Pranav Venkatesh and Divya Deshmukh clinch Silver at Asian Continental Blitz 2023 Open and Women

FM Arystan Isanzhulov (KAZ), GM Pranav Venkatesh and GM Denis Makhnev (KAZ) scored 7.5/9 each at Asian Continental Blitz 2023 Open. They won Gold, Silver and Bronze medal each respectively. Pranav's sole loss of the event was against the eventual winner, Isanzhulov. All three podium finishers suffered a loss each. The defending Asian Continental Blitz Women champion, IM Divya Deshmukh scored 7/9 to secure Silver. She finished a half point behind the winner, WIM Xeniya Balabayeva (KAZ) 7.5/9. WGM Turmunk Munkhzul (MGL) scored 6.5/9 to clinch Bronze. Divya lost two games against Xeniya and WIM Nazerke Nurgali (KAZ). GM Sethuraman S P is the only other Indian to make a top ten finish. Divya wins a medal in consecutive Asian Blitz Women event

Last year, then WGM Divya Deshmukh won Gold at Asian Continental Blitz 2022 Women. On Saturday 3rd June, IM Divya Deshmukh scored 7/9 to secure Silver in the Asian Continental Blitz 2023 Women. The total prize fund of the Blitz event was US$9700, $6000 in Open and $3700 in Women. Top three prizes in the Open were $3000, $2000 and $1000, and $2000, $1000 and $700 each among the Women.

Inaugural first move

A total of 78 players including 12 GMs and 19 IMs in the Open, 31 players including 4 IMs, 4 WGMs and 7 WIMs in the Women, took part from 18 countries across the world including India. The nine-round Swiss League Blitz tournament was held on 3rd June 2023 in Almaty, Kazakhstan. It was organized by Kazakhstan Chess Federation and Asian Chess Federation. The time control of the tournament was 3 minutes + 2 seconds increment.
