Tepe Sigeman & Co 2022 R4: Hans Niemann extends his sole lead, Arjun Erigaisi draws

by Shahid Ahmed - 07/05/2022

18-year-old Hans Niemann is on a roll. After winning 55th Capablanca Memorial a few days ago, the American continues his fantastic momentum. He increased his unbeaten streak to 16 games after winning against the UAE no.1 Salem Saleh in fourth round of 27th Tepe Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament. Arjun Erigaisi drew his game with Sweden no.1 Nils Grandelius. He will face the defending champion Jorden van Foreest in Round 5. Jorden is still in search for his first win of the event. Round 5 starts today at 2:00 p.m. CET (5:30 p.m. IST). Salem - Niemann: 0-1

Hans Niemann (USA, 2637) offered an exchange sacrifice, for which he was gaining a valuable pawn and a kingside initiative. Salem Saleh (UAE, 2690) decided to accept it.

Position after 29...Kf6

It was not like White had a better choice. The threat of Rg8 and Nf4 was looming large. White should have gotten rid of the knight 29.Bxd5 instead of 29.Bb5 to continue the fight. The game continued 30.Nd7+ Rxd7 31.Bxd7 Nf4 32.Rd6 Bxg2 33.Bc6 Rg8 Black had enough compensation for the exchange. White's king was relatively weaker and the kingside pawns fell off quickly. White resigned in another ten moves.
