Anupam and Om are the National Under 9 Champions

To get a taste of the young talent in India, you should have been at the recently concluded National Under 9 Chess Championship in Gurugram. The tiebreak here was decided by the head to head encounter between the tied players. In the final round, two players who were leading the tournament by a one-point margin had to suffer a bitter defeat and their opponents got ahead of them. This clearly indicates that a new generation of chess players is in the making, which isn't only aggressive but knows very well how to perform under pressure. In the Open group, it was Om Kadam from Maharashtra who clinched the title while among the girls, Anupam M Sreekumar wore the champion's crown. A report.

World Junior 02: Four on a perfect score

Four Indian players have emerged with an unblemished score after two rounds of play at the World Junior Championships in Tarvisio, Italy. While the highest rated Indian in the field, SL Narayanan took things slow and won after 69 moves of play, Murali Karthikeyan played a neat miniature and finished Liam Vrolijk in merely 24 moves. Little Praggna is also among the perfect scorers after his win against IM Nubairshah Shaikh from Mumbai. Historic Agreement: No Hijab at the World Rapid and Blitz 2017

It will be for the first time in the history of any sporting event held in Saudi Arabia that the women will not be required to wear a hijab or an Abaya. This will be witnessed at the King Salman FIDE World Rapid and Blitz 2017 to be held in Riyadh from the 25th to 30th of December 2017. Apart from no hijab, the organizers have enforced a compulsory dress code for the event. The prize money is 350% more than that of the previous editions. Until now citizens of no country have been denied participation for the event. This is all looking quite positive and upbeat for the last major event of 2017.

Vidit and Harika in Tata Steel Challengers

Indians already had a strong representation at the Dutch town of Wijk Aan Zee, where the Tata Steel Festival will be held from 12th to 28th of January, in the form of Anand and Adhiban in the Masters section. Things just got better as we now have Vidit and Harika playing in the Challengers section. Vidit is the top seed and Harika is one out of the two female participants! With four Indians in Wijk Aan Zee we can look forward to a very exciting event! This is the highest number of Indians ever in the history of Tata Steel Festival.

World Juniors 01: Event opens with early shocks

The first round of the World Junior Championship in Italy saw some major upsets. While Kumar Gaurav scored a fine win against the much higher rated GM Gergely Kantor, GM Aravindh Chithambaram suffered a shocking loss to the Serbian FM Pavle Dimic. On board two, Sidhant Mohapatra held the 2606 rated GM Grigory Oparin to a draw. We have a pictorial report.

King Salman FIDE World Rapid and Blitz to be held in Saudi Arabia

On November 9th 2017, FIDE - World Chess Federation announced that under the aegis of the General Sports Authority of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, 2017 King Salman World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from 26th - 30th December 2017. Hikaru Nakamura expressed his thoughts about the host nation and the sanctity of chess through a tweet immediately after the official announcement. We have asked several current and former national champions of our country to share their thoughts on the decision of hosting such a major championship in a country where democracy does not exist and their voice about Nakamura's tweet on the same subject.

Family team championship takes place first time in Kolkata

Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy has been organizing Intra DBCA Chess Tournament since 2006 to encourage kids, increase general interest in chess and spread chess literacy. For the first time, a team championship was organized in an Intra DBCA Tournament but with a twist. The teammate must be directly related to the student. A concept inspired from Abu Dhabi Chess Festival was implemented for the first time in an Intra DBCA tournament. Total 38 teams participated in various combinations from father-son, father-daughter, mother-son, mother-daughter to grandfather-grandson. National Premier 2017 Round 13: "I am the happiest man!"

Those were Lalith Babu's words when asked as to how he felt after winning his first national seniors title. The Andhra boy has had a rough period in his life since 2013. Four years had passed and he hadn't won a single tournament. Winning this National Premier meant a lot for Lalith. Earlier in the day he had agreed to the shortest draw in the tournament - 14 moves. Aravindh, who was jointly leading with him, however slumped to a disastrous loss. As a result Lalith was crowned the Champion with 9.0/13. What a grand finale we have at the National Premier 2017. In the penultimate round Lalith beat S.L. Narayanan with the black pieces - a fantastic feat. Aravindh, on the other hand, powered through time pressure to get the full point against Himanshu Sharma. With both of them on 8.5/12, and one and a half point ahead of the pack, we are sure to have a new National Champion! Who will it be? Your guess is as good as mine. We will have to wait for the games to begin at 10 a.m. on 10th of November. But for now we will take you through all the action that took place in the 12th round. Raja Rithvik and K Priyanka win National Under 17

The reigning National Under 13 Champion, Raja Rithvik R of Telangana and Commonwealth Chess 2017 Under 16 girls champion, K Priyanka of Tamil Nadu have emerged as the champions of Dr N. Mahalingam 28th National Under-17 Chess Championship 2017 in the Open and Girls' category, respectively. Even though both champions tripped once in their run and lost a game each, they managed to overcome the setback and emerged as title winners in their respective age category.
