Xiangzhi, Yangyi or Arjun - Who will win 5th Shenzhen Masters 2024?

by Shahid Ahmed - 06/03/2024

Arjun Erigaisi drew his sixth round game against Vladislav Artemiev at 5th Shenzhen Masters 2024. The remaining two leaders - Xiangzhi Bu (CHN) and Yangyi Yu (CHN) drew their game against each other. Xiangyu Xu (CHN) scored his first win of the event against Daniil Dubov. This was the first time former World Rapid champion suffered a loss at this event. Arjun must beat Dubov in the final round to have a chance of a first place finish. Xiangzhi and Yangyi have better tie-breaks which means Arjun's win may not prove to be enough as he needs two more results to go in his way. Round 7 starts tomorrow at 2 p.m. local time, 11:30 a.m. IST. Photos: Organizer/Liang Ziming

Xiangyu - Dubov: 0.5-0.5

Xiangyu Xu (CHN, 2623) pushed his passed pawn to c7 on 13th move. It proved to play a crucial role in his victory over Daniil Dubov (2708).

Position after 27.Ke4

Black needed to get rid of the c7-pawn as it had already crippled the c8-rook. 27...f5+ 28.Kf3 Rd3+ 29.Kf2 Rxc3 followed by Na8 was a way to remove the burden. Instead, 27...Na4? 28.Kf3 Nc5 29.Rhe1 Re6? 30.Rxe6 Nxe6 31.Rxb7 gave White the decisive advantage and he went on to win the game.
