Kaustuv Kundu conquers 14th Chess for Youth 2024

IM Kaustuv Kundu scored an unbeaten 6.5/7 to win Century Ply presents 14th Chess for Youth 2023 Premier (Under-25) section. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. Sagnik Dutta and top seed, GM Koustav Chatterjee scored 6/7 each. They secured second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund for the Premier section was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹50000 + trophy, ₹30000 and ₹20000 each respectively. This is Kaustuv's fourth tournament triumph of the year. The tournament was supposed to conclude on 27th May 2024. However, due to the intense and deathly presence of tropical cyclone Remal, the organizers were forced to postpone the final day of action to 29th May when it concluded. FIDE Arbiter Unni Krishnan dominates 33rd CUSAT Rating Open 2024

It is not every day one get to witness an arbiter winning a tournament. FIDE Arbiter Unni Krishnan M A who is also the Managing Director of International School of Chess won 33rd CUSAT Rating Open 2024. He scored an unbeaten 7.5/8 and finished a half point ahead of the field. Five players - Ajjesh J R, Balkishan A, Arul Anandh S P K, Praveen K B and Unas K A scored 7/8 each. They secured second to sixth place according to tie-breaks. Apart from Balkishan and Praveen, the remaining in top six remained undefeated. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹300000. The top three prizes were ₹30000, ₹25000 and ₹20000 along with a trophy each. The four-day eight round rating tournament was organized by Department of Physical Education CUSAT from 27th to 30th May at CUSAT Campus in Kochi, Kerala. This is Unni Krishnan's first rating tournament triumph of the year.

Gukesh and Praggnanandhaa set to square off World's best at Superbet Chess Classic 2024

The second event of the Grand Chess Tour 2024 season is Superbet Chess Classic. D Gukesh and R Praggnanandhaa are the two Indians in the lineup. They will face Fabiano Caruana (USA), Ian Nepomniachtchi, Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB), Wesley So (USA), Anish Giri (NED), Alireza Firouzja (FRA), Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA) and Bogdan-Daniel Deac (ROU). 14 youngsters receive laptops through the ChessBase India YouTube members program

Laptops have become integral parts of the life of any improving chess player. A robust laptop that works without hanging definitely leads to substantial improvement for a young talent. It was with this thought in mind that we launched the ChessBase India YouTube Memberships Laptop initiative. The total amount ChessBase India had collected via its YouTube memberships in the last two years (Rs.13.6 lakh) was used to sponsor a Lenovo Yoga Slim laptop (worth Rs.1 lakh) to 14 youngsters. Brunth Sundar Nitish wins Norway Open 2024

Brunth Sundar Nitish scored 6.5/9 to win Norway Chess Open Elo Group 2024. Marcin Zielinski (POL) scored 6.5/9 to secure second place. However, prize money is shared between the same scoring players as per tournament rules. Alina Shehzad (NOR) edged past five more players on tie-breaks to finish third. Despite a rough start 1.5/4, Brunth made a fantastic comeback by winning his last five games in-a-row to become the champion. IM Svyatoslav Bazakutsa (UKR) won the GM group scoring 7/9. The top three prizes in Elo group were €400, €250 and €150 each. The seven-day nine round rating tournament was organized by IA IO CM Hans Olav Lahlum (NOR) from 24th to 30th May at Clarion Hotel Energy in Stavanger, Norway. Anwesh Upadhyaya dominates 40th Turm Open 2024

IM Anwesh Upadhyaya scored an unbeaten 6/7 to win 40th Turm (Tower) Open Group A (>1700) 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. FM FI Bernhard Stillger (GER) scored sole 5.5/7 to secure second place. He also remained undefeated. Eight players scored 5/7 each. Out of them CM Maurice Gulatz (GER) was placed third due to better tie-break scores. The top three prizes in Open A were €600, €400 and €250 along with a trophy each. The four-day seven round rating tournament was organized by LSV/Turm Lippstadt from 30th May to 2nd June at Cafeteria at the Dusternweg school center, in Lippstadt, Germany. Chiranjit Manna wins a double at Chess Track 5th Classical and 31st Blitz Below 2000 Rating 2024

Chiranjit Manna and Sarwar Hossain Ullash (BAN) scored 4/5 each at Chess Track 5th Classical Below 2000 Rating Tournament 2024. Chiranjit won the tournament as he defeated Sarwar in the penultimate round. Jewel Khan (BAN) scored 3.5/5 to finish third. Chiranjit also won Chess Track 34th Blitz Below 2000 Rating Tournament scoring 6/7 and finishing a full point ahead of the rest. Rayan Rashid Mugdho (BAN) and Kazi Saiyf (BAN) scored 5/7 each to be placed second and third respectively according to tie-breaks. Both rating tournaments were organized by Mohammad Murad Hossain at Chess Track in Dhaka, Bangladesh from 31st May to 1st June 2024, Blitz was held only on 31st. These two are Chiranjit's second and third rating tournament triumph of the year. CM Michal Mazurkiewicz (POL) scored an unbeaten 7/9 to win 13th Salento Open Masters (>=1900) 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the field. FM R Ashwath and IM Renier Castellanos Rodriguez (ESP) scored 6.5/9 each. They secured second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund combining all four events was €5000, Masters category had €2950. The top three prizes were €1000, €600 and €400 along with a trophy each respectively. The eight-day nine-round rating tournament was organized by Chess Projects ASD at Caroli Hotels Gallipoli in Gallipoli, Italy from 25th May to 1st June 2024. Arjun Erigaisi: Missing FIDE Candidates Was Tough, But I Moved On

Although the selection of three Indian players in this year's FIDE Candidates Tournament was a significant event in itself, there was a certain sadness in everyone's hearts as Arjun Erigaisi, despite coming close to qualifying multiple times, could not secure a spot. However, Arjun used this setback as motivation and today, he has become the number one player in India and currently ranks fourth in the world. In an exclusive interview with ChessBase India Hindi's Head Niklesh Jain, Arjun Erigaisi discussed missing out on the FIDE Candidates, his future goals, recent performances, and upcoming tournaments. Currently ranked fourth in the world, Erigaisi spoke openly about the challenges and successes of his chess journey, including the disappointment of not qualifying for the FIDE Candidates and his ambition to become the world champion one day. Zhongyi Tan convincingly clinches 4th Cairns Cup, Harika shares third place

GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN) made a quick 19-move draw against GM Alexandra Kosteniuk (SUI) to win 4th Cairns Cup 2024. Since a draw was enough for her to finish clear first, there was no point in risking it. The FIDE Women's Candidates 2024 winner scored an unbeaten 6/9 and finished a half point ahead of the field. GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR) scored her second consecutive win of the event. She defeated IM Alice Lee (USA) in the final round to secure a clear second place 5.5/9. This is also her consecutive second place after the inaugural Norway Chess Women 2024. Four players - Kosteniuk, GM Harika Dronavalli, GM Nana Dzagnidze (GEO), and GM Mariya Muzychuk (UKR) scored 5/9 each. They shared third place. Harika also remained undefeated. Badrinath wins 1st Jaipur Rating Open 2024

Badrinath S, Arpan Das and Ram Vishal Parab scored 8/9 each at 1st Jaipur Rating Open 2024. Badrinath won the tournament due to better tie-break score, Arpan and Ram Vishal were placed second and third. The total prize fund was ₹500000. The top three prizes were ₹75000, ₹45000 and ₹30000 along with a trophy each respectively. The five-day nine-round rating tournament was organized by Food for Needy in association with Jaipur District Chess Association at Hotel Amar Palace in Jaipur, Rajasthan from 29th May to 2nd June 2024. This is Badrinath's first rating tournament triumph of the year. Over 3500 players participate in Vietnam National Youth Championship 2024

This most important chess competition in Vietnam is the National Youth Chess Championship. Every year the many provinces, major cities, and clubs send their best young talent. In 2024, this was as many as 53 bringing a total of 3597 players to play in the categories U-6, U-7, U-8, U-9, U-10, and then U-11, U-13, U-15, U-17 and U-20 in Bac Giang, Vietnam from 24th May to 3rd June 2024. 4th Cairns Cup R7-8: Anna Muzychuk's win over Kosteniuk helps Zhongyi Tan extend her sole lead

GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN) extended her sole lead to 5.5/8 at 4th Cairns Cup 2024. GM Anna Muzychuk's (UKR) first and crucial win over GM Alexandra Kosteniuk (SUI) in the penultimate round, assisted Zhongyi to gain a full point gap. It means Zhongyi just needs a draw against Kosteniuk in the final round to become the champion. It goes without saying that the tournament is far from over as Kosteniuk has played seven decisive games out of eight. GM Harika Dronavalli survived a scare against Anna in the seventh round. She managed to salvage a half point by going for a perpetual check. In the penultimate round, Harika had a solid draw with the tournament leader, Zhongyi. Tata Steel 4th All India Chess Tournament for specially abled Chess players starts on 24th June

The Tata Steel 4th All India FIDE Rated Specially abled Chess Championship 2024 is taking place in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand this year! The event will run from 24th-28th June at the JRD Tata Sports Complex. This will be a 9-round classical tournament with India's best specially abled chess players taking part! Samarth J Rao won the 3rd edition of this tournament back in 2022. A total of 64 players are taking part in the tournament from various states. The tournament is organized by Tata Steel Limited and Tata Steel Foundation, under the aegis of Chess Federation for physically disabled. We will be covering this tournament live from the venue!
