1st Indore International GM Open R4: And then there were four

by Himank Ghosh - 04/04/2023

After 4 rounds of play, there are 4 players with a perfect score in the 1st Indore International GM Open - GM Deep Sengupta, IM Aronyak Ghosh, IM Nitish Belurkar and GM Marat Dzhumaev. One of the unexpected results of this round was talented junior Aakash G (1842) taking down IM Anuj Shrivatri (2407)! On the same day, the U-1800 tournament IDA Cup International Open Chess Tournament also took off with over 300 players taking part. Today is a double round day - the 5th round starts from 10 AM IST, and the 6th round from 4 PM IST. Photo: Himank Ghosh

The art of swindling a higher-rated opponent

Usually, making one mistake against a titled player means the game is over - you can pack your bags. But what if the mistake is not very apparent, the way to win not so clear? In that case, there is a chance you can pull off a swindle. That's exactly what happened in the 4th round of the 1st Indore International GM Open.

Round 4: IM Anuj Shrivatri - Aakash G: 0-1

Board no.11: IM Anuj Shrivatri (left) vs Aakash G (right) | Photo: Himank Ghosh

Anuj got quite a comfortable position with the White pieces from the get-go. However, young Aakash proved to be quite tricky. Even after being down an exchange, he was able to generate good counterplay! Soon enough, Anuj lost most of his advantage:

Position after 34. Qc7

Rb8 would've won the game almost instantly. But 34. Qc7 allows this nice move 34...Ba6! After 35. Qa5 Bxc4 36. Bxc4 Bc5, Black is already slightly better. The losing blunder came in a few moves later:

Position after 41. Qd5

White's position is already quite bad, but Qd5 loses instantly to 41...Rxc4! The point is, after Qxc4 there is ...Qe4+ followed by ...Bg1+, winning the Queen. Anuj resigned after ...Rxc4.

IM Utsab Chakraborty - GM Dzhumaev Marat: 0-1

Board no.4 - IM Utsab Chakraborty vs GM Dzhumaev Marat

This game is a perfect demonstration of why getting active play is so important. In the closed Ruy Lopez, White tried to gain play in the Queenside by shifting all his major pieces there. Taking advantage of that, Marat sacrificed a Knight and started a huge kingside attack!

35....Bd5 is undoubtedly one of the star moves of the game!

The idea is very beautiful: after 36. Qxd5 came in 36...e3+! winning the White Queen. Marat went on to win the game in a few more moves.
