Savitha Shri B is the 13th Indian female to become an International Master

WGM Savitha Shri B became the 12th Indian woman to earn the International Master. The 16-year-old crossed the 2400 rating barrier when she had a 2435 published rating list in September 2022. She secured her final WGM and first IM-norm at Fagernes GM Open 2023. In less than two months, she scored her second IM-norm again in Norway at Norway Chess Open 2023. A year a less than a month later, she secured her final IM-norm at 40th Andorra Open 2024. Thus, she became India's latest IM on 28th July in Andorra. The former Asian Junior Girls Gold medalist and youngest World Rapid Women Bronze medal winner, Savitha Shri is definitely going to aim for the highest title - Grandmaster. Shahil Dey wins 17th Plancoët Open 2024

IM Shahil Dey, IM Egor Bogdanov (UKR), IM Fabien Guilleux (FRA) and GM Radoslav Dimitrov scored 7/9 each at 17th Plancoët Open A (>1800) 2024. Shahil won the tournament on tie-breaks. The remaining three were placed second to fourth respectively. Top two remained undefeated. Shahil drew with both runners-up. The teenager earned his second GM-norm. The total prize fund of Open A was €6000. The top three prizes were €1200 + trophy, €900 and €600 each. The seven-day nine round Rating Open tournament was organized by Emeraude Echecs at Salle Omnisport de Plancoet in Plancoet, France from 13th to 19th July 2024. Srihari L superb at 1st Unicorn Rating Open 2024

IM Srihari L scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win 1st Unicorn Rating Open 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Four players - IM Vikramaditya Kulkarni, Nithin Babu, IM Dinesh Kumar Sharma and Bhaavan Kolla scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed second to fifth according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹1000000. The top three prizes were ₹100000, ₹70000 and ₹40000 along with a trophy each respectively. The five-day nine round rating tournament was organized by Unicorn Chess Academy at Technocrats Group of Institutions in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh from 13th to 17th July 2024. The WACA celebrations 2024

On the 23rd of May, 2024, The city of Bengaluru witnessed one of the most awaited events as the WestBridge Anand Chess Academy (WACA) held a grand celebration at the Good Shepherd Auditorium. With over 800 people attending, the event was a showcase of talent and inspiration. The highlight of the evening was the simul featuring Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand, along with prodigies Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa, Vaishali, and WACA mentor and trainer Sandipan, who took on 15 of Bangalore's finest young players.The main event of the evening, the simul, had the WACA team facing 15 young talents, each with their own potential. Among these young talents, Apoorv Kamble, a 15-year-old, won against the WACA Team. This remarkable achievement highlights the promising future of Indian chess and the immense potential of young players. Let's cover more about what happened in the event.

JDCA invites trainers to teach in Jaffna, Sri Lanka

Jaffna District Chess Association invites trainers having the rating above 2200, or IM and GMs. The trainers will be given Air tickets from Tamil Nadu to Jaffna and back, full board meals and accommodation during their stay and a guided tour of the significant places in Jaffna. The aim is to conduct this program on a monthly basis, engaging different trainers from India each month to ensure a sustained and progressive learning environment and opportunity for the chess enthusiasts in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. Himal Gusain convincingly clinches 14th Salon Open 2024

Top seed IM Himal Gusain scored an unbeaten 7/9 to win 14th Salon Open A 2024. He finished a full point ahead of the competition. IM Philippe Guillaume (FRA) scored sole 6.5/9 to secure second place. He also remained undefeated. IM Armen Petrosyan (ARM) edged past three more players to finish third 6/9. Himal drew with Philippe in Round 5 and defeated Armen in the following round. The total prize fund of Open A was €5000. The top three prizes were €1000, €750 and €500 each. The seven-day nine round Rating Open tournament was organized by Laïneur-Lothaire Chazeau at Espace Charles Trenet boulevard, Salon de Provence in Provence, France from 6th to 12th July 2024. Top seed FM Vedant Panesar scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 2nd G H Raisoni Memorial Pune Rapid Rating Open 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. FM Nikhil Dixit and Bharat Kumar Reddy Poluri scored 8/9 each. They secured second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. Vedant drew with the eventual runner-up Nikhil in the seventh round. Top three finishers remained undefeated. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹300000. The top three prizes were ₹51000 + trophy, ₹30000 and ₹26000 each respectively. 15-year-old IM Dimitar Mardov (USA) scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win 17th Paracin International Chess Festival Open A (>2100) 2024. He finished a full point ahead of the field. Nine players - GM Alexandr Fier (BRA), IM Kushagra Mohan, GM Eltaj Safarli (AZE), IM Aswath S, FM Khuyagtsogt Itgelt (MGL), GM Gergely Antal (HUN), IM Yannay Ben Ari (ISR), IM Enes Tanriverdi (TUR) and GM Krishnan Sasikiran scored 6.5/9 each. They secured second to tenth place respectively. In the Uros Dinic Memorial Rapid Rating event, IM Bojan Maksimovic (BIH) and Kushagra scored 7.5/9 each. They secured the top two places respectively. GM Dejan Pikula (SRB) was third 7/9. The total prize fund in Open A was RSD 1170000. The top three prizes were RSD 300000, 200000 and 100000 along with a trophy each respectively. Magnus Carlsen raises $12 million for Freestyle Chess Grand Slam

Magnus Carlsen and Jan Henric Buettner announced on Thursday 25th July that they have raised US$ 12 Million in funding from VC Left Lane Capital. The new tournament series will showcase world's best players with compelling stories, in a completely new and attractive format for media, spectators, and consumers which aims to revolutionise the world of chess. The participants will be from the 25 Super Grand Masters part of Freestyle Chess Players Club all have an Elo rating of above 2725. The prize fund that will be distributed among the players will be $750000 for the first three events and then $1 Million for every tournament thereafter. Check the Press Release for more details. Dhrupad Kashyap scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 6th Ayodhana Rating Open 2024. He finished a full point ahead of the rest. Kushal O and Anup Shankar R scored 7.5/9 each. They secured second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. Dhrupad's sole draw of the event was against the eventual runner-up, Kushal. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹300000. The top three prizes were ₹50000, ₹30000 and ₹20000 along with a trophy each. The tournament was organized by Chess Players' Parents Forum, Guwahati, Assam at Assam Down Town University in Guwahati, Assam from 9th to 14th July 2024. Samarth J Rao wins Tata Steel 4th All India FIDE Rated Chess Championship for Specially Abled players

Samarth J Rao (1770, KAR) won the Tata Steel 4th All India FIDE Rating Specially abled Chess Championship in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand! Samarth scored 7.5/9 points to clinch first place in the tournament. Venkata Krishna (1889, AP) also scored 7.5/9 points, but was placed second on tiebreaks. Yesu Babu K (1590, AP) secured 3rd place, scoring 7/9 points. The winner, Samarth, received Rs. 25000! Venkata and Yesu Babu received Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 15,000 each. The top 3 position holders of Open and Women's category received ChessBase 17!
