India hosts an individual Asian championship after almost two decades

The last individual Asian Continental Women's championship took place in Kozhikode 2003. Koneru Humpy won that event. It was the year 2001 when the last Asian Individual Open championship took place in Kolkata. Xu Jun (CHN) became the champion then. Asian Continental championship is one of the few events where India had more women who won this event that men. One of the reasons could be, the Open (then Men's) event started in 1998, while the women's event started in 1981.
