Arjun, Vidit, Nihal, Karthikeyan and Pranav set to battle top players at Quantbox Chennai Grand Masters 2025

Chennai Grand Masters continues to be the strongest classical super tournament to take place in India. The average rating of the Masters section is 2700. For, Challengers, it is 2558. Masters participants - Arjun Erigaisi, Anish Giri (NED), Vincent Keymer (GER), Vidit Gujrathi, Jorden van Foreest (NED), Awonder Liang (USA), Nihal Sarin, Ray Robson (USA), Karthikeyan Murali and Pranav V. Challengers - Abhimanyu Puranik, Aryan Chopra, Leon Luke Mendonca, Pranesh M, Iniyan Pa, Diptayan Ghosh, B Adhiban, Harika Dronavalli, R Vaishali and IM Harshavardhan G B. The event is sponsored and supported by Tamil Nadu Government and Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu. The total prize fund is ₹1 Crore, for Masters it is ₹7500000, an increase of 50% from previous edition. The top three prizes are ₹2500000, ₹1500000 and ₹1000000. The strongest Classical Super tournament in India expands to ten players, Total prize fund ₹ 1 Crore

The tournament, being the strongest ever classical super tournament in India, increases the field from eight to ten players in both Masters and Challengers section. The prize fund in Challengers section is ₹2500000. The top three prizes are ₹700000, ₹400000 and ₹325000. For the first time, two spots in the Challengers section were allotted via online qualifiers played on chess.com. GM Diptayan Ghosh and GM Pranesh M earned those two spots. Diptayan won that event and Pranesh was a finalist there. IM Harshavardhan G B finished third in that event. Due to GM Vladimir Fedoseev's withdrawal from the Masters, he was replaced by GM Karthikeyan Murali. Harshavardhan replaced that void in the Challengers, making himself the first IM to ever play in a Chennai Grand Masters event.

No rest day

Due to a fire at around midnight, the organizers have decided to postpone Round 1 to 7th August, resulting in no rest day on 11th August which was initially supposed to be a rest day for both events.
