Tal Memorial 05: Anand roars back to business

Gelfand had been struggling in the tournament until the fourth round, but things soon got worse for him as Vishy invaded the position of the 2012 world title challenger. In a Sicilian Rossolimo, Anand chose to aim for an opposite coloured bishop ending so that he could exploit his opponent's weak dark-squared complex on the kingside! Humpy, Harika and Padmini ready to play in Iran

The Women's World Championship 2017, scheduled to take place in Iran, has been mired in controversy. It is a knock-out tournament of 64 players in order to decide the new World Champion. Hou Yifan has already publicly announced her disdain for the format and decided to not take part. However, the real controversy lies in the fact that all the 64 players will have to compulsorily cover their hair while playing. We asked Humpy, Harika and Padmini, the Indian participants at the event, for their views on this subject. Read on to know what three of the best players in our country today have to say.

Tal Memorial 04: Kramnik squashes Anand!

The clash between the two former world champions ended with Vishy Anand losing with the black pieces. Vladimir Kramnik's consistent queenside pressure in a Giuoco Piano paid off in the end. One must admit that Vishy defended tenaciously, but it was not to be. This is a serious blow to Anand's chances in the tournament as he has slipped back to fifty percent. Tal Memorial 03: Anand and Li Chao split the point in a Nimzo

A topical Nimzo-Indian led to a position in which Anand was certainly not worse at any point. He had an extra pawn, but Li Chao got a bit of an initiative. Anand decided to diffuse it by giving it back and reaching a very equal endgame in which White was more or less forced to repeat moves. Tal Memorial 02: Anand trounces Mamedyarov's speculative sacrifice

Vishy Anand joined the lead at the 2016 Tal Memorial in a stylish manner. Anand fended off a sacrificial attack by Mamedyarov to emerge up a piece in a winning endgame, despite Black's three passed pawns as compensation. A study-like finish gave a nice win to the Indian former World Champion. Harikrishna enters World top 10

On 26th of September Harikrishna beat Ivan Cheparinov in the first round of the Spanish Team Championships. With this victory he gained four Elo points. This took his live rating to 2765.8. This was good enough to surpass Ding Liren and enter the top ten players in the world! The live rating lists are dynamic and change with the daily result. However, this does not take away from the fact that as on 27th of September we have two Indians in the top ten chess players of the world! Kudos to Harikrishna for his consistent performances.

Evgeny Tomashevsky was playing the Modern Scotch from the black side in the first round of the 2012 Tal Memorial. He lost the game to Teimour Radjabov. Fast forward to 2016 -- Tomashevsky was playing the Modern Scotch from the black side once again, this time against Nepomniachtchi. he lost once again! The Scotch is an opening that evolved from the swashbuckling games of the 19th century. It has long been associated with exciting play, but people often doubt its positional base. In recent times, however, it has evolved into an aggressive alternative to the Spanish. We investigate both the games that we talked about in this article with analysis by Teimour Radjabov and Alejandro Ramirez!

Tal Memorial 01: Anand holds the man who comes in peace with accurate play

Anand began with an interesting move order, but then, he was in trouble due to a missed intermezzo. But he managed to make a bunch of accurate moves and held Anish Giri to a draw. The first round of the Tal Memorial belonged to Nepomniachtchi. After only 23 moves and less than two hours of play, Black was forced to resign in a hopeless position. Svidler almost toppled Kramnik, but was unable to put the finishing touch. All other games were solid draws to kick off the event. Mark Dvoretsky - the greatest chess trainer is no more

The legendary trainer Mark Dvoretsky is no more. He died on 26th of September 2016 at the age of 68 years. Mark had been suffering from ill health from quite some time. However, he had been working on chess right until the very end of his life. He was a true chess lover who spent almost his time helping other players to reach their highest potential in chess. The chess world has lost a visionary and a great human being. Mark is no more but his books and teachings will continue to inspire generations of chess players.

Tal Memorial Blitz: Two losses and no wins, the Tiger is yet to wake up!

The Tal Memorial 2016 tournament began with the traditional blitz tournament and Anand had a miserable outing. He drew seven games and lost two to finish with 3.5/9. Azeri GM Shakriyar Mamedyarov won the event with 7.5/9. The main tournament begins today, in a while, but before that, enjoy our brief overview of Anand's performance.
