Aditya Mittal analyzes Aronian vs Rapport

In the tenth round of the Tata Steel Masters 2017 Levon Aronian played a beautiful game against Richard Rapport. The game contained excellent opening preparation, exquisite middlegame combination and a swift final attack. This brilliancy caught the attention of our annotator Aditya Mittal. The 10-year-old from Mumbai has analyzed the game in detail and now shares his findings with us. In this article you will also find video analysis by GM Daniel King.

Gibraltar 02: Draws, Drama and a Fallen Flag

The top seeds came tumbling down to the ground from their high pedestal. Fabiano Caruana, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Peter Svidler and more had to settle for draws against lower rated players. Tata Steel 10: Harikrishna holds the World Champion to a draw

Harikrishna Pentala managed to hold the World Champion Magnus Carlsen to a draw in the tenth round of the Tata Steel Chess 2017. Adhiban showed some blistering levels of preparation in the Bg5 Najdorf against Ian Nepomniachtchi. He was very close to a win, but couldn't finish off his Russian opponent. Chennai 07-10: Adam Tukhaev wins the tourney and the Indian circuit

Ukraine's GM Adam Tukhaev finished with three draws to become the Chennai Open 2017 champion with 8.5/10. He won the tournament by a half-point margin. Four players tied for the second place with 8.0/10 and the best Indian among them was IM S. Nitin. Express Report.

Tata Steel 09: India holds fort against China and Russia!

Both the Indian players had their backs against the wall. Adhiban was going down against his Chinese opponent Wei Yi, while Harikrishna had been pinned down by the Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi. By means of staunch defence and making opponent's task of winning as difficult as possible, both Adhiban and Hari managed to save a draw! It was a great result for all the Indian fans. With 248 players from 53 countries in the Masters section, 71 of them being grandmasters, this is an extremely strong tournament. Eight players are the favourites to win the tournament. Giants of the Gibraltar Masters

Be it amateurs, masters or the absolute bigwigs of the business, all have arrived at the Caleta Hotel in Gibraltar for the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival. Scheduled to be played between January 23 and February 4, the Festival features five events for players of all strengths. The highlight obviously is the Master’s Open which is a star-studded field of 255 players includes a wide array of players from A-listers like Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Hou Yifan on one hand and a ton of norm-hungry youngsters on the other – the exact ingredients for some spectacular chess. Furthermore, there’s a total prize fund of £ 190,000 up for grabs with £ 23,000 for the first prize winner!  

Tata Steel 08: Adhi – the unstoppable force!

Adhiban qualified to the Masters section by winning the Tata Steel Challengers in 2016. The Indian GM is showing no signs of being a qualifier! He is beating these top guys right, left and center. In the last four rounds he has scored 3.5/4 against an average opposition of 2770! In the eighth round, he beat Dmitry Andreikin with 1.e4 e5 2.Nc3!? Harikrishna drew his game against Wei Yi. Chennai 04-06: Adam Tukhaev leads

The tournament is heating up but the first place is becoming distant for most of the players. Because Ukrainian GM Adam Tukhaev has galloped ahead to a perfect score! Indian challenge is led by GM Sahaj Grover, who after a couple of questionable games in Delhi Open, has begun to play with his usual flair. Nitin Pai brings us an illustrated report.

IM Arghyadip Das wins 1st Queen’s Gambit Rapid Chess

The 1st Queen's Gambit rapid chess was held on the 14th and 15th of January 2017 in Kolkata. It was a strong tournament with the first prize of Rs.15,000 and the participation of two IMs and one WGM. IM Arghyadip Das of Railways emerged victorious followed by IM Suvrajit Saha. The most impressive part about the tournament was the organization - no spot entries, beginning the games on time and ending them before the schedule. Tata Steel 07: Adhiban 'polishes' off Wojtaszek

The Tata Steel Masters is turning out to be a riveting book of mystery. Every passing page (round) makes the plot all the more interesting. India's B. Adhiban proved that his win over Sergey Karjakin was no fluke as he defeated Radoslaw Wojtaszek. There were many misses, but none so drastic as Magnus missing a mate in three against Giri. The 92nd edition of the Hastings Chess Congress was held at the Horntyte Park Sports Complex between December 28, 2016 and January 5, 2017. The 100 player field included 12 Grandmasters and 14 international Masters from 23 countries. Beating that stiff a competition, after 9 rounds of play, India's GM Deep Sengupta emerged victorious with a score of 7.0/9. In the following interview, Deep talks about his shaky start at the event, when and how he began playing chess, his forthcoming marriage and a lot more.

Chennai 02+03: No Play due to Protests

The fourth round of Chennai Open 2017 was scheduled to be held on 20 January 2017. Things were on course when news arrived that Chennai is enforcing a 12-hour shutdown on itself in protest against the Supreme Court ruling on Jallikattu, a popular Tamil ethnic sport. The organizers were forced to abandon the idea of playing a round amidst this protest and postponed it to the next day. The games finally began an hour back. Niklesh Jain reports from Chennai.
