader Aronian at 3.5/6 each. 13-year-old World U-14 Champion Ilamparthi A R becomes India's latest International Master

The reigning World Under-14 Open champion, Ilamparthi A R became India's first International Master of the year on 14th February. In the sixth round of 21st Rochefort Chess Festival Masters 2023, the 13-year-old drew with GM Momchil Nikolov (BUL) to cross 2400 in the live ratings. The teenager scored his first IM-norm at Svetozar Gligoric Memorial Masters in July 2022. Then he clinched Gold at World Youth Under-14 Open which earned him his second IM-norm in September. In another two months, he scored his final IM-norm at Chessable Sunway Sitges Open 2022. We hope the boy becomes a Grandmaster soon as he mentioned after becoming World U-14 champion last year. WR Chess Masters 2023 R5: Gukesh misses against Nepomniachtchi

D Gukesh made a great impression in his first Classical encounter against Ian Nepomniachtchi. The 44th Chess Olympiad individual Gold medalist had a great opportunity to beat the world championship contender and possibly the next world champion. However, the teenager missed it and the game ended in draw. R Praggnanandhaa had a small chance against Jan-Krzysztof Duda. However, it was neither concrete nor easy for a human to push for a win. Vignesh N R becomes India's 80th and first Grandmaster brothers with Visakh

IM Vignesh N R became India's 80th Grandmaster on 29th January 2023. He defeated IM Ilja Schneider (GER) in the final round to cross 2500 in the live ratings. The win also earned him the first place at 24th NordWest Cup 2023. His brother GM Visakh Narayanan Rajeshwari became India's 59th Grandmaster back in 2019. Thus, Vignesh and Visakh have etched their name in history by becoming India's first brothers to become Grandmasters. After becoming GM, he returned to his home state Tamil Nadu to play for RSPB A at MPL 42nd National Team Open 2023. He scored an unbeaten 7/9 to ensure his team won a Bronze. Venkatesh M R clinches 21st Dolomitenbank Open Lienz 2023

GM Venkatesh M R defeated GM Sandipan Chanda in the final round to win 21st Dolomitenbank Open Lienz 2023. There were five players at 6.5/8 each heading into the final round. Venkatesh was the only person to win his game among the pack. A well-timed exchange sacrifice allowed Venkatesh to create and seize the opportunity for a first place finish. Venkatesh won €2000 and a trophy. The only other Indian to make a top ten finish is Sandipan. A last round loss pushed him back to seventh place. He received €250 as his prize. Table Tennis and joy on the rest day of the WR Chess Masters 2023

Different tournaments have different kinds of rest days! At the WR Chess Masters 2023, the players and organizers had a great time with a well organized mini-table tennis event. 7 out of the 10 participants of the main tournament took part in this round robin tournament with Gelfand, Dana Reizneice and Wadim Rosenstein joining them. It was a keenly contested event with Andrey Esipenko edging everyone out and taking the top spot. Sagar Shah who travelled to Dusseldorf brings you a fun report.

Diptayan Ghosh wins 21st Rochefort Chess Festival Masters 2023, Harsha Bharathakoti third

GM Diptayan Ghosh headed into the final round as the sole leader scoring 7/8 at 21st Rochefort Chess Festival Masters 2023. A last round loss against GM Momchil Nikolov allowed four more players to finish at 7/9 each. It did not affect Diptayan's championship chances as he had better tie-breaks. IM Kirk Ghazarian, GM Harsha Bharathakoti, Momchil and IM Peio Duboue were placed second to fifth respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was €8000.
