Meet Purvansh Shah: An Emerging Chess Talent who Dreams of Becoming the Youngest World Champion

by Jyotsna Bhushan - 18/08/2026

Every year, thousands of children across India sit down at a chessboard for the first time. Emerging young talent Purvansh Shah was one of them, at age six, in Bangalore. What has followed since is a story built on daily habit: hours of practice, tournament after tournament, careful analysis of every loss, and a family that decided early on to treat his interest seriously. That combination has taken him from his first school-level win to the Karnataka State Schools Chess Championship (U-7 Open) title and many more.

Purvansh Shah's Chess Journey: Small Steps, Big Dreams

Purvansh and his father, Deepak Shah, conversed about the games, the routine behind them, and where he hopes it all leads. Nothing less than representing India and, one day, becoming a Grandmaster.

A Curiosity That Turned Into a Calling

Deepak Shah describes Purvansh's introduction to chess as just an "indoor activity" at first. It was a normal pastime activity. But soon, they began to notice Purvansh's keen interest and curiosity in the game. He would be engrossed in chess even after other children would have moved on to something else. He enjoyed solving puzzles, analysing positions, and spending hours at the chessboard. The family fully supported his interest.

The turning point came with his very first tournament win, at the Sajjan Academy & Gopalan Olympia Inter-School Chess Tournament in the Under-6 category. That victory told the family that this wasn't just a phase; it was something real. Purvansh showed promising results and a load of potential for the game. From there, structured training, professional coaching, and regular tournament exposure became part of Purvansh's life.

"I enjoy solving difficult positions, finding combinations, and learning new ideas. Every game is different, and I like playing against strong opponents because every game teaches me something new."

Building the Complete Player

Purvansh currently trains under coach Jayaram Ramanna, who has worked with Him since April 2025 and coaches him at no cost. The family credits his guidance with shaping his calculation, positional understanding, opening preparation, endgame technique, and tournament temperament. But the coaching doesn't stop at the academy door. Deepak Shah is involved in every part of his son's chess life: tournament planning, opening prep, daily practice, physical fitness, and, perhaps most importantly, motivation.

"Every game is analysed together, every tournament becomes a learning opportunity, and every setback is treated as a lesson," Deepak says. It's a philosophy that has visibly shaped Purvansh's character. Chess, his father believes, has taught his son discipline, patience, focus, and resilience and the ability to stay calm under pressure and think before acting. "We have seen him become more confident, humble, responsible, and determined through this journey."

That mindset was on full display after one particularly tough defeat. Rather than sulk, Purvansh wanted to immediately sit down and figure out exactly where the game had gone wrong. For a family watching their son grow up at the board, it was a small moment that said a great deal about who he is. Losses are a brutal reality of every sport, but taking it with grace at such a young age and immediately wanting to go over the mistakes displays how much love Purvansh has for chess. It shows how he plays chess out of genuine love and intrigue.

Coach Ramanna recognised his potential early on and says: "He was already top 3 in the Bangalore District Championship, and his games showed a lot of potential," adding that Purvansh grasps concepts typically meant for players two years his senior. He's clear-eyed about what stands between Purvansh and his calling. "Purvansh is a fighter who isn't able to play a lot of tournaments, unlike his peers. With the right exposure to tournaments, I think he can be a strong player in years to come," he says.

A Trophy Cabinet Beyond His Years

The results have followed the process. Purvansh's growing list of achievements includes:

  • VCON Karnataka State Amateur FIDE Champion (U-7)

  • Khannur Open FIDE Classical Champion (U-7)

  • 3rd Place, Akshayakalpa Karnataka State Championship (U-8)

  • 1st Place, U-8 Boys, Karnataka State Amateur Below-2000 Championship

  • 2nd Place, MIT AOE Pune International FIDE Tournament (U-8)

  • BBMP Mindmaster Sub-Junior Award

Impressive as the list is, Deepak is quick to point out that the family isn't chasing numbers. "We are proud that he continues to challenge himself by playing strong FIDE-rated tournaments against experienced players, which has accelerated his growth." The immediate goals are about substance over show: sharpening classical chess, deepening his understanding of the game, and gaining experience against strong opposition; all in service of "a complete player with strong calculation, positional understanding, endgame technique, time management, and the right mindset."

If we ask Purvansh which of his own games makes him proudest, the answer comes with a flash of pride. He says, "The game I am most proud of was my over-the-board tournament game where I delivered a reset checkmate," he says. "Although I also executed Legal's Mate in an online game, achieving a beautiful checkmate in a real tournament felt much more rewarding. It gave me confidence and reminded me to always look for tactical opportunities."

Keeping the Joy in the Game

For all the titles and travel, the Shah family is deliberate about one thing above all: chess must stay fun. "We always remind Purvansh that enjoying chess is more important than winning trophies," Deepak says. At home, the emphasis falls on learning rather than results; good moves, fighting spirit, and improvement are celebrated just as loudly as victories.

That balance isn't always easy to strike. Competitive chess at this level demands serious commitment from the whole family, like juggling school, training, tournaments, and travel, along with the financial costs like entry fees and accommodation. "Despite these challenges," Deepak says, "we have always believed in supporting his passion and giving him every opportunity to improve."

We are not chasing ratings alone. Our goal is to build a complete player. Purvansh's dream is to represent India, achieve the title of Grandmaster and become the youngest world champion.

A Home Away From Home

The Bangalore Chess Club has become a cornerstone of Purvansh's development, giving him a competitive environment to test himself against strong players regularly. The family speaks warmly of the club's role not just as a training ground, but as a community that welcomed Purvansh in, offered sponsorship support, and encouraged him to play alongside its members whenever possible.

That kind of involvement isn't unusual for Bangalore Chess Club. Founded in 2015, the club has grown from a free, open-to-all meetup group into one of the more active grassroots chess communities in the country, running weekly tournaments, mall pop-ups, and simuls across the city. The Club has built a reputation for giving back to the game it helps grow, including through initiatives like the Big Chess Summer Camp run in partnership with ChessBase India.

Dreaming Big, One Move at a Time

The family extends its gratitude to Sagar Shah, Ashwin Subramanian, and coach Jayaram Ramanna for believing in Purvansh and pushing him to work harder and dream bigger, as well as to the Bangalore Chess Club for welcoming him into its fold. "We hope his story inspires more young children," the family says, "to enjoy chess, work hard, believe in themselves, and dream big."

It's early days yet in what promises to be a long journey, but between the discipline instilled by the board, the support of a dedicated family, and a coach sharpening his every move, Purvansh Shah already looks like a player writing the opening chapters of his amazing upcoming chess career.
