24th Dubai Open R4: Raunak and Sethuraman join Aronyak in a five-way lead

The top board clash between IM Aronyak Ghosh and GM Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus (TUR) ended in a draw. GM Raunak Sadhwani and GM Sethuraman S P scored wins over IM Oliver Dimakiling (PHI) and GM Evgenios Ioannidis (GRE) respectively to join the lead. Aronyak, Raunak, Sethurama, Yagiz and GM Mahammad Muradli (AZE) are the five players at 3.5/4 at 24th Dubai Open 2024. Sethuraman's win was not so smooth. His Greek opponent had a tough to spot defence in the sharp double rook and bishop vs queen and bishop endgame. WIM Srishti Pandey defeated Taksh Sharma to maintain her perfect score 4/4 in Category B. She will face her coleader Yousef A Alhassadi (LBA) in the fifth round. Norway Chess Women 2024 R2: Vaishali traps Humpy's queen at the center of the board

R Vaishali scored her first Classical win over Koneru Humpy in Norway Chess Women 2024 Round 2. Humpy had a slight edge in the middlegame. However, a couple of incorrect pawn pushes allowed her opponent to get back in the game. A rook swing resulted in Humpy's queen getting trapped at the center of the board. Thus, Vaishali scored the first three points of the event, combining both Open and Women. Tingjie Lei (CHN) and Wenjun Ju (CHN) won Armageddon games against Pia Cramling (SWE) and Anna Muzychuk (UKR). Both Wenjun and Tingjie are trailing Vaishali by a full point at 3/6 each. 12th Norway Chess R2: Magnus humbles Hikaru in Armageddon

The second round of 12th Norway Chess 2024 also witnessed three Armageddon. Magnus Carlsen (NOR) got the better of Hikaru Nakamura (USA) in Armageddon. The latter decided to play actively and not defend a pawn. He lost two more pawns after that and the game. Alireza Firouzja (FRA) was determined to beat Fabiano Caruana (USA). It was evident from the way he started the Classical battle. In Armageddon, despite getting the upperhand, Caruana misplayed, made an incorrect exchange sacrifice and allowed his opponent to get back in the game. A few mistakes later, he lost the game. Ding Liren (CHN) is slowly getting back to his old form. In the Armageddon, he showed his opponent, R Praggnanandhaa, why he is the world champion. IM Aronyak Ghosh stunned Turkey no.4 GM Vahap Sanal to score a hat-trick at 24th Dubai Open 2024 Category A (>2300). The only other player at 3/3 in this category is Turkey's youngest GM Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus. The second seeded GM Raunak Sadhwani and GM Sethuraman S P are at 2.5/3 each. Total 69 players including 24 GMs, 27 IMs and 3 WGMs are taking part in Category A. The average rating is 2429. That should give you an inkling about the strength of the tournament. The first round of the inaugural Norway Chess Women 2024 also witnessed three Armageddons, just like the Open section. R Vaishali drew her first Classical rated game against the reigning Women's World Champion - Wenjun Ju (CHN). However, she lost Armageddon. Koneru Humpy drew both her Classical and Armageddon games against Pia Cramling (SWE). Humpy having the black pieces, allowed her to win the match. Anna Muzychuk (UKR) drew the Classical against Tingjie Lei (CHN). However, she lost Armageddon, resulting in the Chinese winning the match. 12th Norway Chess R1: Praggnanandhaa scores in a must-win Armageddon against Firouzja

The first round of 12th Norway Chess 2024 witnessed three Armageddons. The Classical battle between the World champion - Ding Liren (CHN) and World no.1 - Magnus Carlsen (NOR) ended in a 14-move draw. The Armageddon also ended in a draw. However, Magnus having the black pieces, Armageddon rules worked in his favor. Thus, he won the match. R Praggnanandhaa won the must-win Armageddon against Alireza Firouzja (FRA) after their Classical game ended in a draw. This was the first time Praggnanandhaa defeated Firouzja in an over-the-board tournament game. Hikaru Nakamura (USA) defeated his compatriot Fabiano Caruana (USA) in Armageddon with the black pieces. Harikrishnan A Ra wins 3rd Mikis Theodorakis Open 2024

IM Harikrishnan A Ra, GM Stamatis Kourkoulos-Arditis (GRE) and IM Evaggelos Patrelakis (GRE) scored 7.5/9 each at 3rd Mikis Theodorakis Open 2024. Harikrishnan won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Stamatis and Evaggelos secured second and third place respectively. Both Greek podium finishers remained undefeated. The total prize fund of the tournament was €4100. The top three prizes were €1000, €600 and €400 along with a trophy each respectively. The seven-day nine-round tournament was organized by Chania Chess Academy, A C C "Mikis Theodorakis", Region of Chania, Municipality of Chania, Greek Chess Federation at KAM Center of Mediterranean Architecture in Chania, Greece from 6th to 12th May 2024. This is Harikrishna's fourth rating tournament triumph of the year.

The 12th edition of Norway Chess starts today, Monday 27th May 2024. It will go on till Friday 7th June. For the first time, the tournament is introducing a Women's event with an equal number of players, rounds, same format at the same playing hall. The six-player double round-robin, world's strongest tournament will be played in both Open and Women's event. Each draw will be resolved by Armaggedon. Both reigning World Champions - Ding Liren (CHN) and Wenjun Ju (CHN) will be seen in action along with World no.1 - Magnus Carlsen (NOR). Round 1 starts today from 5 p.m. CET, 8:30 p.m. IST. Axel Martin (FRA) and Nathan Summerville (JPN) scored 4.5/5 each at Golden Week Open 2024. Axel won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Nathan was placed second. Shun Tokuni (JPN), Pei-Ti Wu (TPE) and Kei Sugita (JPN) scored 4/5 each. They were placed third to fifth respectively. In the Group A (Below 1700) section, Toby Curtis scored a perfect 5/5 to become the champion. Murugappan N, Yukihiko Yoshii (JPN), Kantaro Kohara (JPN) and Jie-Xin Lu (TPE) scored 3.5/5 each. Mitrabha Guha triumphs at 55th Late Shri Babukaka Shirgaokar Rapid Rating Open 2024

GM Mitrabha Guha won his third tournament in two days. Mitrabha along with GM Venkatesh M R, IM Sammed Jaykumar Shete and IM Ritviz Parab scored 8/9 each. Top seed and the reigning Commonwealth Gold medalist, Mitrabha became the champion. The remaining three were placed second to fourth respectively according to tie-breaks. Only Mitrabha and Venkatesh remained undefeated. Their final round clash against each other ended in a draw. The total prize fund was ₹500000. The top three prizes were ₹60000, ₹40000 and ₹25000 along with a trophy each. The champion also received a Late Dr. V N Desai Rolling Silver Trophy. The one-day rating tournament was organized by Nutan Buddhibal Mandal, Coordinated by JK's Excellence Chess Academy at Abhiruchi Mall in Pune, Maharashtra on 12th May 2024. IM Hari Madhavan N B scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 8th BBCF Rapid Rating Open 2024. IM Praveen Kumar C, IM S Rohith Krishna and Vignesh B scored 8/9 each. They secured second, third and fourth place respectively. The top three finishers remained undefeated. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹300000. The top three prizes were ₹30000, ₹20000 and ₹12000 along with a trophy each. The two-day rating tournament was organized by Brains Behind Chess Foundation at KRM Public School in Chennai, Tamil Nadu on 12th May 2024. Kumar Gaurav, WIM Tejaswini Sagar and CM Amarasinghe A A C B scored 8/9 each at 6th SSC Rating Open 2024. Kumar became champion due to better tie-breaks, Tejaswini second and Amarasinghe third overall. Both Kumar and Tejaswini remained undefeated. They drew their penultimate round battle against each other. In the Blitz Rating Open, Nikhil M scored an unbeaten 7.5/8 to become the champion. Pesandu Rashmitha Liyanage and Sivathanujan S scored 7/8 each to be placed second and third respectively. The total prize fund in combining all events were LKR 1.6 Million. The top three prizes in Classical were LKR 120000, 80000 and 50000 along with a trophy and medal each, for Blitz it was LKR 15000, 10000 and 7000. GM Mitrabha Guha dominated 4th Aavhan Rapid Rating and Blitz Open 2024. He scored 8.5/9 each in both events and finished a half point ahead of the field to become a clear champion. Five players - Pushkar Dere, FM Suyog Wagh, CM Snehal Bhosale, Arun Kataria and Arpan Das scored 8/9 each. They were placed second to sixth respectively according to tie-breaks. In the Blitz Open, four players - Suyog, Paras Dilip Bhoir, Ram Vishal Parab and FM Gaurang Bagwe scored 8/9 each. They secured second to fifth place respectively. The total prize fund in the Rapid Rating and Blitz Open were ₹200000 and ₹20000. The top three prizes in Rapid were ₹30000, ₹20000 and ₹16000 along with a trophy each, for Blitz it was ₹4000, ₹3000 and ₹2000.
