Karnataka State Open: Viani is the champion

Karnataka State Open has a distinction for having the highest prize fund for a state selection tournament in India. 205 players participated in the event to fight for top four spots. Four players will be representing their home state in the upcoming National Challengers Championship which will commence from August 13-23 this year. IA Vasanth BH sends us an illustrated report. How exciting can first round of an open tournament really be? Players with a rating gap of nearly 400 points were pitted against each other at the 10th KIIT International Open 2017. Yet, we had four GMs who were held to a draw and many more IMs joining the casualty list. The biggest upset of the day was definitely the victory of 17-year-old from Kolkata Chandreyee Hajra over three-time national champion Padmini Rout. 10th KIIT International about to begin!

The 10th edition of KIIT International chess festival begins from the 26th of May 2017. 17 grandmasters and 21 International Masters will fight it out in field of 246 players from 12 countries for the first prize of Rs.2,00,000. The Zalakaros Open 2017 has witnessed a hilarious incident in the eighth round. World's youngest IM Praggnanandhaa R. was playing China's Li Bo, when the latter made an illegal move. Unfortunately, Pragg did not notice this and went on to lose. Can he appeal against the game?

Ravi Teja takes it all in Sangli!

Playing his first tournament in India after marriage IM Ravi Teja travelled to Sangli with his wife. Both of them took part in the 50th edition of the Babukaka Shirgaonkar tournament. Ravi claimed the top prize of Rs.1 lakh, while Anusha was the best woman player! Our 12-year-old reporter Avathanshu Bhat was in Sangli and has sent us a report loaded with chess content. The 36th Zalakaros Open is taking place from 18th May to 26th May in the Hotel Karos Spa in Zalakaros, a beautiful little spa town in the Balaton lake region of Hungary. Top seed Richard Rapport has already suffered a shock defeat at the hands of IM Abhimanyu Puranik. Meanwhile, Indian IM Praggnanandhaa R. is playing some sparkling chess. Report.

PM Narendra Modi congratulates Vaishali

Asian Continental Championship has concluded yesterday. India had a fruitful outing as GM Vidit Gujrathi and WIM Vaishali R clinched bronze medals in the classical championship. PM Narendra Modi congratulated Vaishali for her gold medal winning performance in the Blitz championship. A golden day for Indian chess!

Victorious Vaishali and Vidit clinch bronze at Asian Continental

Last round of an important event like Asian Continental 2017 is extremely nerve-wracking. A lot of things are at stake and it is important to keep things under control. Two V's of Indian chess Vaishali and Vidit did that perfectly to secure bronze medals in women and open section respectively. Indians win First Saturday May-2017!

The very first "First Saturday tournament" in Budapest was played in 1987. The idea behind this successful series is simple: make it easier for young players to get round robin norms you need for the title. Since 1987 countless ambitious talents, among them several future chess superstars, have made their norms in Budapest. This time, two Indians won the GM and IM groups.
