Ian Nepomniachtchi wins Candidates 2022 with a round to spare

Ian Nepomniachtchi won the FIDE Candidates 2022 with a round to spare. This is his second consecutive Candidates triumph. He drew his penultimate round game comfortably against Richard Rapport. He will face Jan-Krzysztof Duda in the final round. However, that result will be a non-factor because no one can equal Nepomniachtchi's score 9/13. Hikaru Nakamura scored the sole victory of the round. He defeated Duda to move to sole second place 7.5/13. Nakamura will face Ding Liren in the final round. A win guarantees the Speed King a sole second place, while a draw should also be enough for the same, as he has better tie-breaks. Final Round 14 starts today at 3 p.m. local time (6:30 p.m. IST). Breaking News: India will field third team in the Open section of 44th Chess Olympiad

Two months after AICF announced the biggest ever Indian squad for 44th Chess Olympiad, AICF makes another major announcement. India will have its third team in the Open section. As per the Olympiad Pairing Rules in the FIDE Handbook, if there is an odd number of participating teams, the organising federation has the right to enter a third team. Yesterday, it was announced that the Open section has 187 teams. Thus, a provision for the third team arose. The India 3 team will comprise - GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly, GM Karthikeyan Murali, GM Sethuraman S P, GM Abhijeet Gupta and GM Abhimanyu Puranik. The Captain of the team will be Tejas Bakre. Serbia Open 2022 R5: Ivic makes a narrow escape against Aditya Mittal

IM Aditya Mittal found himself in a winning position against Serbia no.3 GM Velimir Ivic. However, he missed his opportunity before Ivic could not find a way to make the most out of his. GM Aryan Chopra defeated WGM Narva Mai (EST) to join Adhiban and three more players in the lead 4.5/5. IM Harshavardhan G B scored an impressive win against GM Leon Luke Mendonca. The former had to grind a position in the middlegame, until his opponent erred which he capitalized on. Among the women participants, IM Padmini Rout has made a fantastic start with an unbeaten 4/5. 2nd Athens of the East GM Open R5-7: Aronyak Ghosh emerges sole leader

IM Aronyak Ghosh scored 6.5/7 to emerge as the sole leader at 2nd Athens of the East GM Open 2022. He scored six consecutive wins to gain a full point lead. The 18-year-old drew his seventh round game against GM Alexei Fedorov to maintain his sole lead. GM Tran Tuan Minh (VIE), GM Stupak Kirill and IM Rajesh Vav are trailing by a half point at 6/7 each. Hari Madhavan N B bounced back by winning against GM Vahe Baghdasaryan (ARM) in Round 6 after losing his fifth round game against the tournament leader. Tejas Bakre and Ankit Rajpara relay the Chess Olympiad Torch from Ahmedabad to Daman

The 11th Grandmaster of India, Tejas Bakre received the Chess Olympiad Torch at Ahmedabad, Gujarat and handed it to India's 36th GM Ankit Rajpara. Tejas is the first GM from Gujarat, Ankit is the second GM from his state. Before becoming a GM in 2014, Ankit finished third at Graz Open 2014 in Austria. Gujarat's first Woman International Master Dhyani Dave, latest International Master Manush Shah and the next WIM from the state, WFM Dhyana Patel were also present at Ahmedabad. ChessBase India Originals Death Match - Anish Giri vs Vidit Gujrathi

On 26th of July 2022, the chess world will be treated to a unique, one of its kind chess show - the ChessBase India Originals Death Match between Anish Giri and Vidit Gujrathi. Anish Giri is world no.10 and Dutch no.1. Vidit Gujrathi is India no.3 and world no.28. The Death match between them will be held at the Dublin Square in the Phoenix Marketcity, Mumbai. What is the format of the match, what is the prize money, who are the hosts and commentators of the show, are there any exhibition matches? All of this is mentioned in the article. Serbia Open 2022 R4: Adhiban and Emre Can share the lead

GM B Adhiban seems to be getting back in his form at Serbia Open 2022 Masters. He won the first four games. Currently, he shares the lead with GM Emre Can (TUR) 4/4. They will face each other in the fifth round. GM Aryan Chopra, IM Aditya Mittal and CM Kushagra Mohan are on their heels at 3.5/4. Aditya grinded a drawn rook endgame against IM Arystanbek Urazayev (KAZ). Aryan annihilated the reigning World Women's Blitz champion, IM Bibisara Assaubayeva (KAZ). Candidates 2022 R12: Radjabov dashes Ding Liren's hopes

Ian Nepomniachtchi made a quick draw with Hikaru Nakamura to stretch his lead by two points. Teimour Radjabov brought Ding Liren's winning streak to a screeching halt. Thus, the World no.2's chances of reducing the gap is slim to none. Both Nakamura and Ding Liren are now at 6.5/12. They will face each other in the final round. So, only one of them has a mathematical chance to match the leader's score, provided Nepomniachtchi loses the last two games. GM B Adhiban started the tournament with three consecutive wins at Serbia Open 2022 Masters. IM Harikrishnan A Ra arguably scored the most spectacular win of the round. He defeated Serbia no.1 GM Aleksandar Indjic convincingly. The 20-year-old got a winning position within the first 20 moves of the game. FM Ram Aravind L N scored a nice victory against IM Sugar Gan-Erdene (MGL). The former showed a fantastic understanding of the position. 2nd Athens of the East GM Open R1-4: Hari Madhavan scores an incredible win against Boris Savchenko

18-year-old Hari Madhavan N B played some fantastic chess to beat the top seed, GM Boris Savchenko. This is certainly a big win for Hari as Boris has won two consecutive tournaments - 3rd Vizag GM Open and then 13th Chennai GM Open 2022. The highest rated untitled player of the event, is now one of the six leaders. GM Stupak Kirill, GM Nguyen Duc Hoa, GM Karthikeyan P, IM Aronyak Ghosh and IM Nitin S are the remaining five players at 4/4. 13-year-old, 132nd seeded Shreyas Seshadri Nellore made an impressive start 3.5/4. Candidates 2022 R11: Hyperbullet chess derails Firouzja

The perennial question, whether hyperbullet chess helps one during a tournament or not, was answered yesterday. It does not. World no.3 Alireza Firouzja played 250 Hyperbullet games (30 seconds each) with GM Daniel Naroditsky after suffering a loss against Hikaru Nakamura in Round 11. Whether that was a lash out of a previous round loss or a preparation is anybody's guess. He played aggressively against Nepomniachtchi and it did not work out. The former World Championship Challenger is looking strong to become the no.1 contender again. He is currently at 8/11, 1.5 points ahead of Ding Liren 6.5/11. Shardul and Iniyan receive the Chess Olympiad Torch at Jaipur

The 42nd Grandmaster of India, Shardul Gagare received the Chess Olympiad Torch at Jaipur, Rajasthan and handed it to India's 61st GM Iniyan P. Shardul has won Gold and Bronze in Asian Youth events and Silver in Commonwealth Under-20. He has won the Riga Technical University Blitz Open 2019 and secured third place in Abu Dhabi Blitz Festival 2017. Iniyan has won 41st National Sub-Junior (Under-15), Gold in Commonwealth Under-14 and Under-18, Runner-up in 41st Barbera del Valles GM Open and Thailand Chess Festival 2019. CM Kushagra Mohan and WIM Sakshi Chitlange showed some fine endgame knowledge in Round 2 of Serbia Open 2022 Masters. Both of them are among Indian players at 2/2. GM B Adhiban, GM Abhimanyu Puranik, IM Padmini Rout, IM Anuj Shrivatri, IM P Shyam Nikhil and IM Aditya S Samant are the remaining Indians who have made a 100% start. Candidates 2022 R10: Nakamura vanquishes Firouzja

Hikaru Nakamura lived up to his prediction of beating Firouzja at the Candidates 2022. He might have said it nonchalantly, however, one cannot discount the fact that he won the FIDE Grand Prix too. Ding Liren and Jan-Krzysztof Duda were the other two victors of the round. The World no.2 defeated Rapport in his own game by creating imbalance and playing creatively. Caruana's ambitious approach against the FIDE World Cup 2021 winner, did not turn out the way he wanted. Duda's brave play earned him a full point convincingly. Nepomniachtchi now has a 1.5 point lead 7/10, over Caruana, Nakamura and Ding Liren at 5.5/10 each.
