21st Delhi GM Open R4: Eleven players at a perfect score

by Shahid Ahmed - 10/06/2025

The top two seeds - GM S L Narayanan and GM Diptayan Ghosh won their fourth round game at 21st Delhi GM Open 2025. Narayanan capitalized on his opponent's mistake in the rook and same color bishop endgame. Diptayan had a relatively comfortable win. The National Under-11 Open 2024 champion, CM Madhvendra Pratap Sharma put up a very good fight against GM Deepan Chakkravarthy. Only in a complex position, the 11-year-old could not seize his advantage after his opponent made an error. Bivor Adak held the third seeded, GM Levan Pantsulaia (GEO) to a solid draw. A total of eleven players including two IMs - Dinesh Kumar Sharma and Harsh Suresh are at a perfect score 4/4. Round 5 starts today at 9:30 a.m. IST. Photos: Anmol Bhargav

Bivor Adak plays a solid draw against Levan Pantsulaia

Narayanan - Duc Hoa

Position after 36.Rxd5

36...g5 37.Be3 Ke6 helps Black to get rid of the b5-pawn. Instead, 36...Rc8?? 37.Be3+- Ke6 38.Rd3 Bb8 39.Ra3 Rc4 40.a6 Bd6 41.Ra2 Bc5 42.Bxc5 Rxc5 43.b6 and White won. White's queenside pawns played a crucial role in GM S L Narayanan (2600) scoring a win.

Top seed GM S L Narayanan is at 4/4

Second seeded GM Diptayan Ghosh scored a smooth win over IM Uurtsaikh Agibileg (MGL)

Manuel - Manish

Position after 56.Kb5

The above knight endgame is a draw but Black needs to play precisely as knight is trapped. 56...a3! 57.bxa3 Kg5 58.Kb6 Kg4! 59.Kxb7 Kf3 60.Nd4+ Ke4 61.Nb5 Kd5 62.Kb6 Nc1 63.a4 Nb3 and it should have ended in a draw comfortably. Instead, IM Manish Anto Cristiano F (2365) blundered 56...Kg5?? 57.Kxa4 now his knight is getting trapped and his king is out of place from attacking GM Manuel Petrosyan's (ARM, 2541) knight at e2.

GM Manuel Petrosyan (ARM) capitalized on his opponent IM Manish Anto Cristiano F's mistake in the knight endgame

Deepan - Madhvendra

Position after 29...Rg8

In a sharp position, GM Deepan Chakkravarthy (2410) misplaced his bishop 30.Be4?? Qg3 31.Qh2 Qxd3 a flashy move instead 31...Nxe4 32.dxe4 Qg4 would have maintained the upper hand for Black. The game continued 32.Nxc5 Qxe4+ 33.Nxe4 Nxe4? Black had to play Rxe4. All of this could have been avoided if White played 30.Bxh6 instead of the text. CM Madhvendra Pratap Sharma (2166) went on to lose the game after putting up a great fight against the strong GM.
