FIDE World Championship Match 2024 Regulations announced

FIDE has announced the Regulations for World Championship 2024 Match. The match will consist of 14 classical games. Each game will follow the time control of 120 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment starting from move 41. The player who scores 7.5 points or more wins the World Championship Match. If the score after fourteen games is equal, then tie-breaks will be played. Tie-break rules are changed compared to the previous match in 2023. Total prize fund of the match is US$ 2.5 Million. Avinash Ramesh wins 30th Chambery International Festival 2024

IM Avinash Ramesh, FM Christophe Gelas (FRA) and IM Sebastien Joie (FRA) scored 7/9 each at 30th Chambery International Chess Festival Main (>1800) 2024. Avinash won the tournament on tie-breaks. Gelas and Joie were placed second and third respectively. The last round loss against Joie did not affect the outcome for Avinash. The total prize fund for the Maint tournament was €2200. The top three prizes were €1000, €700 and €500 each. The seven-day nine round Rating tournament was organized by Club Echecs Agglomération Chambérienne at Centre des Congres le Manege in Chambery, France from 29th July to 4th August 2024. This was Avinash's first tournament triumph of the year.

Vladyslav Larkin victorious at 8th RGCC Open 2024, Sanket Chakravarty second

IM Vladyslav Larkin (UKR) scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win 8th RGCC International Open 2024. IM Sanket Chakravarty and FM Daniel Centron Antuna (ESP) scored 7/9 each. Sanket secured second place on tie-breaks, Daniel third. The top two finishers remained undefeated. Sanket drew with both Larkin and Daniel. The top three prizes were €1000 + trophy, €700 and €500 each respectively. The seven-day nine-round rating tournament was organized by Real Groupo de Cultura Covadonga at Real Grupo de Cultura Covadonga, Avenida Jesús in Gijón, Asturias in Spain from 29th July to 4th August 2024.

Divya Deshmukh breaks into World #15, Four Indians in Top 15 among Women for the first time ever

Arjun Erigaisi maintained his World no.4 position in FIDE Rating list September 2024. R Praggnanandhaa returned to 2750. Currently, there are four Indians in top 12, five in top 24, six in top 33, seven in top 41 and eleven in top 96. Among the Women, for the first time, there are four Indians in top 15. IM Divya Deshmukh moved up to World no.15 among women after her fine performance at 30th Abu Dhabi Masters 2024. FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Championships 2024: Making history on Wall Street

FIDE World Rapid and Blitz championship 2024 will take place from 26th to 31st December in New York, USA. More details will be revealed in few weeks. One can expect the eligibility criteria, tournament regulations and total prize fund will be mentioned there. GM Magnus Carlsen (NOR), IM Anastasia Bodnaruk and GM Valentina Gunina are the defending champions. They would definitely like to defend their titles. Anwesh Upadhyaya wins a double at Summer Prague Open 2024

Dr. IM Anwesh Upadhyaya scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win Summer Prague Open A 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. IM Jakub Pulpan (CZE) and FM Zino Veleshnja (ALB) scored 7.5/9 each to secure second and third place according to tie-breaks. All top three finishers remained undefeated. The top three prizes in A Open were 20000 + trophy, 15000 and 10000 CZK each. Anwesh also won the C Rapid event. Six players scored 6/7. Out of them, Anwesh won the tournament due to his best tie-break scores. The top three prizes in Rapid were 2000, 1500 and 1000 CZK each. Surya Ganguly takes on Sam Shankland in a Chess Match using the Venceslav Rutar scoring method

Venceslav Rutar from Slovenia is organizing a match between GM Sam Shankland and GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly on the 2nd and 3rd of September. What's so special about this event? As Venceslav says "Draws are not the problem. The problem is how we score them!" A unique scoring system will be used in this match - The traditional 1 (to the winner), ½ (to both the players) and 0 (to the loser) points are replaced by five possibilities: Win, Favored Draw, Equal Draw, Disfavored Draw, and loss. The match will take place on 2nd and 3rd September 2024. Rainer Knaak triumphs at 11th Arber Schachfestival Open 2024, Himal Gusain third

GM Rainer Knaak (GER) scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win 11th Arber Schachfestival Open 2024. ChessBase's very own, opening trap expert won the tournament with a 2612 performance and finished a half point ahead of the field GM Misa Pap (SRB) scored 7.5/9 to finish second. IM Himal Gusain scored 7/9 to finish third. He also drew with the eventual champion, Rainer in Round 5. The total prize fund of the tournament was €6700. Soham Kamotra becomes the first International Master of Jammu and Kashmir

FM Soham Kamotra became the first International Master of Jammu and Kashmir. The monumental feat was achieved when he drew with the Africa no.1 GM Bassem Amin (EGY) in the sixth round of 30th Abu Dhabi Masters on 21st August. The draw helped him cross 2400 in the live ratings. The first IM-norm was scored at 22nd Abu Dhabi Masters 2022 in UAE. A little over nine months later, he secured his second IM-norm at Hanoi GM Round Robin 2023 in Vietnam. The reigning Purba Bardhaman district champion, WFM Bristy Mukherjee scored an unbeaten 7.5/8 to win Lake Youth Club presents West Bengal State Women's Rating 2024. She finished a half point ahead of the field. Rajanya Datta (North 24 Parganas) scored 7/8 to secure second place. She also remained undefeated. Dakhsha Rudra (North 24 Parganas) finished third scoring 6.5/8. Her sole loss was against the eventual runner-up, Rajanya. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹90000. The top three prizes were ₹20000 + trophy, ₹15000 and ₹10000 each respectively. The four-day eight-round rating tournament was organized by Kolkata District Chess Association from 1st to 4th August at Sahid Smriti Sangha in Kolkata, West Bengal. Dinesh Rajan M clinches 30th Abu Dhabi Chess Festival Open A Below 2300 Rating 2024, Mandar Lad second

Dinesh Rajan M scored sole 8/9 to win 30th Abu Dhabi Chess Festival Open A (<2300) Rating Tournament 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. Mandar Pradip Lad and Iliya Darini (IRI) scored 7.5/9 each. Mandar finished second on tie-breaks, Iliya third. Pushkar Dere is the only other Indian to make a top ten finish. He scored 7/9 to secure fifth place. Dinesh suffered his sole loss in the second round against Aniket Bapat. He won the next seven games in-a-row to become a clear champion. Total prize fund was US$ 10050. The top three prizes were US$ 3000 + trophy, $2000 and $1500 each respectively. Last year, Dinesh won the B group (<2000) scoring the exact same points. Sriiyukthaa Abirami and Aarav Dengla clinch Gold, Silver and Bronze at World Schools Rapid and Blitz 2024

Sriiyukthaa Marksim Karki Abirami scored 7.5/9 to win Gold at FIDE World Schools Rapid Under-9 Girls 2024. She finished a half point ahead of the field. After suffering her sole loss against the eventual Bronze winner, Mumtozbegim Sobirova (UZB) in Round 6, Sriiyukthaa bounced back by winning the next three games. Sriiyukthaa also won a Bronze medal in the Blitz event scoring 7/9. She finished a full point behind the Gold medal winner, Husnorakhon Khusnitdinova (UZB). Saptorshi Gupta dominates Summit Rookies August Rapid Rating Open 2024 with a perfect score

Saptorshi Gupta scored a perfect 6/6 to win Summit Rookies August Rapid Rating Open 2024. The PhD researcher finished a staggering 1.5 points ahead of the competition. Four players - Ziyi Huang (CHN), Yao Zen Markis Tew (NZL), Junqing Jerome Tao (NZL) and Xxavier Willoughby-Ansell (NZL) scored 4.5/6 each. They were placed second to fifth respectively. Saptorshi defeated both podium finishers. The top three prizes were NZ$120, $80 and $40 along with a medal each. The one-day six-round tournament was organized by Summit Chess Club at Alexandra Park, Epsom in Auckland, New Zealand on 4th August 2024. This was Saptorshi's third tournament he played and first triumph in New Zealand.

The World Junior and World Women Championships for the Blind 2024 are in need of funds

AICFB is set to organize another major event for the blind and visually impaired chess players. The 12th IBCA World Junior and Woman Chess Championship will be held from 27th September – 07 October 2024. This prestigious event will be held in the Chancery Pavilion Hotel in Bangalore where the audience will witness past world champions, international masters, and FIDE-rated players in action. However, these events are currently lacking sponsors and the AICFB is seeking support from individuals, organizations, and the entire chess community to organize this historic event.
