21st Delhi GM Open R8: Mihail Nikitenko joins Abhijeet Gupta in the lead

GM Abhijeet Gupta played a relatively calm draw against GM Manuel Petrosyan (ARM) to maintain his lead at 21st Delhi GM Open 2025. GM Mihail Nikitenko won against GM Luka Paichadze (GEO) to join the lead with Abhijeet. Both are at 7/8 each. IM Neelash Saha, IM Aronyak Ghosh and IM Sriram Adarsh Uppala drew against GM S L Narayanan, GM Vitaly Sivuk (SWE) and GM Manik Mikulas (SVK) respectively. GM Diptayan Ghosh got the better of GM Boris Savchenko in the queen and minor piece endgame. IM P Saravana Krishnan could not get out of the gate against GM Aditya S Samant. GM Boris Savchenko (2456) made a tiny inaccuracy 34...Qd7? 35.Nd6 Nd5 36.Qxb5 Qxb5 37.Nxb5 and Black arrived a lost endgame. Of course, it was not easy to convert the advantage into but GM Diptayan Ghosh (2573) managed to maneuver his knights until his opponent faltered.

Delayed Schliemann in Ruy Lopez did not work out for IM P Saravana Krishnan (2272) against GM Aditya S Samant (2498).

Position after 29...Nd6?

IM Hari Madhavan N B (2386) made a big mistake when he played 29...Nd6? Viresh Sharnarthi (2236) grabbed his opportunity 30.Rxa3 Rxa3 31.Bxd6 Ra6 32.Be5 Rf8? 33.Rc7 and White won the game in the next few moves.

A total of 419 players including 24 GMs, 20 IMs and two WIMs are taking part from 17 countries across the world. The eight-day ten round Rating Open tournament is being organized by Delhi Chess Association at Tivoli Gardens in New Delhi from 7th to 14th June 2025. The time control of the event was 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment per move.
