Commonwealth 2018 Round 3: The fall and rise of Meghna CH

Chess players need to be mentally strong. That's the only way in which they can succeed. A brilliant case of this was showcased at the Commonwealth Championships 2018. Meghna CH is a 19-year-old player from Kerala. She came to Delhi with big hopes of winning a medal in the under-20 section. However, in the 2nd round she lost to higher rated Sakshi Chitlange and in the third round she was beaten by her state mate Abdeen Asna who was rated 1162! Nothing could have been worse for Meghna. What a great gathering of chess players we have at the Leela Ambience Hotel in Delhi. The Commonwealth Chess Championships 2018 kicked off from the 26th of June 2018. A record number of players are taking part in this event. In the mornings you have the age category events, while in the afternoon, the open section begins. Most of the top seeds sailed through, with the exception of the strongest female player in the tournament - Tania Sachdev. In a completely winning position she blundered in a big way and gifted the full point to the opponent. We have a huge report with some excellent pictures by Amruta Mokal.

Indian chess has some brilliant chess players up its fold, right from five-time reigning World Champion to the 12-year-old second youngest GM in the world R. Praggnanandhaa. But today we are going to look at three of our champions who have braved all sorts of odds to come out victorious on the chess board. They playing chess shows not only how great the sport of chess is, but also what gritty, determined and courageous individuals they are. We are talking about the terrific trio of IM Shashikant Kutwal, WIM Jennitha Anto and Samarth Rao who are representing our country at the 18th IPCA World Championships currently taking place in Prague. 

GCT Paris Day 4+5: Nakamura bags the title!

The blitz leg of the Paris Grand Chess ended in the most exciting manner one could have imagined. Wesley So led the event after the blitz, Sergey Karjakin took over after the first day of the blitz, but neither of them won the tournament! It was GM Hikaru Nakamura, who had always been lurking around the winners, who took the title prize scoring four wins on the final day. Indian ace, Viswanathan Anand, finished with a lukewarm sixth place with a combined score (rapid + blitz) of 17/36.

Praggnanandhaa joint first at the Gredine Open, Vaishali scores her second WGM norm!

Usually when a player makes a norm with one round to spare, he more often than not loses the last round. This is because he is happy with his/her achievement and is in a relaxed state of mind. But for little Pragg, becoming the second youngest GM in the history of the game was not enough. He also wanted to win the 4th Gredine Open. He played an excellent game to beat his last round opponent GM Roeland Pruijssers, after the Dutch GM made a mistake in the opening. The other good news for Indian fans was Vaishali making her second WGM norm and gaining 27 Elo points. Illustrated report with game analysis and pictures. 

12 years, 10 months and 13 days - Praggnanandhaa becomes the 2nd youngest GM in the history of chess!

23rd of June 2018 turned out to be a great day for Indian chess fans as R. Praggnanandhaa scored his third and final GM norm at the 4th Gredine Open in Ortisei, Italy. Pragg won his eighth round game against GM Moroni Luca Jr. and scored his GM norm with one round to spare. Pragg, thus became the second youngest GM in the history of the game at the age of 12 years, 10 months and 13 days. Sergey Karjakin and Praggnanandhaa are the only players in the world who have achieved the GM title before the age of 13 years! Muralikrishna Gangaraju - the man who powered chess in Ponnur and created India's National Champion

I created a National Premier Champion from scratch - how many chess coaches can boast of this fact. A very few for sure! One such dedicated coach is Gangaraju Muralikrishna from Ponnur in Andhra Pradesh. He moulded the talent of GM Lalith Babu and made him the player he is now. He also carved an IM from his hometown of Ponnur - Dhulipalla Bala Chandra Prasad. In this article we get to know G. Muralikrishna in more detail, what are his training techniques, how did he work with Lalith and we also interview Dhulipalla Bala Chandra Prasad, who became an IM in 2017.  

GCT Paris Day 3: Anand finishes joint fourth; So leads going into the blitz

Just like in Leuven, Wesley So managed to finish on top of the leaderboard in the rapid section of the Grand Chess Tour in Paris. Scoring 12/18, So is ahead of his nearest rivals, Hikaru Nakamura and Sergey Karjakin, by a one-point margin. Meanwhile, Vishy Anand played some really enterprising chess to finish joint fourth on the leaderboard. He finished with two draws and a loss out of his three games but his games were entertaining and hard-fought, especially the one against Nakamura. We have a report with games and pictures. 

Praggnanandhaa two games away from becoming a grandmaster

In a small town of northern Italy called Ortisei, history is being made. Our super prodigy R. Praggnanandhaa is playing the 4th Gredine Open 2018 and is on 5.5/7. If he plays the last two rounds well he could well make his final GM norm and become the second youngest GM in the history of the game. In this article IM Sagar Shah analyzes one of Pragg's fine win over Aryan Gholami from Iran. We also tell you the score that Pragg requires from the last two rounds to make a GM norm. GCT Paris Day 2: Anand slips to the fifth spot with three straight draws

Viswanathan Anand was co-leading the Paris leg of the Grand Chess Tour after the first day with a nice win in the second round against Vladimir Kramnik. But on day two, the Indian ace was unable to pull out a win while his rivals sped past him in terms of score. However, Anand hasn't lost a game either; he concluded day two with three straight draws. Going into the final day of the rapids, Anand, with a score of 3.5/9, remains a full point behind leader Wesley So. Aronian and Karjakin are also half-a-point ahead of him at 4.0/10.
