P Shyam Nikhil wins 18th Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed Circuit 2024, Aakash G third

IM P Shyam Nikhil, IM Anton Sitnikov (UKR) and Aakash G scored 6/9 each at 16th Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed Circuit Chess Tournament 2024. Shyam won the tournament as he had beaten Anton in the very first round and drew against Aakash in the fifth. Anton and Aakash were placed second and third according to tie-breaks. Only Shyam remained undefeated. The six-day ten-player round-robin tournament was organized by Tamil Nadu Chess Association at Dr. Mahalingam College of Engineering and Technology in Pollachi, Tamil Nadu from 13th to 18th February 2024. 5th Shenzhen Masters 2024 R2: Giri still cannot overcome Dubov

The second round of 5th Shenzhen Masters 2024 witnessed four decisive results. The previous round winners - Anish Giri (NED) and Arjun Erigaisi lost their games. Giri lost against the former World Rapid champion - Daniil Dubov. The world no.5 has always struggled against Dubov. In a queen, rook and bishop endgame, Giri missed a forced sequence which his opponent spotted and won the game. Arjun made an incorrect decision against Xiangzhi Bu (CHN) at a critical moment which turned things in his opponent's favor. Prague Masters 2024 R4: Five draws

All five games ended in draws at the fourth round of Prague International Chess Festival 2024 Masters. They were all well-contested draws. The most important result was for Praggnanandhaa as he lost the last two rounds. So any result apart from a loss, was a good result for him against the Czech Republic no.2 - Thai Dai Van Nguyen. Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) and Parham Maghsoodloo (IRI) are still the coleaders 3/4, followed by D Gukesh and Richard Rapport (ROU) at 2.5/4 each. Srihari L dominates 17th Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed Circuit 2024, Sai Vishwesh third

Srihari L scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win 17th Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed Circuit Chess Tournament 2024. He also earned his third IM-norm in the process and became India's latest International Master. The teenager performed at 2584, gained 40.2 Elo rating points and finished a staggering 2.5 points ahead of others. Winner of the last two editions - IM Anton Sitnikov (UKR) and Sai Vishwesh C scored 5.5/9 each. They secured second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. 5th Shenzhen Masters 2024 R1: Arjun Erigaisi starts with a win, now India no.1 and World no.11

Arjun Erigaisi started his 5th Shenzhen Masters 2024 campaign with an emphatic victory. He correctly capitalized on his chance when his opponent, Xiangyu Xu (CHN) went to capture an incorrect pawn in the queen and minor piece endgame. Arjun is now India no.1 and World no.11 in the live ratings. Anish Giri (NED) scored a fantastic win over Vladislav Artemiev. When the opportunity arose to sacrifice his bishop to expose his opponent's kingside, Anish did it. This win moved him up a place in the live ratings to World no.4. Prague Masters 2024 R3: Abdusattorov wins a thriller, now World no.8, Praggnanandhaa blunders

Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) won a thrilling game against David Navara (CZE) in Round 3 of Prague International Chess Festival 2024 Masters. The game could have gone either player's way. If the Czech Republic no.1 spotted the correct continuation where he blundered, he would have won the game. This win allowed Abdusattorov to join the lead with Parham Maghsoodloo (IRI) 2.5/3 and also become World no.8 in the live ratings. R Praggnanandhaa suffered his second consecutive loss of the event. This time he was completely winning against Richard Rapport (ROU). He played a series of inaccurate moves which eventually allowed his opponent to walk away with a full point. The fifth edition of Shenzhen Masters 2024 starts today. Arjun Erigaisi will be the sole Indian taking part in this event. Anish Giri (NED) who won the third edition in 2019, will be the highest rated player in the field. The winner of the fourth edition in 2021, Yangyi Yu is the highest rated Chinese player in the mix. Former World Rapid champion, Daniil Dubov will also be seen in action. The remaining four players are - Vladislav Artemiev, Xiangzhi Bu (CHN), Qun Ma (CHN) and Xiangyu Xu (CHN). He emerged an early sole leader 2/2. Vidit Gujrathi drew against Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) comfortably. Gukesh vs Vidit and Praggnanandhaa vs Richard Rapport (ROU) will take place in Round 3. Mitrabha Guha convincingly wins Gold at Commonwealth 2023-24, Rohith Silver and Deepan Bronze

GM Mitrabha Guha defeated the sole leader IM S Rohith Krishna in the final round to win Commonwealth Chess Championship 2023-24. Unlike last edition, Mitrabha ensured that he plays for Gold by going for nothing but the win. That is what he achieved by scoring a hat-trick of wins to finish the event at the top. Rohith secured Silver. GM Deepan Chakkravarthy and GM Vignesh N R also scored 7/9 each like Rohith. Deepan won Bronze due to better tie-breaks. Vignesh claimed Gold in the Blitz Open event scoring 9/11. This time he ensured no tie-breaks were needed by finishing a half point ahead of the rest. GM Jingyao Tin (SGP) and GM Swapnil S Dhopade scored 8.5/11 each. They won Silver and Bronze medal respectively. Prague Masters 2024 R1: Praggnanandhaa makes a scintillating start

R Praggnanandhaa scored a fantastic victory over Vincent Keymer in the first round of Prague International Chess Festival 2024 Masters. The world no.13 made a thematic knight sacrifice in the Italian opening against the Germany no.1. The exposed kingside is not practically easy to defend. Keymer eventually faltered and his opponent seized his advantage. D Gukesh had a small opportunity to avoid the trade of queens against Richard Rapport (ROU). It would have allowed him to maintain pressure on his opponent's kingside. Rapport managed to alleviate the attacking chances by exchanging queens. Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) and Parham Maghsoodloo (IRI) are the only two other victors in the Masters section. It will be Parham vs Praggnanandhaa, Thai Dai Van Nguyen (CZE) vs Gukesh and Vidit vs Abdusattorov in Round 2. Ashwath Kaushik from Singapore made history by becoming the youngest player to defeat a Grandmaster in Classical Chess at the tender age of 8 years, 6 months and 11 days. Praggnanandhaa, Vidit and Gukesh set to battle world's best at Prague International Chess Festival 2024 Masters

The sixth edition of Prague International Chess Festival 2024 starts today. Four Indian Candidates will be seen in action - R Praggnanandhaa, Vidit Gujrathi, D Gukesh and R Vaishali. The first three will play in the Masters section, while Vaishali will battle in the Challengers. That's not all. The reigning 36th National Under-11 Open 2023 champion, Aansh Nandan Nerurkar will play in the Futures group. This year, the Indian participation in the round-robin events is the highest ever at this event. The legend - Vishy Anand opened the festival. Isha Sharma wins 2nd Felix Sasomi Under 2200 Rating Tournament 2024

WIM Isha Sharma scored 8/9 to win 2nd Felix Sasomi Under 2200 Rating Tournament 2024. She finished a half point ahead of the competition. After a 4/4 start, Isha lost her fifth round game against 11-year-old Andrei Negrean (ROU). However, Isha bounced back by winning the next four games to become a clear champion. FM Csaba Zoltan Varga (ROU) secured second place 7.5/9, Andrei third, according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was €14000. The top three prizes were €2400 + cup, €1600 and €1200 each respectively. It is not everyday we get to witness a woman winning an open/rating restricted tournament. Six new champions crowned at 11th National Amateur Chess Championships 2024

The eleventh edition of National Amateur Chess Championships 2024 witnessed a total participation of 620 players from 27 different states, union territories and units across the nation. Six new champions were crowned in six different rating categories. They are: Shreyas (DEL) - Below 1700 Open, Ruhani Raj Asudani (GUJ) - Below 1700 Women, Devansh Shah (MAH) - Below 2000 Open, Saniya Rafique Tadavi (MAH) - Below 2000 Women, Harish Sharma (DEL) - Below 2300 Open and Shanmathi Sree S (TN) in Below 2300 Women.
