China to host Women's Candidates Final and Women's World Championship Match

The Women's World Championship Match will be played in Shanghai and Chongqing, China from 3rd to 25th July 2023. The reigning Women's World Championn, Ju Wenjun will face the winner of FIDE Women's Candidates 2022-23 final between Lei Tingjie and Tan Zhongyi which will take place in Chongqing from 27th March to 6th April 2023. Wenjun has already defeated Zhongyi to dethrone her World title reign in 2018. Will Zhongyi be able to set up a rematch by winning the Candidates Final? Nilanta Chanda wins Chess for Everyone Rating Open in Srinagar

Nilanta Chanda extended his sole lead by a full point 7.5/8 heading into the final round. Four players were in pursuit at 6.5/8 each. A last round loss against Faisal Farooq did not deter his championship chances. Nilanta won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. Zeeshan Ali lost to Javed Ahmed Mir. Both Javed and Faisal ended up scoring 7.5/9 each. They were placed second and third respectively according to tie-breaks. The top three prizes were ₹3000, ₹2000 and ₹1000 along with a trophy each. SRM IST Chennai becomes All India Inter University Women Chess Champion 2023

The defending champion Adamas University and SRM Institute of Science and Technology Chennai scored 8/10. SRM won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. They scored more game points than Adamas. Thus, the only unbeaten team of the tournament, Adamas had to settle for second place. University of Madras edged past University of Mumbai and University of Delhi on tie-breaks to finish third with a score of 7/10. Krithigga K (SRM IST), WIM Arpita Mukherjee (Adamas), Sudipa Haldar (University of Calcutta), Poorna Sri M K (SRM IST), Divyabharathi Masanam (University of Madras) and Chetana D (Osmania University) won individual Gold on Board no. 1-6 each respectively. On 1st March 2023 at 5th Annual Asian Chess Excellence Awards, several Indian players and the Indian governing body of chess were awarded for their fantastic achievements in 2022. Pranav Venkatesh aces Promethean Rapid Rating Open 2023

GM Pranav Venkatesh scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to clinch Promethean Rapid Rating Open 2023. He started with eight straight wins and gained a full point lead heading into the final round. Since a draw in the final round was enough for him to become champion, he drew with the eventual runner-up IM Rathanvel V S. Three more players IM Mehar Chinna Reddy C H, IM Ratnakaran K and IM Nitin S scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed third to fifth respectively according to tie-breaks. Sayantan Das convincingly clinches 6th Cannes Chess Open 2023, becomes India's 81st Grandmaster

IM Sayantan Das won 6th Cannes Chess Open A part of 36th International Games Festival. He defeated the top seed of the tournament, GM Alexander Motylev in the final round to become a clear champion 7.5/9. This win also helped him to cross 2500 in the live ratings and become India's 81st and Kolkata, West Bengal's 11th Grandmaster. The total prize fund of the tournament was €8000. The top three prizes were €1800, €1200 and €700 along with a trophy each. Sayantan had fulfilled all the norm requirements in January 2017. However, he finally completed the rating requirements on Sunday 26th February 2023. GM Diptayan Ghosh is the only other Indian to make a top ten finish, scoring 7/9 and was placed fourth. Laxman triumphs at CMI Tessellate Rapid Rating Open 2023

GM Laxman R R scored an unbeaten 7.5/8 to win CMI Tessellate Rapid Rating Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the competition and the sole draw he conceded was against 15-year-old Aswin Sairam. Three players Sai Vishwesh C, Arun R U and Mridav M scored 7/8 each. They were placed second to fourth respectively according to tie-breaks. Only Sai remained undefeated among them. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹103250. The top three prizes were ₹20000 + trophy, ₹15000 and ₹10000 each respectively. This is Laxman's first rating tournament victory of 2023 and quite possibly many more to come as he has the habit of winning a lot of tournaments.

Gukesh is just 16 years old, but no one considers him as a young talent anymore. He is a full-blown top GM. His live rating is 2730 and he is currently world no.20. It would be appropriate to call Ilamparthi, a young talent. The boy is 13 years old. He is the current world under-14 champion and an IM with an Elo of 2423. Both Gukesh and Ilamparthi did really well in Dusseldorf at the WR Masters and Juniors respectively. Gukesh and Nihal win Best Young Achiever and Spirit of Sports at Sportstar Aces Awards 2023

On 28th February 2023, Sportstar premiered the Sportstar Aces Awards 2023 on their youtube channel. D Gukesh was nominated for Best Young Achievers Male award along with Vishwanath Suresh (Boxing), Payas Jain (Table Tennis) and S Gurunaidu (Weightlifting). Nihal Sarin was nominated for Spirit of Sports award along with three other nominees. Both Gukesh and Nihal won the awards in their respective nominated categories. This was Nihal's second consecutive award at the Sportstar Aces Awards after he won the BYJU's Young Athlete of the Year (Male) award in 2022. Vishy Anand and Pravin Thipsay also attended this event. Satheesh wins Chalakudy Chess Academy Below 1600 Rating Tournament 2023

Satheesh M scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win Chalakudy Chess Academy Below 1600 Rating Tournament 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the field and also defeated the eventual runner-up. 12-year-old Sayanth Krishna scored 8/9 to finish second. He gained a massive 150 Elo rating points. 14-year-old Sidharth Mohan and Jos Paul Davis scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed third and fourth according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹300000. Top three prizes were ₹25000, ₹15000 and ₹10000 along with a trophy each. Aravindh Chithambaram dominates MPL National Blitz Chess Championship 2023 with a perfect 11/11

GM Aravindh Chithambaram (TN) just keeps creating record after record. He scored a perfect 11/11 to win MPL National Blitz Chess Championship 2023. Thus, he became the first person in Indian chess history to become National Rapid and Blitz champion for three consecutive editions* between 2019 and 2023. Of course his 11/11 first place finish record cannot be broken unless the total number of rounds increases in future editions which is highly unlikely. IM Himal Gusain won 19th Caspian Cup Category A 2023 scoring an unbeaten 7/9. Three other players also scored the same and remained undefeated. They are - GM Hovik Hayrapetyan (ARM), IM Kushagra Mohan and IM Arash Tahbaz (IRI). They were placed second to fourth according to tie-breaks. The top three prizes were 3000000, 2000000 and 1600000 Iranian Real which is approximately ₹58000 as the first prize.
