Norway Chess 2026: Magnus Carlsen wins against World Champion D Gukesh

Magnus Carlsen defeated the World Champion D Gukesh in the 4th round of Norway Chess 2026. Magnus played an excellent game to outplay Gukesh, and in the post-game interview, Magnus said, "He played himself into trouble!" The other 5 games, including the Women's section, were decided in an Armageddon. Praggnanandhaa defeated Vincent Keymer, while Alireza lost his first game of the tournament against Wesley So. 29th May is a rest day, and the 5th round will start on 30th May at 5:30CEST/8:30 PM IST. Bibisara and Alireza maintain their lead

Bibisara Assaubayeva scored a big win in the 1st round against Koneru Humpy in the classical time control, and she maintained her lead going into the rest day. Alireza Firouzja started the tournament with a win over Magnus Carlsen, and in the next round, he defeated R Praggnanandhaa in classical time format. Both of them are leading in their respective sections

D. Gukesh vs Magnus Carlsen (0-3)

This was the 1st classical clash between Gukesh and Carlsen after last year's table bang. This time,, Magnus played a nice game with the black pieces to seal the victory. Magnus had a bad start as he lost against Alireza and Pragg in the classical format, but now this win against the World Champion will bring him back in good shape

Gukesh made a crucial mistake and played 30.Be4, which allowed a combination for black to win the material. In the game 30...Rb5 31. Qd2 Bb3 32. Rc1 Rxc1 33. Qxc1 Qxd4+ happened.

Schedule

Timings are 5 pm local time and 8:30 pm IST

Format

6 players will take part in the Tournament. The Tournament is a double-round event with Armageddon in case of a tie. The Tournament consists of 10 rounds. Berger tables will be used for the pairings. Drawing of lots will be done at the Technical Meeting. The default time is 15 minutes.

Time Control

Each player will have 120 minutes on the clock with an increment of 10 seconds starting from move 41. The time control for the Armageddon game: white has 10 minutes, and black has 7 minutes with an increment for both players of 1 second per move, starting from move 41.

Draw by Mutual Agreement

Players are not allowed to agree to a draw until at least 30 moves have been made by each player. This rule does not apply to Armageddon games.

Armageddon

If the classical game is drawn, an Armageddon game will be played. It shall start within 20 minutes of the conclusion of the classical game. The player with White pieces will continue with White in Armageddon. If the Armageddon game is drawn, black will win.

Points

Players will get the following points per round:

Win in the classical game: 3 points

Loss in the classical game: 0 points

Draw in the classical game & win Armageddon: 1½ points

Draw in the classical game & loss Armageddon: 1 point
