Magnus Carlsen and Anastasia Bodnaruk are World Rapid 2023 champions, Humpy Silver

Magnus Carlsen won his fifth World Rapid and 16th World Championship crown. He remained undefeated. In the press conference he answered to a question that, he did not face strong top players like - Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Fabiano Caruana, Alexander Grischuk, Richard Rapport and others. Vidit Gujrathi scored 9/13 to finish fourth. R Praggnanandhaa and Arjun Erigaisi scored 9/13 and 8.5/13 to secure eighth and 15th places. IM Anastasia Bodnaruk won the Women's event. She defeated Koneru Humpy in the Playoffs to clinch the Gold, Humpy had to settle for second place. FM Sahithi Varshini and WGM Priyanka Nutakki scored an impressive 7.5/11 and 7/11 to be placed 13th and 22nd. She won five games in-a-row, including wins against three GMs - Zhu Chen (QAT), former women's world champion, Valentina Gunina and Vaishali R. IM Anastasia Bodnaruk is the sole leader 7/8, followed by GM Koneru Humpy and WGM Zhai Mo (CHN) at 6.5/8 each. Priyanka took her score to 6/8. In the Open event, Magnus Carlsen (NOR), Vladimir Fedoseev (SLO) and Yangyi Yu (CHN) are in a three-way lead 7/9. HelpChess Foundation: Shreya Hipparagi wins the Tanay Johar Scholarship of Rs. 50,000

Up and coming chess talent Shreya Hipparagi has been selected as the winner of the Tanay Johar Scholarship so she can continue fighting it out over the board. The prospect of her playing chess was at risk due to the financial strain it placed on her parents, since travelling over a hundred kilometres for a tournament created a burden. Tushar Kumar, who has been a chess fanatic for many years, unfortunately lost his brother Tanay to a rare type of cancer. In his memory, to spread positivity and awareness, Tushar instated a Rs. 50,000 scholarship through the HelpChess Foundation. World Rapid 2023 Day 1: Carlsen, Vidit and Arjun Erigaisi in a five-way lead

Arjun Erigaisi and Vidit Gujrathi are two Indians in five-way lead with Magnus Carlsen (NOR) after the fifth round of World Rapid 2023. Ivan Cheparinov (BUL) and Yangyi Yu (CHN) are the remaining leaders. Bharath Subramaniyam H had a great day after starting the event with a win over Germany no.1, Vincent Keymer. Sandipan Chanda also made an unbeaten start scoring three wins in-a-row to end the first day on 4/5, same as Bharath. In the Women's section, IM Nurgyul Salimova (BUL) and GM Jiner Zhu (CHN) are the coleaders with a perfect 4/4. They are followed by six players at 3.5/4. GM Vaishali R is the sole Indian among them. Srihari L R triumphs at 1st SA Castle Rapid Rating Open 2023

IM Srihari L R scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win 1st SA Castle Rapid Rating Open 2023. Srihari finished a half point ahead of the field. Five players - IM FT Harikrishnan A Ra, FM Harshad S, FM Syed Anwar Shazuli, Selvamurugan B and CM Lakshmi Narayanan M V scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed second to sixth respectively according to tie-breaks. Srihari drew against both eventual runner-ups Harikrishnan and Harshad. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹320000. The World Rapid and Blitz Championships 2023 was inaugurated in Samarkand, Uzbekistan on 25th of December 2023. The opening press conference, draw of lots and inauguration ceremony was held at Hotel Silk Road by Minyoun. In this edition, a total of 29 Indians are slated to take part which is the highest ever. Magnus Carlsen (NOR), Zhongyi Tan (CHN) and Bibisara Assaubayeva (KAZ) returns to defend their World Rapid and Blitz titles. The tournament marks the absence of Hikaru Nakamura and Alireza Firouzja. R Praggnanandhaa, Vidit Gujrathi, Nihal Sarin, D Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi, Koneru Humpy, Harika Dronavalli, Divya Deshmukh and Vaishali R are the top Indians in the fray. Indian chess players face robbery in Sunway Sitges Apartments

GM Abhimanyu Puranik won 10th Chessable Sunway Sitges International Chess Festival 2023. He scored 8.5/10 and became a clear champion as he finished a half point ahead of the field. We will mention it in detail in another report. This article is about unfortunate incidents where few Indian players lost their valuables including a passport. Rathanvel wins Kashvi's 1st Rapid Rating Open 2023

IM Rathanvel V S, GM Pranav V, Balkishan A and IM Mohammad Nubairshah Shaikh scored 8/9 at Kashvi's 1st Rapid Rating Open 2023. GM-elect Rathanvel won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. Pranav, Balkishan and Nubairshah were placed second, third and fourth respectively. Only Pranav remained undefeated among them. Balkishan is the sole untitled player among the top ten. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹2600000. It is the highest ever prize fund for a rapid rating open event in India. India wins 51 medals at Asian Youth Chess Championships 2023

India has won a mammoth 51 medals including 19 individual (9 Gold, 6 Silver and 4 Bronze) medals, 32 team (15 Gold, 14 Silver and 3 Bronze) medals at Asian Youth Chess Championships 2023. Sharvaanica A S is the only Indian who won an individual medal in all three formats - Classical, Rapid and Blitz in Under-8 Girls category. Kiyana Parihar won an individual Gold and Silver medal in Under-8 Girls. Harsh Suresh, Muhammad Shayan Noushad Ibrahim, Saparya Ghosh, WIM Tejaswini G, WFM Bhagyashree Patil, Pratitee Bordoloi and Nivedita V C also bagged an individual medal each. Neelash Saha dominates 3rd Dumka Rating Open 2023

IM Neelash Saha scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win 3rd Dumka Rating Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the field. IM Kaustuv Kundu and GM Thej Kumar M S scored 7.5/9 each. They secured second and third place according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹815000. The top three prizes were ₹175000, ₹100000 and ₹50000 along with a trophy each. Neelash defeated the eventual runner-up Kaustuv in the sixth round. He also drew against both GMs - Saptarshi RoyChowdhury and Thej Kumar. This was Neelash's fifth triumph of the year. Alexei Fedorov wins 10th Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed Circuit 2023, Suyog Wagh second

GM Alexei Fedorov scored 7.5/9 to win 10th Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed Circuit Chess Tournament 2023. He finished a full point ahead of the competition. FM Suyog Wagh and IM Asylbek Abdyzhapar scored 6.5/9 each. They were placed second and third according to tie-breaks respectively. Suyog became the sole player to beat the eventual champion, Alexei. He gained 56 Elo rating points. However, he missed an IM-norm by a half point. The series goes on a break as there are two Open GM tournaments slated to take place in Tamil Nadu. Gukesh wins Chennai Grand Masters 2023, Arjun Erigaisi second and Harikrishna third

D Gukesh drew his final round game against Pentala Harikrishna. Arjun Erigaisi defeated Sanan Sjugirov (HUN). Both Gukesh and Arjun ended up having the same score 4.5/7. Gukesh won Chennai Grand Masters on tie-breaks, Arjun was placed second. Pavel Eljanov (UKR) drew against Levon Aronian (USA). Thus, Harikrishna and Eljanov also finished with 4/7 each. Harikrishna secured third place. The objective of organizing this event was certainly a huge success. The top three places were claimed by the Indians. This triumph has moved Gukesh ahead of Anish Giri in the FIDE Circuit leaderboard. Sai Akhil Anand designed and helped with the 'Draw of Lots' in the opening ceremony and the closing ceremony was graced by the one and only - Vishy Anand.
