by Shahid Ahmed - 12/04/2025

GM Deepan Chakkravarthy scored a crushing victory against GM Karen Grigoryan (ARM) in Round 4 of 2nd Namma Bengaluru GM 2025. The second seeded Armenian went wrong in the Sicilian Dragon which allowed Deepan to seize his opportunity with a beautiful thematic knight sacrifice. The remaining six players at perfect score are - GM Manuel Petrosyan (ARM), GM Levan Pantsulaia (GEO), GM Pranav Anand, IM Sanket Chakravarty, IM Viani Antonio Dcunha and IM Rajesh Vav. Viani defeated IM Tornike Sanikidze (GEO). FM Suyog Wagh outplayed IM Aronyak Ghosh after the latter lost one pawn too many. Tomorrow is the last of the two double round day. Round 5 starts at 9:30 a.m. IST. Photos: Shahid Ahmed

IM Sanket Chakravarty scored the fastest win among the leaders against his statemate IM Kaustuv Kundu. IM Padmini Rout became the sole female player at 3.5/4, after she defeated WIM Diajeng Theresa Singgih (INA) who was having a great run. IM Ethan Vaz and Manas Gaikwad missed great opportunities against GM Marat Dzhumaev (UZB) and GM Sandipan Chanda respectively. Soham Roy salvaged a draw from a difficult position against GM Alexey Fedorov.

GM Deepan Chakkravarthy is one of the seven leaders at a perfect 4/4

Deepan - Karen

Position after 16...Nc4??

GM Karen Grigoryan (ARM, 2556) blundered 16...Nc4?? His opponent found the nice tactical shot 17.Ne6!+- fxe6 18.Qxg6+ Kd8 19.Qxg7 Dragon bishop is more valuable than rook, hence the obvious choice Nde5 20.f4 Nxe3 21.fxe5 Nxd1 22.Rxd1 and White went on to win the game comfortably.

GM Deepan Chakkravarthy got the better of GM Karen Grigoryan (ARM)

Tornike - Viani

Position after 24.Rf4?

24.Rf4? was not the best way to drive the knight away from g4. Instead, GM Tornike Sanikidze (GEO, 2448) could have played 25.h3. IM Viani Antonio Dcunha (2378) supported his knight 24...h5 25.Bc2 Bb5 26.h3 Nf6 27.Rd1 Rg3 28.Rd2 Re8 29.Nd3 Re4 here Viani was considering Ne4 which he mentioned in the post-game interview. Black eventually went on to win the game.
