Norway Chess Women R2: Anna Muzychuk beats Koneru Humpy
GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR) defeated GM Koneru Humpy to emerge early sole leader at 2nd Norway Chess Women 2025. Humpy made a couple of big mistakes in the major piece endgame. Her first mistake could have ended the game much earlier. However, Anna missed it and the endgame got prolonged. GM R Vaishali drew her Classical game agianst GM Tingjie Lei (CHN). She was losing in Armageddon. However, Tingjie repeated moves as a draw with black pieces in Armageddon equals a win. The reigning Women's World Champion, GM Wenjun Ju (CHN) won her first Armageddon of the event. It was against IM Sara Khadem (ESP). Round 3 starts today from 5 p.m. local time, 8:30 p.m. IST. Apart from youtube, there will also be a live broadcast on Sony Liv. Photo: Norway Chess / Michal Walusza
Wenjun and Tingjie win via Armageddon
GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR) has gained an early sole lead 4.5/6. She is closely followed by GM Tingjie Lei (CHN) and GM Koneru Humpy at 3/6 each.
Anna - Humpy: 3-0
Last year, GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR, 2526) defeated GM Koneru Humpy (2543) with the black pieces in their first game at this event. This time, she won with the white pieces. Their last Classical battle took place at this event only.
Humpy miscalculated something when she played 39...Re7?? and dropped the d6-pawn for no reason 40.Rxd6+- Qc7 now White needed to play 41.Ra8! Rc/ee5 42.f4 and White would have won immediately. However, being low on time caused White to also make an inaccuracy 41.Kh1?! and the win got prolonged. A little over a dozen moves later Black traded queens and arrived at a lost pawn endgame.
Vaishali - Tingjie: 1-1.5
Last year, GM R Vaishali (2475) drew the first Classical versus GM Tingjie Lei (CHN, 2552) at this event and won Armageddon with white pieces. This time also the Classical game ended in a draw.
Tingjie opted for Petroff's Defence again in Armageddon. However, Vaishali deviated with 5.Nc3 instead of 5.d4 which she played earlier in the Classical battle. Tingjie repeated in a winning position as she had the black pieces in Armageddon where a draw means a win.
Sara - Wenjun: 1-1.5
The only time IM Sara Khadem (ESP, 2449) defeated GM Wenjun Ju (CHN, 2580) was over a decade ago in 2012 before she became a Women's World Champion. After that Wenjun won four times and drew twice in Classical rated games. Sara drew her Classical game against Wenjun.
The five-time Women's World Champion, Wenjun won Armageddon.
