88th Tata Steel 2026 R8: World Champion D Gukesh bounces back

by Shahid Ahmed - 26/01/2026

Anish Giri (NED) handed Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) his first loss in Round 8 of 88th Tata Steel Masters 2026. Despite having a full point lead, Abdusattorov was not in a mood to play a quiet game and stay ahead. He wanted to play for the maximum. Giri got a pleasant position by move no.20 and his opponent's position kept getting worse. The reigning World Champion, D Gukesh bounced back with an emphatic victory against Vladimir Fedoseev (SLO). Aravindh Chithambaram and Yagis Kaan Erdogmus (TUR) drew against Arjun Erigaisi and R Praggnanandhaa respectively. Today is the second of three rest days. Round 9 starts tomorrow Tuesday 27th January at 2 p.m. local time, 6:30 p.m. IST for both Masters and Challengers section. Photo: Lennart Ootes / Tata Steel Chess

Giri ends Abdusattorov's unbeaten run, wins two in-a-row

Anish Giri's wins over Nodirbek Abdusattorov caused the latter's lead to be reduced by a half point. Abdusattorov is at 5.5/8. Javokhir Sindarov drew against Vincent Keymer to move to 5/8. Matthias Bluebaum could not make the most out of the advantage he got against last year's Challenger event winner, Thai Dai Van Nguyen. In the Challengers section, GM Marc` Andria Maurizzi (FRA) and GM Andy Woodward (USA) maintained their lead 6.5/8 as they defeated IM Miaoyi Lu (CHN) and IM Faustino Oro (ARG) respectively. FM Vedant Panesar defended a losing same color bishop endgame against GM Daniil Yuffa (ESP) as the GM could not find a way to win the game.

Abdusattorov - Giri: 0-1

Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB, 2751) and Anish Giri (NED, 2760) have played eleven Classical rated games against each other. Abdusattorov won one, the remaining ten ended in draws which means Giri was yet to beat Abdusattorov. It was time for Giri to change that statistic.

Position after 18...f3

White landed himself in trouble early in the game. The pawn on f3 certainly made White's position quite uncomfortable. The h4-knight remained out of action for the majority of the game.

Position after 50...e3!

Giri found a beautiful finish 50...e3! which started with a knight sacrifice 47...Rb2! 48.Rxc5 Rb4+ 49.Rc4 c5+ 50.Kc3 e3! 51.Rh4 Rb1 and it's over as White cannot stop both e3 and f3 pawns from being promoted. It was Giri's 205th game at Tata Steel A tournaments.

Fedoseev - Gukesh: 0-1

Vladimir Fedoseev (SLO, 2705) and World Champion, D Gukesh (2754) played four Classical rated games against each other. Gukesh won one and the remanining three ended in draws.

Position after 37...Kg7

In a difficult position, White blundered 38.Nxc3?? Gukesh found the beautiful Rb3!-+ 39.Qd2 Qb4 40.Bxg6 Rbxc3 41.Bc2 and White resigned as Rxf3+ drops more material.
