The $1m Magnus Carlsen Tour: A new era for chess

The reigning World Champion and World no.1 Magnus Carlsen has taken it upon himself to revolutionize online chess. After the conclusion of Magnus Carlsen Invitational little over a week ago, in a press release Carlsen decided to announce Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour which will be a series of four super tournaments. The Grand Final will be played between each of the winners of the four tournaments. It will be the new "majors" for online chess. The entire tour will have a combined prize fund of $1m which is the highest ever for online chess. One of the best things to have happened to the sport of chess in this lockdown is more and more people taking it up in their free time. One such individual who is a chess lover and is using the sport to make a big difference is the stand-up comedian Samay Raina. Samay won the Comicstaan 2 reality show in August 2019. Although he has a fine career in stand-up comedy, he decided to focus his attention on the game of chess during the lockdown! And he has made a big impact by bringing a lot of casual chess players back to the sport. Apart from his entertaining streams with fellow comedians and top chess players, Samay also indulges in charity with chess. The first edition starring Vishy Anand raised Rs.8,33,000. The second Charity for Chess stream will be LIVE on 14th of May from 5p.m. onwards and will be headlined by stars like Anish Giri, Vidit Gujrathi, Tania Sachdev, Yuzvendra Chahal and also has ChessBase India's Sagar Shah!

Andrew Tang wins Sultan Khan Cup

Penguingm1 (GM Andrew Tang) of USA scored 9.0/10 to win IPS Academy presents Sultan Khan Cup 2020, the strongest ChessBase India Online Blitz event, also having the highest prize fund. Andrew Tang won ₹20000 cash for his efforts. Peruvian GM Jose Eduardo Martinez Alcantara and GM Aryan Chopra of India, both finished at 8.5/10, they were placed second and third respectively according to their tie-break scores. The tournament witnessed the participation of 34 GMs, 35 IMs, 3 WGMs and 10 WIMs from twelve countries across the world including India. Among the women, reigning National Women's Champion IM Bhakti Kulkarni won the first prize, followed by WIM Priyanka Nutakki and WGM R Vaishali. Photo: Andrew's twitter

India's 33rd GM Vishnu Prasanna launched his website on 1st May 2020. The site is rich of various content, one of the main features of the site is 'blog' where Vishnu himself explains various chess themes with illustrative games and diagrams. Vishnu is an accomplished player and a prolific trainer. He has trained second youngest GM in the world D Gukesh, he is training with GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly and he has also worked with GM Adhiban Baskaran as a second for his debut in Wijk aan Zee. Shahil Dey and Aniruddha Potawad win the 2nd Pursue your Chess Scholarship for Rs.75,000

A few days ago, the ‘Pursue your chess’ scholarship of Rs 75000 was announced by the ChessBase India Foundation, aimed at talented chess players held back by financial constraints. The two deserving winners of the scholarship are CM Shahil Dey and Aniruddha Potawad. Both have a fierce chess spirit, and have been going from strength to strength every tournament. However, even the best of talents can get suppressed by things they cannot control. In order to give an impetus to their chess careers, Shahil Dey wins Rs.50,000 and Anirudh Potawad Rs.25,000. Nakamura makes a cameo in the critically acclaimed series Billions

Billions is an award winning and critically acclaimed drama tv series on Showtime Network about power politics in the world of New York high finance. Speed King Super GM Hikaru Nakamura made a cameo as himself in the second episode of the fifth season titled - 'The Chris Rock Test'. Nakamura retweeted a GIF image about his appearance on the show after the show aired on 10th May 2020, early morning 11th May in IST. This is the first appearance by an elite chess player since 2017 on an award winning American network show since Magnus Carlsen was immortalized in The Simpsons where he portrayed himself three years ago. B.S. Shivananda - The Indian Fischer - Part I

Who is the Indian Fischer you might ask? Is it Vishy Anand? Well Anand is now a brand in himself, and has surpassed the American Genius in rating, number of world titles and longevity, so surely not him! Who else then? Well, he is a person who hailed from a remote village in Karnataka, who began playing chess towards the end of his teenage years and became one of the strongest players of Indian chess with a live Elo rating of 2486 in 2006. This is the story of B.S. Shivananda, who faced all the vicissitudes of life to emerge as an inspirational figure in the country. Tanmay Srinath brings forth the inspiring, and at times heart wrenching story of the genius in this three-part series of interviews.

Learn from India no.1, 2 and 3: Vishy, Vidit and Hari

On a single day we witnessed three brilliant games by India no.1,2 and 3! Vishy Anand showcased his top form to beat Teimour Radjabov's favourite King's Indian Defense. Vidit Gujrathi who was looking completely out of sorts in the tournament came back strongly to score a win over Levon Aronian with deep opening preparation and subtle endgame play. Harikrishna's win over Jorge Cori was perhaps the most brutal as the India no.3 showed how the Sveshnikov can be tamed as white. Although India now has no chance of making it to the super finals (top two), these brilliant games are worth watching and learning from. Support the petition for legendary Sultan Khan to be awarded the GM title

FIDE granted the GM title to players like Ossip Bernstein, Ernst Grünfeld, Boris Kostic, Géza Maroczy, Jacques Mieses, Akiba Rubinstein, Friedrich Sämisch, Savielly Tartakower, Milan Vidmar, Carlos Torre and others. A player who was equally strong and one of the best in the world was Sultan Khan. At the heights of his power he was a three-time British Champion, had beaten players like Capablanca, Rubinstein, Yates and also Tartakower in a match. He surely deserved the GM title, but his achievements have been overlooked in the past by FIDE. Through the petition, we ask for your support, so that we could request FIDE to award the GM title to the legendary chess player.

Vishy Anand beats Ian Nepomniachtchi in 17 moves | Online Nations Cup Day 3

The FIDE chess. com online nations cup saw humans trumping the machines (at least the weak ones!) as Vishy Anand unleashed a powerful mating attack against Ian Nepomniachtchi, which the computers were unable to understand for a few minutes! Turns out this was Vishy's preparation not just before the game, but from ten years ago when he was playing a World Championship match! Anand managed to beat Nepo in a mere 17-move miniature. The Indian team however, remains winless at the event as we drew our match against Russia and lost to the USA. China is simply unstoppable at the top with 11/12. A detailed round three report.
