Vishy Anand made a fantastic start at Levitov Chess Week 2023. He scored an impressive 3.5/5 on the first day, trailing the sole leader Levon Aronian (USA) by a half point. The maestro scored his first win of the event in a superb way against Wesley So (USA) in the third round. First he sacrificed his knight, then rook and finally the queen. Although the queen sacrifice was not a true sacrifice because he was getting it back by promoting another. Nevertheless, the win is one for the future chess books for sure. Soham Bhattacharyya dominates Tata Steel Chess Festival 2023 Under-19 Rapid

Soham Bhattacharyya scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win Tata Steel Chess Festival 2023 All Bengal Under-19 Rapid. He finished a full point ahead of the field. Arpan Das, top seed of the tournament - IM Shahil Dey and second seeded FM Sourath Biswas scored 7.5/9. They were placed second to fourth respectively according to tie-breaks. Top three prizes were ₹5000 + trophy, ₹3000 and ₹2000 each respectively. The teenager had also secured a second runner-up place finish at the Blitz Open, two days prior to this event. Soham scored his maiden IM-norm at Serbia Masters 2023 in July. His present Classical Elo rating is 2477. Anwesh Upadhyaya wins Akshayakalpa Fiesta Rapid Rating Open 2023

Dr. IM Anwesh Upadhyaya and Vignesh B scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 each at Akshayakalpa Fiesta Rapid Rating Open 2023. Anwesh won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. Vignesh was placed second. They did not face each other. Apoorv Kamble, Sathvik Adiga, Gugan G and Madhesh Kumar S scored 8/9. They were adjudged third to sixth respectively. 11-year-old Rosh Jain won the Blitz Open 8/9. Team Magizhchi comprising IM C R G Krishna and WGM Srija Seshadri scored 11/12 to win the Mixed Doubles event. The total cash prize fund for the entire fiesta was ₹300000. The top three prizes in Rapid were ₹25000 + trophy, ₹20000 and ₹18000, for Blitz it was ₹5000, ₹4500 and ₹4000 each, for Mixed Doubles they were ₹10000, ₹8000 and ₹7000 each. It was truly a chess fiesta as the Rapid Rating Open event witnessed 741 players and the combined participation in the entire fiesta was 1018. Swapnil Dhopade dominates 7th Negombo International Chess Festival 2023

GM Swapnil Dhopade scored an unbeaten 9.5/10 to win 7th Negombo International Chess Festival Rating Open 2023. He finished a full point ahead of the field. S D Nadev Insara (SRI) scored 8.5/10 to secure second place. R K T Dissanayake (SRI) edged past nine other players to be placed third scoring 8/10. The total prize fund of the tournament was about LKR 900000. The top three prizes in the Classical event were LKR 100000, 80000 and 40000 along with a trophy and medal each. Sri Lanka no.2 IM L M S T De Silva scored 8.5/9 to win the Blitz event. The no.1 of Sri Lanka, FM Ranindu Dilshan Liyanage also scored 8.5/9 to share first place. CM A A C B Amarasinghe (SRI) finished third 7.5/9. The top three prizes in Blitz were LKR 30000, 20000 and 15000 along with a trophy and medal each.This is Swapnil's first individual tournament triumph since June 2017. 36th National Under-7 Open and Girls Championships 2023 preview

The 36th edition of National Under-7 Open and Girls Chess Championships 2023 starts tomorrow. A total of 366 players, 243 in the Open and 123 in the Girls category are slated to take part. Divith Reddy Adulla (TEL) and Anupriya Yadav (UP) are going to be the top seeds in their respective Open and Girls section as of now. Both of them are the reigning State champions of their respective age group. This is a special event for many children as it will be their first National championship/major event of their life. They will create memories both on and off the board. The total prize fund of the tournament is ₹500000, ₹250000 each in Open and Girls section. The top three prizes are ₹50000, ₹36000 and ₹30000. IM Anup Deshmukh will be the trainer for 3rd ChessBase India Training Camp

After two successful editions of ChessBasae India Training Camp, the third one will take place from 10th to 14th October 2023. This time the trainer will be the revered Indian coach, IM Anup Deshmukh. The training camp will be for a total of five days, in which training will be given in two parts every day. This time also, there will be space for only 12 players in the camp, out of which two places have been reserved for players from Madhya Pradesh. Khelo Chess India Tournament will also be organized at the end of the camp. Players up to FIDE rated 2200 can participate in the camp. At present, three places have been filled, so players can apply for the remaining nine places. Read this article to know more.

Asian Amateur 2023: Kumaresh clinches Gold, Silver for Sham in U2000

18-year-old Kumaresh A scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win Gold at Asian Amateur Championship in Under-2000 Men category. He finished a full point ahead of the field. 19-year-old Sham R scored 7.5/9 to secure Silver. Anshu Kr. Pathak scored 6/9 to secure Bronze in the Under-1700 Men category. The total prize fund of the tournament was US$ 7500. The top three prizes in U2000 Men were $1200, $800 and $500 each. For U1700 Men, they were $800, $500 and $300. Sanket Chakravarty becomes the latest International Master of India

Sanket Chakravarty scored three IM-norms and crossed 2400 in a little over 4.5 months to become India's latest International Master. The 18-year-old from Kolkata earned his maiden IM-norm at Fagernes GM Open 2023 in April. Exactly two months later, he earned his second IM-norm at 2nd Maharashtra GM Open 2023. The teenager got a published rating of 2411 in July 2023 FIDE Rating list. At 29th Abu Dhabi Masters 2023, he earned his final IM-norm to become an IM. From January this year, Sanket started training with one of the most successful chess coaches of the world, GM Aleksander Goloshchapov (UKR). Vitaly Sivuk wins 18th IGB Dato' Arthur Tan Malaysian Open 2023, Mitrabha Guha second

GM Vitaly Sivuk (SWE), GM Mitrabha Guha, IM Aditya Bagus Arfan (INA) and GM Deepan Chakkravarthy scored 7/9 each. Sivuk won 18th IGB Dato' Arthur Tan Malaysian Open 2023 due to better tie-breaks. The remaining three were placed second to fourth respectively. Mitrabha was the sole leader heading into the last round. Deepan defeated him and Sivuk drew against GM Darwin Laylo (PHI). The top three prizes were US$ 3500, 2000 and 1000 along with a medal each respectively. The tournament was organized by DAT Chess Centre from 28th August to 3rd September 2023 at Cititel Midvalley in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. VISA issues stop 5 Indian players from participating in the World Junior Championships 2023

The World Junior Chess Championships are set to take place at Mexico City, Mexico from 20th September - 2nd October 2023. As expected, a large number of Indian players were qualified to take part in the event. But the Indian players have encountered an unexpected problem in their travels to this prestigious event. 5 of the Indian players - namely Vrashank Chauhan, Arun Kataria, Bhagyashree Patil, GM Prraneeth Vuppala and Femil Chelladurai were not granted with VISA to take part in this event. In this article, we share their statements and try to shed light on the issues faced by the players. 

School boy Hari Ganesh lifts 21st Adyar Times Rating Open 2023 Trophy

15-year-old Hari Ganesh T and FM Vinoth Kumar M scored an unbeaten 7.5/8 at 21st Adyar Times Rating Open 2023. The teenager won the tournament due to better tie-breaks and Vinoth secured second place. Six players - Kavishvaran P, Malla Nooka Raju, Selvamurugan B, Sridhar C S, Raghav V and IM Ramnathan Balasubramaniam scored 7/8 each. Kavishvaran was adjudged third among them. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹250000. The top three prizes were ₹35000 + trophy, ₹25000 and ₹15000 each respectively. This is Hari's first Rating and overall second tournament triumph of his career. His first tournament victory happened earlier this year when he won Changalpattu District Under-17 Boys Tournament 2023. Praggnanandhaa overpowers Cheparinov and Vitiugov, now World no.16

India no.3 GM R Praggnanandhaa defeated GM Ivan Cheparinov (Magic Extremadura) and GM Nikita Vitiugov (C A Jaime Casas de Monzon) to become World no.16 in the live ratings. Praggnanandhaa is playing for the defending champion team, C A Solvay which won the Spanish Team Championship Honor Division last year. India no.1 GM D Gukesh is the only other Indian in his team. Currently, Gukesh is playing in Armageddon Championship Series 2023 Grand Finale. So he is yet to join the team. GM Raunak Sadhwani and GM S L Narayanan are playing for the same team MyInvestor Casablanca. Raunak made a perfect 2/2 start like Praggnanandhaa. Can C A Solvay win it again for the second consecutive year? We will know in the next few days. Arpita Mukherjee wins Tata Steel Chess Festival 2023 Women Rapid

WIM Arpita Mukherjee and Sinthia Sarkar scored 7/8 each at Tata Steel Chess Festival 2023 All India Women Rapid. The top seed of the event, Arpita won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Sinthia secured second place. The defending champion, WCM Bristy Mukherjee scored sole 6.5/8 to finish third. Top three prizes were ₹20000 + trophy, ₹15000 and ₹10000 each respectively. This was Arpita's second tournament triumph of the year. Earlier this year, she won 20th National Team Women 2023. A super talent spotted! 7-year-old Advitiya from Meghalaya

India is a land of amazing talents in chess. And the talents are sprouting from different corners of the country. Meet 2016-born 7-year-old Advitiya AG, who lives in Shillong, Meghalaya. The boy became the under-12 state champion when he was just 5 years old. Currently, he has a rating of 1182. IM Sagar Shah speaks with Advitiya and asks him some questions based on the different positions he has selected, while Advitiya has his own list of questions he wants to ask IM Sagar Shah. Advitiya is soon to play in the under-7 nationals happening in Kolkata. If groomed well, this boy could very well become a future GM of India and perhaps the first from Meghalaya!
