Record participation at the Delhi International 2017

The 15 the edition of Delhi Open International 2017 will witness the participation of nearly 1800 players. Led by Bharat Singh Chauhan and his able team, this has truly become a flagship event of our country. Farrukh Amonatov (2619) will be the top seed in the A group followed by Lalith Babu (2587) who will be looking to break into the 2600 zone. "The atmosphere in Mumbai is not congenial to produce another GM"

Grandmaster Pravin Thipsay, the only GM that the city of Mumbai has ever produced, was in Delhi for a coaching camp from the 3rd to the 6th of January 2017. This is the fourth consecutive year that Thipsay has visited the capital to pass on his knowledge to the talented youngsters. Jitendra Choudhary went to the camp and was able to ask Pravin a few questions. The interview was short, but has crucial points, most important being why isn't the city producing another grandmaster and who he think will be the next Vishy Anand.

Rilton Cup 07-09: Sasikiran stamps the Indian dominance

The fantastically organized Rilton Cup came to an end in Hotel Clarion, Stockholm, Sweden. The tournament was practically decided by the all-India penultimate round clash between grandmasters Krishnan Sasikiran and Swapnil Dhopade. Sasikiran took the point and a final round draw meant that he won the tournament. We have an illustrated report.

Organizational excellence at National Schools 2017

National Schools is taking place from the 5th to the 7th of January 2017 in Nagpur. We made our way to the venue and witnessed some extra-ordinary scenes. 800 students had gathered to enjoy chess. At the same time the organizers put in all their efforts to ensure that participants and parents get all that they need at one place. Shaastra Rapids: Chess amidst flora and fauna of a Tech. School!

The city of Chennai was devastated for a second consecutive December when a cyclone hit the coast. But this did not stop the Shaastra Rapids, part of the IIT Madras college festival, from going ahead. The number of players participating did get affected but the quality of the tournament did not. Two grandmasters, six international masters and several fide masters vied for the Rs. Two lakhs prize money. Let Prof. Anantharam tell you who laughed his way to the bank. From 1187 to 2219 in just three years

Some kids are able to excel at just about everything they do. Prithu Gupta is one such student. At the age of just 12 years he is able to speak Spanish fluently. He is academically bright, maintains a CGPA of 10. But the most astonishing part about this Delhi boy's story is the massive 1032 Elo point gain from 1187 to 2219 in just three years. Jitendra Choudhary sent us a brief portrait about this future star of Delhi. 

National Schools 2017 kicks off in Nagpur

National schools 2017 is taking place in Nagpur from the 5th to the 7th of January 2016. 700 kids from all over the country have come here to fight for the medals and ChessBase prizes. After three rounds many players are on 3.0/3. But one particularly exciting match-up is Dhyana Patel against Mrudul Dehankar. Niklesh Jain, who is at the venue, sends us an illustrated report.
