Norway Chess Women R1: Humpy gets the better of Vaishali

by Shahid Ahmed - 27/05/2025

Koneru Humpy defeated R Vaishali in the first round of 2nd Norway Chess Women 2025. The queen and bishop vs queen and knight endgame would have ended in a draw if there were an increment from move no.1. However, Vaishali blundered into a checkmate combination in time trouble and lost the game. GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR) had a small advantage in the Classical game against IM Sara Khadem (ESP). It ended in a draw. The in-form GM won Armageddon against the IM. The All-Chinese clash between Tingjie Lei and Wenjun Ju went to Armageddon where the former prolonged her win against the five-time Women's World Champion. Round 2 starts today from 5 p.m. CET, 8:30 p.m. IST. Apart from youtube, there will also be a live broadcast on Sony Liv. Photos: Aditya Sur Roy

Anna and Tingjie win Armageddon

Anna - Sara: 1.5-1

GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR, 2526) has never lost a Classical rated game against IM Sara Khadem (ESP, 2449). That remained unchanged yesterday. Anna had an advantage in the queen, rook and double bishop endgame. However, it fizzled out into a draw.

In Armageddon, they played the same opening, Ruy Lopez Marshall Attack. However, Sara deviated 14...Rxe1+ instead of playing 14...b4 which she played earlier. Black eventually faltered a couple of times in the queen endgame and lost the game.

Humpy - Vaishali: 3-0

GM Koneru Humpy (2543) and GM R Vaishali (2475) played six Classical rated games against each other. Humpy won two, Vaishali one and the remaining three games ended in draws. In a queen and bishop vs queen and knight endgame, Vaishali blundered into a checkmate combination in time trouble.

Position after 42.Bd6

42...Qc1/3 needed to be played to meet 43.Bf8 with Qc7. Instead, Vaishali blundered 42...Qa2?? 43.Bf8 now Black cannot avoid the checkmate threat.

Tingjie - Wenjun: 1.5-1

For the second consecutive year, the Classical rated game between GM Tingjie Lei (CHN, 2552) and GM Wenjun Ju (CHN, 2580) ended in a draw.

This time, Tingjie won Armageddon.
