WJCC Round 11+12: Xiong becomes the Champion with a round to spare

Jeffery Xiong of the USA scored a comfortable victory with the black pieces to become the World Junior Chess Champion 2016 with a round to spare. The girls' section saw the Kazakh WGM Dinara Saduakassova take the sole lead in the tournament just in the nick of time. Check out our illustrated report.

WJCC 10: Kane and Abel - II

The USA's GM Jeffrey Xiong (2633) faced Polish IM GM Nasuta Grzegorz (2442) in the tenth round. He did manage to convert easily and now leads the tournament with a monstrous 8.5/10, a full point ahead of second placed GM Vladislav Artemiev. Check out how it came to pass in our illustrated report.

These are the words of Joel Lautier who was one of Anand's competitors in the 90s. Anybody who follows international politics will tell you that things between the two countries are not always friendly, and here were two of the strongest juniors in the horizon taking on each other. WJCC 08: Xiong beats Aravindh to become sole leader

GM Jeffrey Xiong, the second seed, managed to beat GM Aravindh Chithambaram, the leader of the Indian challenge, in a reasonably resourceful fashion. Xiong won and took the sole lead for the first time in the tournament with 6.5/8. Four players — Nasuta Grzegorz, Xu Yinglun, Maghsoodloo, and Karthikeyan — are in close pursuit on 6.0/8. Wesley So wins Sinquefield, Anand joint second

Vishy Anand played a super solid tournament with eight draws and one win to finish joint second at the Sinquefield Cup 2016. Vishy, who will turn 47 in four months from now is competing on par with guys like So, Nakamura, Caruana, Giri, MVL etc. who are half his age. Wesley So played a great tournament and won the event with a score of +2. We have analysis from rounds eight and nine and also the reason why Anish finished on the last spot in the tournament.

WJCC 07: Karthikeyan loses, allows trio to overtake

In a bitter turn of events for the Indian National Champion GM Murali Karthikeyan, the white pieces did not prove enough as he went down to the second seed, USA's GM Jeffrey Xiong. There were more surprises in store. The third seed Alekseenko lost to Nasuta, while Yinglun beat the top seed Artemiev. Thus, three players — Xiong, Yinglun, and Nasuta — now share the lead with 5.5/7. Life of "tent"ative chess players!

The Dutch Open 2016 was held from the 26th of July to 4th August 2016 in the small town of Dieren in Netherlands. Indian GM Sandipan Chanda won the tournament in style and we will be reporting on it pretty soon. As of now we have a wonderful story sent to us by Sahil Tickoo. He and his friend Vaibhav went to the tournament without any hotel bookings. The result was an adventure of a lifetime! They now share it with you through this entertaining article. 

WJCC 06: Draw day at the top tables

The competition saw a dour day at the top tables as most of the games ended in draws. The top seed and the leader — Artemiev with white and Karthikeyan with black—drew their game. With 5.0/6, GM Murali Karthikeyan of Tamil Nadu continues to lead the tournament. A bunch of players is pursuing the leader Karthikeyan at the second spot with 4.5/6.

Vishy Anand began the Sinquefield Cup with 2.0/3. In the next four rounds he played out four draws against Ding Liren, Wesley So, Anish Giri and Levon Aronian. But none of the games were dull. All of them had something to learn from. WJCC 04+05: Murali Karthikeyan becomes the sole leader

Six players went into the fifth day of play tied at 3.5/4. While both the top two board games by the first and the second seeds ended in a draw, GM Murali Karthikeyan beat German IM Rasmus Svane with the white pieces to become the tournament’s first sole leader with 4.5/5. Karthikeyan has a knack of outperforming others in pressure situations. It remains to be seen how well India’s 2015 National Champion fares in the coming days.

Live games: World Juniors 2016

The World Juniors are currently in progress in India to determine the strongest Junior player in the World. Strong players like Artemiev, Xiong, Wagner, Alekseenko, Chithambaram, Karthikeyan etc. fight it out for the gold medal. In the girl's section we have Saduakassova, Bivol, Bodda and others as the top seed. The 13 round tournament begins every day at 15.00 hours IST, except the last round that starts at 10.00 a.m. You can watch the live games here!

Just a reminder: this very strong chess tournament, with the world's numbers 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9, playing a round robin in Chess Club and Scholastic Center, Saint Louis, USA, will have live coverage and video commentary, right here on our news page. WJCC 03: Artemiev and Narayanan lead the World Juniors in Open

The tournament is expected to become more exciting from this point, as already in the Open, the event has only two co-leaders — Artemiev and Narayanan. Spectators and fan can expect a bloodbath in the coming days as the best young talents in the sport of chess fight to achieve global supremacy at the KIIT University in Bhubaneswar.
