2nd Namma Bengaluru GM R2-3: Paras Dilip Bhoir beats two IMs in-a-row, scores a hat-trick

by Shahid Ahmed - 11/04/2025

Paras Dilip Bhoir defeated two IMs on the second day to maintain a perfect score at 2nd Namma Bengaluru GM Category A (>1900) 2025. The 16-year-old made a fantastic start at his debut GM tournament. He defeated IM Ajay Karthikeyan and IM Srihari L consecutively in Round 2 and 3 respectively. He is now the sole untitled player among the 19 players who are at a perfect 3/3. 11-year-old Avirat Chauhan scored the first big upset of the tournament as he defeated GM Boris Savchenko, one of the favorites to win the event. FM John Veny Akkarakaran is the only other non GM/IM who is at 3/3. Round 4 starts tomorrow at 3 p.m. IST. Photos: Shahid Ahmed

Round 2: Rajarishi, Avirat and Paras score big wins

Kartavya - Karen

Position after 18...Qc8

Kartavya Anadkat (2187) got himself a great position against GM Karen Grigoryan (ARM, 2556). 19.Rxd7 Ra1+ 20.Nb1 Bxe4 21.Qc7 is how White needed to follow through. Instead, 19.Bxd7 Ra1+ 20.Nb1 Qc4 21.Qb8?? turned things completely in Black's favor. 21.Rd4 was White's one last opportunity to maintain his decisive advantage.

Rajarishi - Ayush

Position after 19.Qc2

IM Ayush Sharma (2485) made a positional mistake 19...g6? 20.e5 h4 Black actually needed to play h4 first. 21.Ne2 Nh7 22.Bc1 and White went on to convert his advantage into a win. The finish is beautiful. White king went all the way to e7 to deliver checkmate with rook at f8.

Avirat - Savchenko

Position after 27.a4

Nine moves earlier, GM Boris Savchenko (2459) sacrificed an exchange. However, he did not get anything out of it. In the above position, he blundered 27...Qd7?? Avirat was first thinking of 28.Nxe5 before his opponent made the mistake. However, he realized that it would have been a mistake by him. He found the correct continuation 28.Rxd3 Bxh2+ 29.Kxh2 cxd3 30.Rd2 and went on to win the game comfortably.

Harshit - Goutham

Position after 35...Bd3

Harshit Ranjan Sahu (2142) had plenty of winning chances against IM Goutham Krishna H (2449). Quite possibly the best one was after 35...Bd3. Find out the pretty finish which he missed. 36.Nf7+ Kh7 37.Ng5+ Kh6 and the game ended in a draw via repetition.

GM Alexei Fedorov won a wild game against CM Vivaan Vijay Saraogi which could have gone either way

IM Harsh Suresh - Nirvan Bhamidi: 0.5-0.5

Paras - Ajay Karthikeyan

Position after 21.Na4

IM Ajay Karthikeyan (2387) had to play 21...c5 to prevent Nb6. However, he opted for 21...R4b5. Paras Dilip Bhoir (2085) jumped his knight to b6 22.Nb6 Bf8 23.Kh1 Bb4 24.Nxd7 Qxd7 25.Bb6 the bishop is very strong at b6 and the rook at b5 is virtually trapped. First Black lost the a6-pawn and then an exchange.

WIM Mrudul Dehankar held IM Subhayan Kundu to a draw

WGM Kiran Manisha Mohanty defeated IM Semetei Tologon Tegin (KGZ)

Vijaya Kumar, Founder of VR group, made the ceremonial first move with GM Stany G A on the top board

Ajay Santhosh - Stany

Position after 60.Kd5

Is it winning for Black or is it a draw? The first move that comes to mind in the above position is the obvious 60...Be7. Find out if it is correct. GM Stany G A (2454) missed his opportunity and the game ended in a draw.

Ajay Santhosh Parvathareddy escaped with a draw after his opponent, GM Stany G A missed his chance

Viresh - Alexei

Position after 35.Rg5

White is making a direct threat 36.Rxh5+ gxh5 37.Bxf5 to draw the game. 35...Qe1 36.Rxh5+ Kg7 is winning for Black. However, GM Alexei Fedorov (2396) decided to reinforce the h5-knight 35...Be8 36.Rxh5+ gxh5 37.Bxf5+ Rxf5 38.Qxf5+ Bg6 39.Qf6 Qe1 40.Qe7+ Kh6 41.Qf8+ Kh7 and the game ended in a draw via perpetual check. Viresh Sharnarthi (2232) showed nice resource.

Viresh Sharnarthi made a nice save against GM Alexei Fedorov

Srihari - Paras

Position after 21...Nf5

Is it wise to sacrifice an exchange and take on f5? It might seem like a good idea but Paras Dilip Bhoir (2085) felt that it was not. He explained it in the interview which you can check it out below.
