R Vaishali scored in a must-win Armageddon with the white pieces against Tingjie Lei (CHN) in Round 5 of Norway Chess Women 2024. Vaishali made her intentions clear that she will leave no stone unturned to push for a win when she temporarily sacrificed an exchange. She was guaranteed to get it back and the position remained equal. However, the intent to score a win made a significant difference. Eventually, her opponent faltered and Vaishali walked away with 1.5 points. She maintains her sole lead 10/15. Anna Muzychuk (UKR) defeated Pia Cramling (SWE) to reduce the gap with the leader 9/15. 12th Norway Chess R5: Praggnanandhaa outplays Fabiano Caruana in the endgame, now World no.10

R Praggnanandhaa outplayed Fabiano Caruana (USA) to become World no.10 in the live ratings. In the fifth round of 12th Norway Chess, the teenager channeled Magnus Carlsen (NOR) by grinding an equal knight endgame. When the World no.2 crumbled, Praggnanandhaa had no trouble converting his advantage into a win. He now has a Classical win over both World no.1 and 2 and he achieved within a span of three days. Magnus also grinded an equal endgame against Alireza Firouzja (FRA) who made an elementary mistake in the rook endgame. 24th Dubai Open R7: Sina and Ivic join Muradli in a three-way lead

GM Mahammad Muradli (AZE) survived a massive scare against IM Aronyak Ghosh in Round 7 of 24th Dubai Open 2024. First, Aronyak sacrificed his bishop to expose his opponent's kingside. He could not follow through correctly. However, he later he got one more opportunity. He panicked and moved his king into safety, soon the queens got traded and the attacking chaces evaporated. GM Raunak Sadhwani had a relatively calm draw against GM Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus (TUR). IM Srihari L R stunned GM Luca Moroni Jr. (ITA) after the latter's Greek gift sacrifice did not work out. WIM Srishti Pandey won her second game in-a-row to maintain her pursuit 6/7 in Category B. She is now just a half point behind the sole leader, Yousef A Alhassadi (LBA). Anustoop Biswas wins 3rd Kashmir Rating Open 2024

Anustoop Biswas, IM Neeraj Kumar Mishra and FM Md. Sharif Hossain (BAN) scored 7.5/9 each at 3rd Kashmir Rating Open 2024. Anustoop won the tournament due to better tie-break score. Neeraj and Sharif secured second and third place respectively. Anustoop's sole loss of the event was against the eventual runner-up and one of the top trainers of the country, Neeraj in the final round. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹231000. The top three prizes were ₹50000, ₹25000 and ₹15000 along with a trophy each respectively. The six-day nine-round tournament was organized by The Kashmir Chess Club, Srinagar at Indoor Sports Complex, Polo Ground in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir from 4th to 9th May 2024. Vietnam’s 15-year-old National Champion - Banh Gia Huy

15-year-old Banh Gia Huy is only a FIDE Master with a rating of 2384 but already has two IM-norms and is the sensational winner of the Vietnam Championship. Huy will therefore be a member of the Vietnam team at the 45th Budapest Olympiad in September this year, joining the likes of GMs Le Quang Liem, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, and Tran Tuan Minh. Despite learning chess at four years of age from a chess set given to him by his father, Huy was a late starter to chess, his first tournament being in school during Grade 1 when six years of age. Pranav Ganesh Prabhu and Nivedita V C are 36th Tamil Nadu State Under-13 Champions 2024

Pranav Ganesh Prabhu scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win 36th Tamil Nadu State Under-13 Open Rating 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. Four players - Tanish Ragavan S, Aarav A, Adharsh K and Pranav Sai Ram R S scored 7.5/9 each. They secured second to fifth place according to tie-breaks. In the Girls event, Nivedita V C scored a perfect 9/9 to become the champion. She finished a full point ahead of the competition. Shanmathi Sree S scored sole 8/9 to secure second place. Kaarthika Gadde and R Chardudharshini scored 7.5/9 each to be placed third and fourth respectively. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹50000, ₹25000 in Open and ₹25000 in Women. The top three prizes were ₹5000, ₹4000 and ₹3500 along with a trophy each respectively. Dabaru is a movie based on the life of top Indian Grandmaster, Trainer and author - GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly. This is an one-of-it's-kind film, this being the first movie based on the life of an Indian Chess Grandmaster! The movie had a theater release on 10th May in West Bengal, and a few days later in other states. Aditya Sur Roy from ChessBase India lives in Hyderabad, and decided to watch it with his family! GM Mahammad Muradli (AZE) drew with GM Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus (TUR) to maintain his sole lead 5/6 at 24th Dubai Open 2024. GM Raunak Sadhwani defeated GM Sethuraman S P to stay in the hunt. This is Raunak's first-ever Classical win over his opponent. The teenager exploited his opponent's tiny positional inaccuracy in the middlegame. GM Pa Iniyan made a great escape against IM Aronyak Ghosh. Aronyak had two good chances to push for a win. Unfortunately for him, he missed both and the game ended in a draw. R Vaishali continues her great form at Norway Chess Women 2024. She scored her second Classical win of the event. In Round 4, she defeated the legend, Pia Cramling (SWE) after the latter blundered in an equal rook endgame. Anna Muzychuk (UKR) ended her win drought in Classical chess. She seized her opportunity when Koneru Humpy blundered in a balanced rook endgame. The rematch from Women's World Championship 2023 Match between Tingjie Lei (CHN) and Wenjun Ju (CHN) ended in a draw in the Classical. However, Wenjun won the Armageddon after her opponent could not manage to score a must-win game with the white pieces. Today is a rest day. 12th Norway Chess R4: Nakamura schools Praggnanandhaa, emerges new sole leader

Hikaru Nakamura defeated R Praggnanandhaa to leap to the top of the 12th Norway Chess 2024 leaderboard. Praggnanandhaa's ambitious knight sacrifice to increase the vulnerability of his opponent's king did not work out. Nakamura had no trouble converting his advantage into a win. The teenager kept fighting but to no avail. Magnus Carlsen avenged his last year's loss on the exact day against Fabiano Caruana. The latter blundered into a mate in five in a queen endgame which ideally should have ended in a draw. GM Mahammad Muradli (AZE) defeated second seeded GM Raunak Sadhwani to emerge sole leader 4.5/5 at 24th Dubai Open 2024. Raunak had a difficult defense to save the game. However, he missed his sole window of opportunity and the Azeri won the full point. GM Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus (TUR) had a well contested draw with GM Sethuraman S P. IM Aronyak Ghosh needed to take a bold decision and find a complex line to push for a win against GM Velimir Ivic (SRB). Ivic managed to sacrifice an exchange at the right time to escape with a draw. Speaking of exchange sacrifices, GM Eltaj Safarli (AZE) made an incorrect one allowing GM Pa Iniyan to score a full point. However, Vaishali ensured that she does not make any mistake. She maintained her sole lead 5.5/9. The reigning Women's World Champion - Wenjun Ju (CHN) won her Armageddon against the legend - Pia Cramling (SWE). Wenjun drew her Armageddon with the black pieces to win the match. She is 4.5/9. 12th Norway Chess R3: Praggnanandhaa crushes Carlsen, scoring his first-ever Classical win against the World no.1

R Praggnanandhaa defeated Magnus Carlsen for the first time at Airthings Masters 2022. Earlier this month, Praggnanandhaa scored his first-ever over-the-board rated game win over the World no.1 at Grand Chess Tour Superbet Blitz 2024 in Warsaw, Poland. A few hours ago, on Wednesday 29th May, in the third round of 12th Norway Chess 2024, the teenager managed to beat the Norwegian for the first time in a Classical rated game. He got a better position out of the opening and converted his advantage into a win. Although he felt that he allowed his opponent to equalize, the FIDE World Cup 2023 winner, did not get a chance to recuperate. They will face each other again in Round 8. The top board clash between IM Aronyak Ghosh and GM Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus (TUR) ended in a draw. GM Raunak Sadhwani and GM Sethuraman S P scored wins over IM Oliver Dimakiling (PHI) and GM Evgenios Ioannidis (GRE) respectively to join the lead. Aronyak, Raunak, Sethurama, Yagiz and GM Mahammad Muradli (AZE) are the five players at 3.5/4 at 24th Dubai Open 2024. Sethuraman's win was not so smooth. His Greek opponent had a tough to spot defence in the sharp double rook and bishop vs queen and bishop endgame. R Vaishali scored her first Classical win over Koneru Humpy in Norway Chess Women 2024 Round 2. Humpy had a slight edge in the middlegame. However, a couple of incorrect pawn pushes allowed her opponent to get back in the game. A rook swing resulted in Humpy's queen getting trapped at the center of the board. Thus, Vaishali scored the first three points of the event, combining both Open and Women. Tingjie Lei (CHN) and Wenjun Ju (CHN) won Armageddon games against Pia Cramling (SWE) and Anna Muzychuk (UKR). Both Wenjun and Tingjie are trailing Vaishali by a full point at 3/6 each.
