India's Savitha Shri Baskar Becomes The Asian Women's Champion 2026

IM Savitha Shri Baskar scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 points to become the Asian Women's Individual Chess Champion 2026. Savitha started the tournament on the 6th rank with a rating of 2374. She played tremendous chess and scored 2 consecutive wins in the last 2 rounds to clinch the title. Savitha played with a performance rating of 2555 and increased rating by 19.5 points, taking it to 2395! With this win, Savitha also qualified for the FIDE Women's World Cup 2027.



Crucial Wins

After 7 rounds of play, Savitha was in 4th place with 5.5/7 points, while Afruza Khamdamova was leading the tournament with 6.5/7. Savitha had to catch her if she wanted to win the tournament, and guess what happened in the 8th round? Savitha was paired against Afruza and won to take the joint lead going into the final round.

And in the final round, Savitha defeated Anna Shukhman with black pieces. Afruza also won her last-round game, and both players were on 7.5/9 points, but a better tiebreak score helped Savitha clinch the Asian Champion Title.

The tournament was organised in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, from 29th May to 6th June 2026 with the time control of 90min/40moves+30min/end+30sec increment per move starting from move 1. A total of 102 players took part in this event from the Asian continent.
