8th Sharjah Masters: Can Aditya Mittal stop Anish Giri?
by Shahid Ahmed - 25/05/2025
GM Anish Giri (NED) drew with GM Velimir Ivic (SRB) in just four moves in the penultimate round of 8th Sharjah Masters 2025. It allowed GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) to catch up with him 6/8. The World Rapid 2021 was determined to play for a win. It became evident when he sacrificed his knight for a couple of pawns in a double rook and double knight endgame. GM Aditya Mittal outplayed GM Alan Pichot (ESP) after the latter gave control of the center. Anish will face Aditya in the final round and GM M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI) will be up against Abdusattorov. Round 9 starts today at 3 p.m. local time, 4:30 p.m. IST. Photos: Himank Ghosh

Yihan - Mayank
Position after 22.Rxg7+
22.Rxg7+ is an ambitious sacrifice by Yihan Meng (CHN, 2443) which actually does not work because White does not have enough material to support the queen. It is nothing but a scare tactc. IM Mayank Chakraborty (2436) played the only move 22...Kxg7 23.Qe7+ Kg6 24.Bxe4+ Nxe4 25.Ke2 Rag8 26.f5+ Kh5! and Black went on to win the game.
