Sharan Rao convincingly clinches 6th Kudremukh Trophy Rapid Rating Open 2024

IM Sharan Rao scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 6th Kudremukh Trophy Rapid Rating Open 2024. 11-year-old FM Aaron Reeve Mendes (CAN), Mandar Pradip Lad and Augustin A scored 8/9 each. They were placed second, third and fourth according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹300000. The top three prizes were ₹30000, ₹20000 and ₹10000 along with a trophy each. Vidit Gujrathi played a fantastic game to beat Parham Maghsoodloo (IRI) in Round 11 of 86th Tata Steel Masters 2024. He mentioned in the post-game interview that it was one of the best moves he ever found. Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) defeated the four-time reigning women's world champion - Wenjun Ju (CHN) to emerge sole leader 7.5/11. D Gukesh played an exciting game against Alireza Firouzja (FRA). It ended in draw which means he is trailing the leader by a half point 7/11. Four players - Anish Giri (NED), Vidit, R Praggnanandhaa and Wei Yi (CHN) are at 6.5/11 each. Solving News: Andrey Selivanov tops the International Solving Contest in Fujairah with a perfect score!

In what was a striking case of experience trumping youth, 56-year-old Andrey Selivanov of Russia topped the leaderboard of the 20th International Solving Contest (ISC) here in Fujairah, besting his young compatriots, including the reigning World Champion in solving, Danila Pavlov, and the 17-year-old wunderkind and star in the making, Ural Khasanov. Andrey, who holds Grandmaster titles both in solving and composing, scored a perfect 60 out of 60 to dominate the rest of the field, while Danila and Ural finished second and third, respectively. Nameet Chavan scored 8/9 to win Dr. Vijaykumar Gavit Chashak Rapid Rating Open 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Arnav Kherdekar and Kalpesh Dewang scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed second and third respectively according to tie-breaks. Nameet scored eight wins and suffered one loss. It was against the eventual runner-up Arnav in the penultimate round. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹100000. Sethuraman on the verge of winning 1st Bangalore GM 2024

GM Sethuraman S P drew against GM Nigel Short (ENG) to maintain his sole lead 7.5/9 at 1st Bangalore GM 2024. Top seed GM Abhijeet Gupta suffered his second consecutive loss of the event against IM Srihari L R. IM Aronyak Ghosh had his chances versus GM Mitrabha Guha. However, the game ended up in a draw. Five players - Short, Mitrabha, Diptayan, Srihari L R and GM Shyam Sundar M are trailing the leader by a half point at 7/9 each. Pushkar Dere drew against GM Sandipan Chanda to move to 6.5/9. Krishnan Sasikiran wins 47th Zurich Christmas Masters 2023, Iniyan second

Krishnan Sasikiran, Eltaj Safarli (AZE) and Iniyan Pa scored 5.5/7 at 47th Zurich Christmas Masters 2023. Sasikiran won the tournament on tie-breaks. Safarli and Iniyan shared second place as all of their tie-breaks were exactly the same. All three of them remained undefeated. Sasikiran drew against both runners-up. The total prize fund of the tournament was CHF 18500. The top three prizes were CHF 3000, 2000 and 1400. This was Sasikiran's sole tournament triumph in 2023. GM Sethuraman S P defeated the top seed GM Abhijeet Gupta to gain sole lead 7/8 at 1st Bangalore GM 2024. The reigning National champion, Sethuraman capitalized on his opponent's paltry mistake. The remaining two leaders - GM Mitrabha Guha drew his game against GM Nigel Short (ENG). GM Neelotpal Das missed a beautiful opportunity in the endgame against GM Shyam Sundar M. Untitled Nithin Babu continues his great form. He drew against IM Srihari L R. Pushkar Dere won against IM Nitish Belurkar to move to 6/8. Tata Steel 2024 R10: Gukesh and Abdusattorov are the coleaders

D Gukesh decimated Alexander Donchenko (GER) in Round 10 of 86th Tata Steel Masters 2024 to maintain his lead. The Germany no.3 consumed a lot of time in the opening when Gukesh went 12...Nb6. Later, Gukesh found a nice tactic to gain material and converted his advantage without any difficulty. Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) also scored a win over Max Warmerdam (NED). Both him and Gukesh are now the coleaders 6.5/10, followed by Anish Giri (NED) and R Praggnanandhaa at 6/10 each. Praggnanandhaa drew against Vidit Gujrathi. Ian Nepomniachtchi scored the only other win in the Mastes against the world champion, Ding Liren (CHN). Praggnanandhaa, Humpy and Vaishali set to battle Carlsen, Wenjun and co. at 12th Norway Chess 2024

The 12th edition of Norway Chess will introduce an equal Women's tournament. The inaugural edition of the Women's event will be played in the same playing hall concurrently, identical number of players, same format and an equivalent prize fund. The Open section will feature - Magnus Carlsen (NOR), Fabiano Caruana (USA), reigning Norway Chess winner - Hikaru Nakamura (USA), World Champion - Ding Liren (CHN), Alireza Firouzja (FRA) and R Praggnanandhaa. Koneru Humpy, Tingjie Lei (CHN), reigning four-time Women's World Champion - Wenjun Ju (CHN), Anna Muzychuk (UKR), R Vaishali and Pia Cramling (SWE) will be seen in action in the Women's event. Top seed GM Abhijeet Gupta made a quick draw against GM Mitrabha Guha in the seventh round of 1st Bangalore GM 2024. It allowed GM Sethuraman S P and GM Nigel Short to catch up with them. Iniyan loosened his grip on the position against Sethuraman which allowed his opponent to get back in the game. The English legend defeated IM Ilamparthi A R with ease. R Praggnanandhaa defeated the reigning four-time women's world champion, Wenjun Ju (CHN) in Round 9 of 86th Tata Steel Masters 2024. This means Praggnanandhaa has defeated both reigning world champions in open and women, just a week apart in the very same tournament. This win also ensured he joined the lead with Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB), Anish Giri (NED) and D Gukesh. Abdusattorov scored the quickest victory of the round against Jorden van Foreest (NED). Gukesh drew against Vidit Gujrathi. Leon Luke Mendonca won a grueling battle against Jaime Santos Latasa (ESP) after 111 moves. Selvamurugan B and 11-year-old Madhesh Kumar S scored 9/10 at 1st Bangalore GM Category B Below 2000 Rating Tournament 2024. Selvamurugan won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Madhesh was placed second. The champion remained unbeaten and defeated both runners-up. Teenagers, Jaidambareesh N R and Vihaan Dawda scored 8.5/10 each. They were placed third and fourth respectively. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹1250000. The top three prizes were ₹125000, ₹100000 and ₹80000 along with a trophy each respectively. This was Selvamurugan's second tournament of the year and he won it. Aradhya Garg becomes the latest International Master from New Delhi

23-year-old Aradhya Garg became India's latest International Master on 3rd January 2024. He defeated GM Tiger Hillarp Persson (SWE) in the seventh round of Rilton Cup 2023/24 to touch 2400 in the live ratings. The talented youth from New Delhi earned his first IM-norm at World Youth Under-18 back in November 2015. Then he secured his second IM-norm at 15th Delhi Open 2017. Five years later, he earned his final GM-norm in March 2022 at 1st Guwahati GM Open. However, the 2400 kept alluring him despite getting very close to it. The final hurdle was crossed at the beginning of this year. Before that, he managed to score three more IM-norms. He scored all his norms in Open tournaments. Adamas University won both Women and Men section of East Zone Inter University Championship 2022-23. Both Women and Men's team scored a perfect 12/12. Jadavpur University scored 10/12 to secure second place. Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University and Banaras Hindu University scored 8/12 each to be placed third and fourth according to tie-breaks. In Men's event, four teams - University of Calcutta, Jadavpur University, Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University and Patna University scored 9/12 each. They were placed second to fifth respectively. IM Ayush Sharma scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win UICC Rapid Rating Open 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Reigning Commonwealth Gold medalist, IM P Shyam Nikhil scored sole 8/9 to secure second place. He also remained undefeated. Five players - Mrittika Mallick, Pushkar Dere, IM D V Prasad, IM Anup Deshmukh and Anupam Nema scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed third to seventh according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹300000. The top three prizes were ₹30000, ₹25000 and ₹20000 along with a trophy each.
