Bijnor Open International FIDE Rating tournament kicks off from 30th November

Nodirbek Yakubboev wins Qatar Masters 2023, S L Narayanan third with a 2792 performance

The 44th Chess Olympiad Gold medalists - Nodirbek Abdussatorov (UZB) and Nodirbek Yakubboev (UZB) won their final round games against Arjun Erigaisi and Karthikeyan Murali respectively. Thus, they both became the only two players to end up with a score of 7/9 each. Yakubboev beat his countryman Abdusattorov in both 5'+3" Blitz play-off games to become Qatar Masters 2023 champion. Abdusattorov was placed second. S L Narayanan had a good chance against Hikaru Nakamura (USA). However, he was unable to seize it and it ended in a draw. Nevertheless, Narayanan scored an unbeaten 6.5/9 with a performance of 2792. He finished third along with five more players including Arjun Erigaisi and D Gukesh. Abhimanyu Puranik was on the verge of handing Magnus Carlsen his third defeat of the tournament. IM Vaishali R and IM Srihari L R scored GM-norms. CM Mayank Chakraborty earned his final IM-norm. Akshayakalpa makes entry into Hyderabad Chess scene

Akshayakalpa Organic, a well-known name in the Bangalore chess fraternity, has extended its support and presence to the Hyderabad chess scene. This is a significant step in the expansion and collaboration within the chess community. Hyderabad Chess Centre is organizing the Akshayakalpa Organic 3rd HCC Open Telangana State Chess Tournament. It will take place at Olivemount Global School in Hyderabad, Telangana on the 22nd October. This tournament is expected to be a notable event in the Hyderabad chess calendar. Will Arjun Erigaisi win Qatar Masters 2023?

GM Arjun Erigaisi defeated GM David Paravyan to gain sole lead 6.5/8 going into the final round of Qatar Masters 2023. He will face the 44th Olympiad Gold medalist and World Rapid 2021 champion - GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) in Round 9. A win will make an outright champion, whereas a draw would result in Playoffs among the players who will finish at 7/9. Six players are at 6/8 each. GM Karthikeyan Murali and GM S L Narayanan who drew their game against each other, are the only two Indians among them. GM Abhimanyu Puranik made a clever draw against World no.7 - GM Anish Giri. Jaffna District Chess Association invites you to Jaffna International Chess Championship 2023. The inaugural edition is offering a first prize of LKR 200000 and a total prize fund of LKR 2.4 Million. A total of 150 prizes are up for grabs. Entry is FREE for GM, IM, WGM, WIM, FM, WFMs and players rated above 2000. Travel grant is offered to GM, IM, WGM, WIMs. Foreign players are given various conditions too. Qatar Masters 2023 R7: Magnus Carlsen crumbles against Karthikeyan Murali

Karthikeyan Murali made the most out of his opportunity against the World no.1. The FIDE World Cup 2023 winner made an unforced error when he decided to give up two of his minor pieces for a rook. The Norwegian never got any compensation for it. Karthikeyan managed to convert his advantage into a full point. This win almost ensures that Carlsen is highly unlikely to defend his Qatar Masters title. After Vishy Anand and Pentala Harikrishna, Karthikeyan became the third Indian to beat Magnus Carlsen in a Classical rated game. With this win, Karthikeyan joins S L Narayanan, Javokhir Sindarov (UZB), Arjun Erigaisi, David Paravyan and Nodirbek Yakubboev (UZB) in a six-pack lead. Raunak Sadhwani wins FIDE World Junior Rapid 2023 Open, Second in Blitz

GM Raunak Sadhwani scored 8.5/11 to win FIDE World Junior Rapid 2023 Open. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Despite suffering two losses in the first five rounds, the teenager won the next four games, drew the penultimate round against the eventual Silver medalist GM Arseniy Nesterov. He finished with a victory over IM Tobias Koelle (GER) to become a clear champion. GM Nesterov and IM Dimitris Alexakis (GRE) were placed second and third respectively according to tie-breaks. GM Mahammad Muradli (AZE) won the Blitz Open event scoring 9.5/11. GM Raunak Sadhwani scored sole 8.5/11 to be placed second. IM Arystan Isanzhulov (KAZ) was placed third. India's 83rd GM Aditya Samant put up a very good fight against the World no.1 GM Magnus Carlsen (NOR). However, an incorrect decision in the endgame cost the teenager the sixth round game at Qatar Masters 2023. The sole leader GM S L Narayanan drew his game against the World Rapid 2021 champion GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB). GM Arjun Erigaisi got the better of IM Rudik Makarian. Arjun joined Narayanan, GM Javokhir Sindarov and GM Nodirbek Yakubboev (UZB) in a four-way lead 5/6. Osaka Club A wins 216 player strong Japan Team Chess Championship 2023

Japan Chess Federation conducts the Japan Team Chess Championship on an annual basis. The 2023 event was held in the middle of September, on the 17th and 18th, taking advantage of a 3-day long national holiday. This tournament saw a record high participation: 48 teams, each comprising either four or five members, which translated into 216 players. Mayur Gondhalekar brings a detailed report of the biggest tournament in Japan, in terms of the huge number of participants. This event also marked Mayur’s debut as an arbiter. Harikrishnan A Ra dominates 1st Smart Chess Academy Rapid Rating Open 2023

IM FT Harikrishnan A Ra scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 1st Smart Chess Academy Rapid Rating Open 2023. Harikrishnan finished a half point ahead of the competition. Five players - IM Nitin S, FM Harshad S, Manigandan S S, Aakash G and Prasannaa S scored 8/9 each. They were placed second to sixth according to tie-breaks. The eventual winner, Harikrishnan drew against the \runner-up, Nitin, in the penultimate round. Both of them remained undefeated. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹20000, ₹17000 and ₹15000 along with a trophy each respectively. This is Harikrishnan's ninth rating and eleventh overall tournament triumph of the year. St. Xavier, The Sanskaar Valley and Carmel Convent win Khelo Chess India Inter-school trophy

ChessBase India's Khelo Chess India Mission is gaining momentum towards the aim of creating 1000 chess players in Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh. The 20th edition of Khelo Chess India, the first ever Inter-School Trophy was organized on 15th October 2023. A record number of 235 players participated in the competition, of which 198 played in the boys' category and 37 in the girls' category. St. Xavier's School, The Sanskaar Valley School and Carmel Convent School won the team championships in different categories. Qatar Masters 2023 R5: S L Narayanan displaces India no.1 Gukesh, gains sole lead

GM S L Narayanan defeated the India no.1 and World no.8 GM D Gukesh to emerge sole leader at Qatar Masters 2023. The India no.8 got a great position early in the middlegame and kept posing difficult questions to his opponent. It liquidated into a queen endgame which only computer can play precisely and save the day. Gukesh is human and he erred which allowed Narayanan to win the game and move to 4.5/5. A dozen players are trailing him at 4/5 each. The World no.1 GM Magnus Carlsen (NOR) bounced back by scoring a victory over GM Bharath Subramaniyam H. IM Vaishali R continues her impressive unbeaten run. She defeated 44th Olympiad Gold medalist, GM Shamsiddin Vokhidov (UZB) to move to 4/5. Today is a rest day.
