Prague Masters 2023 R4: Bogdan-Daniel breaks the Berlin, joins the lead with Keymer

Bogdan-Daniel Deac (ROU) defeated Ray Robson (USA) to join the lead with Vincent Keymer (GER) 2.5/4 at 5th Prague International Chess Festival 2023 Masters. Deac capitalized on his opportunity when his opponent made a positional mistake, allowing his queen to intrude on Black's kingside easily. Keymer had a 100-move marathon draw against the Czech Republic no.1, David Navara. Pentala Harikrishna had another hard-fought draw against the legendary, Boris Gelfand (ISR). Tech Mahindra GCL Day 3: Ganges Grandmasters remain invincible, Triveni Continental Kings climb up

Ganges Grandmasters maintain their sole lead by beating Balan Alaskan Knights 3-0 (11-6). Apart from being undefeated, they are the only team which has only two members suffering a loss each. Leinier Dominguez Perez's win over Teimour Radjabov certainly set the tone for the team. Bella Khotenashvili and Andrey Esipenko ensured the team gets some more valuable game points. Triveni Continental Kings started the day by losing their match against SG Alpine Warriors 0-3 (7-8). However, they bounced back by finishing the day with a victory over Balan Alaskan Knights. Both TCK and SGAW have the same match points 9 currently, the former having one more match played than the latter. Oleg Korneev wins 2nd Laimer Pfingst Open 2023, Souhardo second and ShyamSundar third

GM Oleg Korneev, IM Souhardo Basak and GM ShyamSundar M scored 7/9 each at 2nd Laimer Pfingst Open A (>1800) 2023. Korneev won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Souhardo was placed adjuged second and ShyamSundar third. All three of them remained undefeated. Korneev drew with Souhardo in the fifth round and Souhardo shared the point against ShyamSundar in the following. The top three prizes were €1500, €1000 and €600 each respectively. Prague Challengers 2023 R2-3: Akash misses a win against Motylev

Pentala Harikrishna drew his third game in-a-row at 5th Prague International Chess Festival 2023 Masters. He had a hard fought draw against the tournament leader, Germany no.1 Vincent Keymer. Ray Robson (USA) scored the sole victory of the round in the Masters section. He played sublime chess in his first-ever rated game encounter against the legendary Boris Gelfand (ISR). Robson and Keymer are currently in the lead 2/3, followed by six players at 1.5/3 including Harikrishna. In the Challengers section, Akash G missed a golden opportunity to win against Alexander Motylev (ROU). Akash had a decisive advantage for the better part of the game. Tech Mahindra GCL Day 2: SG Alpine Warriors succumb to the sole leader Ganges Grandmasters

The highly anticipated match of the day was between SG Alpine Warriors and Ganges Grandmasters. The sole reason could be deduced as the battle between Magnus Carlsen and Vishy Anand. We got a glimpse of the Carlsen we are familiar with, one tiny positional inaccuracy and he will punish you for that. However, that win did not turn out enough for the team as Richard Rapport and Bella Khotenashvili scored important victories over D Gukesh and Elisabeth Paehtz which meant SG Alpine Warriors losing to Ganges Grandmasters 0-3 (6-11). Balan Alaskan Knights bounced back after their loss against SGAW by defeating upGrad Mumba Masters 0-3 (5-14) by a huge margin. Sivakasi Chess Club, a strong outfit from the southern part of Tamil Nadu celebrates its 50th year of inception by organising three strong tournaments in the month of July. Sivakasi, well known for the fireworks, match works and printing industries, has a flurry of chess activities regularly. The itinerary for the month of July is a rapid rating tournament with a prize money of ₹150000 on 1st and 2nd July, a unique state level Chess Doubles tournament on 2nd July and a FIDE rated open tournament for a prize money of ₹10 lacs from 21st to 25th July. Srihari L clinches Visalakshi Arunachalam 7th SCS Rating Open 2023 with a perfect 8/8

Top seed Srihari L scored a perfect 8/8 to win Visalakshi Arunachalam 7th SCS Rating Open 2023. He finished a full point ahead of the field. Thus, tie-breaks were not required. Six players - Selvamurugan B, Umashankar A, Aakash G, Nandish V S, Sa Kannan and Vignesh Kannan P scored 7/8 each. They were placed second to seventh respectively according to tie-breaks. Srihari defeated his sole pursuer Mithun Anand V 6.5/7 in the final round to become a clear champion. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹500000. The last time Vishy Anand played a rated tournament game was on 9th October 2022 at European Club Cup. After eight months and 13 days, the maestro did not show any rust on the board. In fact, he felt very optimistic about his position when he played 34.Qg1! against Jan-Krzysztof Duda. He felt that his queen and rook were flooding towards the kingside. The other former world champion in his team, Yifan Hou scored the second decisive game of the match against Alexandra Kosteniuk. Thus, Chingari Gulf Titans lost to Ganges Grandmasters 0-3 (4-10) without conceding a single match. Pentala Harikrishna started his title defense with a relatively quiet draw in the fifth edition of Prague International Chess Festival 2023 Masters. The result against the Czech Republic no.2 Thai Dai Van Nguyen turned out to be the same as their last two encounters. Germany no.1 Vincent Keymer scored the sole victory of the round against Hao Wang (CHN). A sharp middlegame liquidated into a rook endgame where the Chinese made some technical mistake which cost him the game. In the Challengers section, 12-year-old prodigy, FM Vaclav Finek (CZE) scored the sole win of the round against GM Akash G. Tech Mahindra Global Chess League squared off with a friendly game between Vishy Anand and Anand Mahindra. It goes without saying that it filled everyone with joy. The Chairman of Mahindra Group was certainly well-prepared for the game as he made theoretical moves in the Ruy Lopez/Spanish opening, before the game had to be cut short due to time constraints. The champion's trophy was revealed in presence of all six teams and guests. The first day will have two matches. After six rounds at the 21st ASEAN+ Age-Group Championships

Regional powerhouse Vietnam continues to dominate in standard chess after six rounds of play. Vietnamese players have the top three positions in the Open U-8, Open U-10, Open U-12, Open U-14, Open U-16 and Open U-18 categories, and it is very much the same in the Girls U-8 & U-10 Combined and Girls U-18. It is only in the Open U-20 that we have a fierce largely non Vietnam fight where Filipino IM Daniel Quizon leads with 5/6 closely followed by Thailand FM Prin Laohawirapap on 4.5/6, and who are followed by another Filipino IM Michael Concio Jr, and Vietnam’s Ngo Duc Tri, both on 4/6. There are also challenges to the Vietnamese in Girls U-12 & U-14 Combined where there is a Filipina in third place, a Filipina even leads in Girls U-16, and in Girls U-20 where a Chinese is the leader. 8th Johor International Open kicks off from 5th July

The Johor Chess Open is back for its 8th edition and it promises to be bigger and better than ever before. The tournament will take place from the 5th to the 11th of July 2023. This year, there are two sections – the Masters and the Amateurs. The 8th Johor International Open is now part of the new ASEAN CHESS Series! The total prize money for the Masters section is RM90,000 while the Amateurs section has RM35,000 up for grab. So, whether you are a seasoned chess player or a beginner, there is a chance for you to win big at the Johor Chess Open. Sethuraman S P wins Rotachess Rapid Rating Open 2023

Top seed of the tournament, GM Sethuraman S P scored 8/9 to win Rotachess Rapid Rating Open 2023. Despite losing the penultimate round game against GM Bharath Subramaniyam H, he bounced back by winning the final round game against IM Ravi Teja S. Four more players, GM Bharath Subramaniyam H, GM Karthikeyan Murali, GM Arjun Kalyan and IM Bala Chandra Prasad Dhulipalla also scored 8/9 each. They were placed second to fifth according to tie-breaks. Bharath, Karthikeyan and Bala remained undefeated. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹550000. The top three prizes were ₹75000, ₹50000 and ₹35000 along with a trophy each. Harikrishna set to defend his title at Prague International Chess Festival 2023 Masters

The fifth edition of Prague International Chess Festival 2023 starts today. India no.4 and World no.32 Pentala Harikrishna will be defending his Masters title as he won it last year convincingly. Harikrishna is third-highest rated player in the field. He got number ten at the Drawing of Lots. He will face Czech Republic no.2, Thai Dai Van Nguyen in the first round. India's 66th GM Akash G will be the sole participant in the Challengers section. He will start his campaign against FM Vaclav Finek (CZE). Both Masters and Challengers will be a Round-Robin event.
